    1. The opinions and conduct of men are often regulated by the women in the most arduous enterprises of life; and their approbation is frequently the principal reward of the hero’s dangers, and the patriot’s toils. Besides, the first impressions upon the minds of children are generally derived from the women. Of how much consequence, therefore, is it in a republic, that they should think justly upon the great subjects of liberty and government!

Observation: First mention of women in the entire primary source. Women were wanted to have an education in order for their children to have a proper first introduction to liberty and government. Interpretation: Push for education was a big part of the enlightment ideologies, with that the men were the priority amongst most people who were in great influence of the enlightment. This helped me better understand the ideologies of the enlightment thinkers about gender and roles. Enlightment had taught people that Women's had their own duties such as being a housewife and tending t the children, therefore that is why they women are only brought up in this primary source to be educated in that sense; for the sake of the women's future children. Change over time: although everything changed, not everything changes at the same time. The push for school was strong, but the idea stayed around that the men needed better education than the women as they were the ones in the government positions of power. We see how this is a unique time in history because yes the schooling was changing but had very different ideas based on gender and what kind of education they each should have.

    2. The influence of these physical causes will be powerful upon the intellects, as well as upon the principles and morals of young people.

Observation: Allowing children to learn in a structured environment will overall benefit them as they learn, and deep into their futures. Interpretation: Showing young children proper etiquette at an early age allows for easier transition when they become adults. The goal of changing the mode of education is for the children's future. The principles they are learning will benefit them in many areas such as government, religion, history, etc. All things needed to be able to form an opinion of hat an adult believes in. During this push for education one of the main goals was to have a more peaceful government, with that I believe they wanted to be more upfront about their values and ideas when children are younger so they have a baseline understanding of how the world works. This makes it much easier for these young children to be acclimated into adulthood as they would be properly set up after this education system was set to be in place. Change over time: although everything changed, not everything changes at the same time. Here we see schooling is being pushed to change for the better making this specific moment in time unique and part of the human story. The schooling system had to change in order to better help our community become stronger and better prepared for the future. Because of this change we now can better understand our changing civilization during the 1700's.

    3. Our schools of learning, by producing one general, and uniform system of education, will render the mass of the people more homogeneous, and thereby fit them more easily for uniform and peaceable government.

Observation: One common structure of education would benefit all students to set help better them for their own futures. Interpretation: The idea that all students would get a similar understanding and insight into one main goal helps better the group as a community. This idea will help children form a strong understanding of things such as religion, liberty, morals, manners and how to understand all the different parts of the government. Before this large push for a more structured education among all children the education was very informal ad varied among the wealthy, the poor, etc. The educational opportunities relied on each communities resources and if you were more on the poor side then you most likely didn't have any access to education at all. This is why so many pushed for a more general and structured education, so each child would have an equal opportunity to flourish.

Causality: Certain things happen because something else made it happen; The school system was disorganized chaos among communities with some children getting lucky with money and are able to afford tutors and teachers while those who are not blessed with wealth were stuck to learn on their own and often lead to little to no education at all. In this case Benjamin Rush wanted this idea to be plastered all along in order to help fix this problem. Helping to giving proper shots at these children succeeding in life.

    4. The policy of the Lacedemonians is well worthy of our imitation. When Antipater demanded fifty of their children as hostages for the fulfillment of a distant engagement, those wise republicans refused to comply with his demand, but readily offered him double the number of their adult citizens, whose habits and prejudices could not be shaken by residing in a foreign country.

Observation: Antipater wanted children hostages to be sent to a different country with no knowledge about that place, instead the republicans made a smarter choice to refuse and instead sending twice the amount of adults over. Interpretation: Antipater wanted the minds of those young children so he can easily influence their ideas and education at an early age to gain their respect and trick them into thinking that’s were they belonged all along. The adults were the much smarter choice her as they already had a deep understandings of their habits and they would not fall into residing with this foreign county like Antipater was hoping for. This shows that the writer agreed with the republicans who failed to comply with the demand. This helped me form a much better understanding of why it would be so important to produce a uniformed system of education in order to teach the children about government in order to help set them up for success(from primary source). Context: Using context here during 1786 in Pennsylvania, I would only assume that along with the idea of using education to set these kids up for success within that, another reason for the push for education was the influence of the enlightenment going on. This pushed for the importance of knowledge, reason and most importantly education. Therefore those who were informing themselves about the ideas of enlighten often agreed and sided with that. Helping the push for education within all those who were influenced.

    1. How came you sick for there is an odd discourse of that in the mouths of many —

Observation : The Salem witch trials judges highlight the fact that the accused is looking ill. He highlights the fact that he may be sick and in front of all these people, it would be a big mistake, is another observation I can make from the tone of this writing. The social hierarchy of 1692 included many people in power having greater value in the community than others. Leaving those who are accused in a state of great remorse as they have very little say in how these trials turn out. This is important because it shows us exactly how these questions point to a verdict that is not true. This highlights how in 1692 people felt so shamed and frightened with accusation that are false they would have body like symptoms of feeling sick due to fear.

    2. You would do well if you are guilty to confess & give Glory to God

Observation: Within these hearings there were a lot of questions and statements that point in the direction that the prosecution already had their minds made up. The power held within the church was strong, and if anyone were to be accused of witchcraft, they would be questioned heavily about all aspects. Most times there was no obvious proof, or even proof at all in cases. The result in which you are set back free after being accused would only be due to the confession and apology. This shows that the church wanted fear into others to obey and not to steer off track with their ideologies and rules unless you want to pay the consequences.

    3. Possibly you may apprehend you are no witch, but have you not been led aside by temptations that way

Observation: Even if the accused refuse any idea that they are or have dabbled in any witchy content- they still are pressed about the ideas through the temptations of witchcraft. We can learn from this that the trials were not fair, even your thoughts becoming ammunition for the judge to use. The political structure during the Salem witch trials were very heavily swayed by local leaders. They allowed evidence such as testimony based on only dreams and visions. Mix that with the fear of the devil, and we see why so many executions happened.

    4. What a sad thing it is that a church member here & now an other of Salem, should be thus accused and charged

I observe everyone agrees this is an unfortunate scene that had to happen. You can feel what it's their hearts is disappointment and potentially fear. These trials happened all over Protestant Europe, not just in Salem. Learning about the past based on this I understand that everyone had a hard time even suggesting this idea. This statement was made from emotion showing that regardless of the situation. Accusing people of witchcraft and then prosecuting them if found guilty would put a red pin within the township, leaving all people effected even after the trial is over.
