The opinions and conduct of men are often regulated by the women in the most arduous enterprises of life; and their approbation is frequently the principal reward of the hero’s dangers, and the patriot’s toils. Besides, the first impressions upon the minds of children are generally derived from the women. Of how much consequence, therefore, is it in a republic, that they should think justly upon the great subjects of liberty and government!
Observation: First mention of women in the entire primary source. Women were wanted to have an education in order for their children to have a proper first introduction to liberty and government. Interpretation: Push for education was a big part of the enlightment ideologies, with that the men were the priority amongst most people who were in great influence of the enlightment. This helped me better understand the ideologies of the enlightment thinkers about gender and roles. Enlightment had taught people that Women's had their own duties such as being a housewife and tending t the children, therefore that is why they women are only brought up in this primary source to be educated in that sense; for the sake of the women's future children. Change over time: although everything changed, not everything changes at the same time. The push for school was strong, but the idea stayed around that the men needed better education than the women as they were the ones in the government positions of power. We see how this is a unique time in history because yes the schooling was changing but had very different ideas based on gender and what kind of education they each should have.
