    1. This period we are entering could become the sixth mass extinction event in Earth’s history, and the first caused by human activity.

this is the most realistic dystopia that we'll ever experience. the world is literally going to end as a result of the things we as humans have done to it.

    2. To the extent this is typical, dystopias can be thought of as a kind of surrealism.

dystopias aren't meant to realistically portray the future, but instead give an idea of the exaggerated emotions which are drawn from the past and present.

    3. Together the two views combine and pop into a vision of History, extending magically into the future.

it seems as though he's saying that the events of the past are directly related to the fears of the future.

    1. But why try to demonstrate to learned men something that isknown even to dogs who bark at visitors—sometimes indeedonly at strangers but in the night at everyone?

this is very interesting. dogs are distrusting as a result of their own natural instincts, so maybe it is normal for humans to be distrusting due to our natural instincts.

    2. . Well, then, think about how you behave: when going on a journey, youarm yourself, and try not to go alone; when going to sleep, you lock your doors; even inside your own house you lockyour chests; and you do all this when you know that thereare laws, and armed public officers of the law, to revengeany harms that are done to you. Ask yourself: what opiniondo you have of your fellow subjects when you ride armed?Of your fellow citizens when you lock your doors? Of yourchildren and servants when you lock your chests?

he definitely made several points here. i guess because of the way the world is, we've become so conditioned to being protective of ourselves that we don't even realize that we have to do this; almost like a "second nature".

    3. Every man wants his associates to value himas highly as he values himself; and any sign that he isdisregarded or undervalued naturally leads a man to try, asfar as he dares, to raise his value in the eyes of others

men seek validation and feel undervalued when they don't receive it; sounds about right.

    4. Because of this distrust amongst men, themost reasonable way for any man to make himself safe is tostrike first, that is, by force or cunning subdue other men—asmany of them as he can, until he sees no other power greatenough to endanger him

This type of mentality seems to be the leading cause of distrust in the first place.

    5. Competition·: This equality of ability produces equalityof hope for the attaining of our goals. So if any two menwant a single thing which they can’t both enjoy, they becomeenemies; and each of them on the way to his goal (which isprincipally his own survival, though sometimes merely his

so basically survival of the fittest.

    6. that is, more than anyone else except for a few otherswhom they value because of their fame or because theiragreement with •them. It’s just a fact about human naturethat however much a man may acknowledge many others tobe more •witty, or more •eloquent, or more •learned than heis, he won’t easily believe that many men are as •wise as heis; for he sees his own wisdom close up, and other men’s ata distance.

this sentence was kind of confusing, structurally. however, I think he's basically saying that men think they're wiser than their counterparts because they acknowledge their own wisdom at all times but not the wisdom of their peers.

    7. As for •the faculties of the mind: I find that men are evenmore equal in these than they are in bodily strength.

I can't say that I agree with this statement because some men are quite mentally inferior to others.

    8. Nature has made men so equal in their physical andmental capacities that, although sometimes we may find oneman who is obviously stronger in body or quicker of mindthan another, yet taking all in all the difference between oneand another is not so great that one man can claim to haveany advantage ·of strength or skill or the like· that can’t justas well be claimed by some others.

I guess the average person can really hone in on all types of skills but it really just depends on their interests.

    1. Fascistgovernments are condemned to lose wars because they are constitutionally incapable ofobjectively evaluating the force of the enemy

so basically the fascists' real worst enemy is themselves because their way of thinking is limiting their capability to even win wars. however, it makes sense due to their whole "permanent war" thing

    2. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition

wow, so this way of governing is so specific that even anyone who looks differently is not aligned with the "culture"..

    3. The critical spirit makesdistinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism

so you're basically not allowed the freedom to your own thoughts under ur-fascism.

    4. modernism

a movement which breaks away from traditionalism and invites a more modified way of thinking which encourages individualism and less religion-based ideology.

    5. Italian Futurists

Italian futurists were a part of an artistic movement called "futurism" which focused on speed, new-aged technology, the youth, violence, and things like cars and airplanes

    6. The sun also rises, The roses will bloom

This is quite a poetic sentence. I think it means that regardless of the negative things happening around you, life will continue to go on and growth will prevail over all.

    7. Peace gave me a curious sensation. I had beentold that permanent warfare was the normal condition for a young Italian.

This is quite a devastating sentiment. All he knew he his whole life was war to the point where he couldn't even understand what peace felt like.

    1. This contention holds that what we call our civilization is largely responsible for our misery, and that we should be much happier if we gave it up and returned to primitive conditions.

Freud believes that we must relinquish our modern civilization and resort back to simpler times to gain back our happiness.

    1. , Blacks are not a simple, unified groupwith a common life. Like other racial and ethnic groups, they are differentiaed by age, gender, class, sexuality, region, and nationality, any of which in agiven context may become a salient group identity.

this statement feels very divisive given that Caucasians were described as those who intended to keep Black people apart in my African American history courses.

No group is simple because all people are individualistic and she states that, but for some reason this statement just seems very.. oblivious, but it very well could have been intentional. her use of the word "blacks" is also a little off putting.

    2. There are really as many groups as there are combinations of people and if we are going to ascribe claims to equal treatment to racial, sexual, and other groups with high visibility, it will be more favoritism not to ascrrbe similar claims to these other groups as well"

It seems as though Sher is trying to say that if one group receives a certain spotlight that all other groups deserve the same recognition. I don't agree with Sher because if all movements receive the same recognition it defeats the purpose especially when not all movements are of the same importance.

    3. -oppression is a central category _of political discourse. Entering the political discourse in which oppression is a central category involves adopting a general mode of analyzing and evaluating social structures and practices which is incommensurate with the language of liberal individualism that dominates political discourse in the United States.

according to the author, in the minds of the listed activists, oppression is a political topic that must evaluated using ideas based on patterns within society, making it immeasurable to describe in regards to liberalist language.
