      The concept of "identity" has changed throughout time, and through history, the concepts of defined ethnicities and races (for example) have become more apparent. The conversation around identity has informed different communities' perceptions of themselves.

      The way you learn about and understand the past forms the way you understand the present, because history is a flowing story of humanity. Thus, one's understanding of the past flows into the present. How one interprets their present environment contributes to their identity.

      Considering the Middle Ages brings to mind images of castles and mead halls with harsh moral judgement. This is probably because the only two literary works that I have read from this era are Beowulf and Dante's Inferno.
