it can seem as if a genre is a thing all on its own, especially when we’re learning about a particular genre
Can't certain books/movies belong to multiple types of genres?

classrooms are recurrent situations
good analogy.
A genre evolves through human use and activity to be a durable and usable form for carrying out human communicative intentions in fairly stable ways.”
I think this definition is very helpful in acknowledging how genres are still used in literary decades and centuries later.
The term genre means “kind, sort, or style”
Most literary pieces are associated with a certain genre and are solely classified in that specific category.
But another way to think of these compositions is as predictable and recurring kinds of communication—in a word, genres.
I've never thought of these types of writings as different genres but when put like that it does make sense.
a little extra kindness
thank you. it's so nice to see that teachers understand the stress of this semester in particular due to all the strange circumstances this year :)
Use chat, nonverbal reactions, and poll responses to engage in live sessions, even if you choose not to speak
Even without speaking, there are many other ways to participate in class that show engagement in the course.
asynchronous discussion
is this considered the blog?
, maintain a writer’s journal,
Would you be reading these journals/ would we be submitting our entries or would they just be graded for completion?
these are skills that transfer to many different writing situations
No matter the career we pursue, writing is an important skill to have and it will help us immensely in our futures.
The uncertainty of the future makes people uncomfortable, and stories are a way to deal with that.
I concur and relate.
does seeing yourself as a strong protagonist come at a cost to the other characters in your story?
I think yes because if we see our closest friends and family members as side characters then it discounts their own personal experiences and struggles and it just shifts the focus to yourself in your own mind.
The redemptive American tale is one of privilege
preach
they stigmatize anyone who doesn't follow them to a T
But in books, a lot of the time, the main characters do not follow the rules of their own society. they branch out and forge their own path and those people are the ones who are rewarded.
A listener “may give you other things to think about, or may acknowledge that this thing you thought was really bad is actually not a big deal
It is always helpful to get either a second opinion on something or to just reach out for help by telling your story because by keeping an experience to yourself (especially a bad one), it can do a lot of damage.
Things are lost on 8-year-olds that a 40-year-old picks up, and things that an 8-year-old found compelling and interesting will just bore a 40-year-old to tears sometimes.”
YES! I completely agree. And i also hated Ethan Frome.
the final layer is “author,
I love this idea because it shows that wisdom can come with age and that their storytelling is passed down through generations.
they become “agents,” too—still playing their roles and interacting with the world, but making decisions with the hopes of producing desired outcomes
I never thought of it this way but I think it makes a lot of sense. In many cases, people are very individualistic and make decisions purely for their own self gain so the idea that they are agents makes sense.
I have a child who can really take an hour to tell you about Minecraft.
This sounds like hell.
They can be complicated. It can be like James Joyce out there.”
I like this comparison because James Joyce is one of the most confusing authors ever. Complicated can be good. If everything comes easy is it even worth it.
In order to have relationships, we’ve all had to tell little pieces of our story
Relationships can ever truly work unless the partners open up about their life experiences and to do that one must become a storyteller and express their story.
disjointed, avant-garde representation of their existence
In books there is always a clear narrative. The characters have a problem that needs to be solved so the plot follows their journey as they find their solution. They might run into problems and have to backtrack but in many cases they always reach their end goal by the end of the book or series. Life isn't always like that. reality isn't so one minded. Humans have goals but also have other responsibilities and sometimes their dreams have to be put in the backseat for a while until they are able to pick it back up again. Priorities switch which is normal in reality but give off the appearance of a disjointed existence.
a person’s life story is not a Wikipedia biography of the facts and events of a life
Whenever people die their life is always composed of the biggest and most "important" moments in their life. this can include events such as their position in their company, their relationships, their achievements, etc. these so called Wikipedia biographies don't touch on all the small moments that shaped their life because they aren't deemed as important as what society thinks is important. the little moments in life are sometimes just as, if not more, important as the big achievements.
‘It’s just not how I expected my life would be
No one knows how their life will turn out; one just has to go with the flow and accept that they cannot control everything and discover the good things in life even if it isn't what you initially wanted.
“Life stories do not simply reflect personality. They are personality
Everyone has experiences that influence their own lives in certain ways. Some events impact us so much that they help create and form our personalities and make us into the people we are today.
