    1. Smith got emotional talking about the moment when his 9-year-old nephew asked "Why did you hit that man, Uncle Will?"

lots of emotion and emotional words in this article

    1. Smith added that “change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”

ends on a note of apology and a positive outlook for change

    2. “I don’t have a bunch of s— about what happened, so if you came to hear that, I have a whole show I wrote before this weekend,” he told a Boston audience at his first show post-slap. “I’m still kind of processing what happened. So at some point, I’ll talk about that sh--. And it will be serious and funny.”

He pokes fun at the incident but suggests that he will bring this topic back into the media when he feels he is ready to address it more.

    3. The Academy has banned Smith from its membership for 10 years because of the slap. The actor resigned from the organization prior to the ban announcement.

concluding detail that answers some potential questions readers may be asking.

    4. Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face,” Rock said, later adding, “I’m not a victim. Yeah, that s— hurt, motherf—. But I shook that s— off and went to work the next day. I don’t go to the hospital for a paper cut.”

I have seen this quote over and over again through the various articles. It seems to be the only solid quote authors can get from Rock about the event.

    5. : 'I am not a victim'

This headline was used in another article i studied so i can only assume that this will be based around Rock and him being a bigger person in this incident by not adding to the drama.

    1. Smith is clearly deeply apologetic about his moment of madness. ‘I want to do my best to positively contribute to the world,’ he says. ‘I want to contribute joy. I want to contribute ideas, art. And it is my deepest and most humble intention to live a life that has some value to others.’ Right now, he’s on a path to forgiveness.

ends on a lighthearted note with some hope. I am taken aback that there was nothing quoted from Rock's point of view. I guess this article was just focused on Smith and how he is healing from his mistake.

    2. ‘And then during that process, I was preparing for King Richard. And I started to see the connection between mining that emotional space and the quality of my acting started to elevate. So then from King Richard into Emancipation,I started to see through confronting my difficulties, through confronting my pain, through confronting my suffering, I was becoming a more alive artist.’

it is inspiring to write about someone who wants to make themselves better.

    3. That night, fellow actor Denzel Washington warned Smith – a devout Christian – that ‘the devil comes for you’ at your highest moment.

ironic. how did the author come across this statement? is it true?

    4. ‘My hope is that Antoine [Fuqua, director] and all the artists involved with this film won’t be penalised for my action. I think the film is spectacular. And my hope is that people will be moved and transformed by it.’

he is taking accountability and the author is highlighting that

    1. “F*** your hostage video,” Rock said to a Liverpool, England audience via The Guardian. He added that Smith was “a perfect man for 30 years” and unveiled himself to be “just as ugly as the rest of us”.

again this is taken extremely out of context. It feels as if the author is trying to suggest that Rock and Smith are hardcore beefing over the incident.

    2. Tichina Arnold says she tends to mind her business, reflecting on the Oscars slap

Its hard to believe she is minding her own business when there is an entire article written about it with her name on the title.

    3. Smith later issued an apology video, which Rock has discussed in his latest standup gigs, referring to it as a “hostage video.”

this can be interpreted in a bad way for those who don't understand stand up comedy. The term "hostage video" was taken out of context so it can be understood in several different ways for people. Many of the ways this can be interpreted is in a negative way.

    4. Smith was banned from attending a future Oscars ceremony for 10 years.

This is the first ive read about a conclusion punishment for the incident. I wonder where this fact came from.

    5. Actor Tichina Arnold who starred alongside comedian Chris Rock in Everybody Hates Chris said “you’ll understand if you’re hurting somebody else’s feelings” when asked about Rock’s Academy Awards standup and the now-infamous slap Will Smith delivered onstage.

i guess she was used because she is a first hand witness of the night? she knows the two people. The author utilizes prominence because all of these people are well known so they should grab readers interests.

    1. “I’m human and I made a mistake and I’m trying not to think of myself as a piece of s–t.”

this is the second article i read from this news source so it seems that they are not biased either way. They may just be trying to cater to every possible audience.

    1. People taking Slap jokes seriously means society is over

basically, this article is a compilation of everything the internet said about that night. Primarily just opinions of many different people with much different interpretations of the incident.

    2. Will Smith disrespected his wife and all women

again, these titles are very eye catching and are full of drama by using words like "racist" and talking about disrespecting women and "kill"

    3. The Slap “is not about you” At Teen Vogue, Stitch calls out how some people (mostly white) have decided to center their takes around themselves:

The author generalizes the responses to the incident and groups "mostly white" people together because of a tweet from a white lady who wrote about how it was traumatic to see.

    4. We must promote better awareness of and attention to personal mental health, and normalize that it’s OK not to be OK. … It seems Smith might have had some brewing frustrations and wasn’t in the best state of mind to respond to a trigger. He could have benefited from a moment of reflection or meditation and might have responded differently. Hopefully, this can be an example for young people moving forward on what not to do, and we can promote mental wellness, and discuss healthier ways to resolve conflict. .

This paragraph is not fact. We do not know what was going on in Smith's head but the author is making an assumption that he was mentally unstable. This feels like a human interest bias to me because it is a chance for the readers to relate to his mental illness that the author claims he holds.

    5. we had identified 29 distinct varieties of Slap reactions; now it’s up to 82 — and we keep finding more.

this short incident was very notable. it was unusual and was an act of violence, two things that people love to read and talk about.

    6. Perhaps by now you’ve run through your initial viewpoints but still can’t find the motivation to talk to other people about anything else. Or maybe you just want to marvel at the wide range of human reactions to one famous person smacking another famous person.

These sentences suggest to me that I am about to read a bunch of gossip and drama. That does not mean that there will be no meaning in it but I should take it into consideration while I read further.

    7. was not staged

this addresses the confusion that was in the room during that event. The two were friends so this incident was confusing to many and it was unclear if it was part of a joke or if it was forreal.

    8. At Sunday’s Oscars, Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head (she has alopecia), then her husband (and soon-to-be Best Actor winner) Will Smith ran onstage and slapped him

this states exactly what happened and why it happened

    1. So it’s not about talking about the past, it’s about acknowledging the present and doing your best to move forward.”

again, this suggests that there is much of the story that we do not know and never will know because it sounds like personal issues are involved.

    2. “Will is apologetic, you know, he’s in a better space, of course, than what he was after,” the comedian said. “People are human and as humans sometimes we make mistakes.”

he acknowledges the apologies Smith feels and supports him by saying that we are all human and everyone makes mistakes.

    3. omedian and friend Kevin Hart told “Entertainment Tonight” last night that the “Ali” actor is in a better place since the incident.

Hart is friends with both Smith and Rock. He suggests that there is remorse for the incident

    4. he comedian previously stated that he wouldn’t be talking about the slap until he sees a check with his name on it: “I’m OK. I have a whole show, and I’m not talking about that until I get paid,”

He knows that the media is looking for drama and he is willing to feed into it as long as he gets something out of it

    5. “I’m OK, if anybody was wondering,” Rock said during a show in May at the UK’s Royal Albert Hall, according to the Times of London. “I got most of my hearing back.”

he is making light of the situation and making fun of it a little while also acknowledging that the slap did hurt but he is okay.

    6. g, smacked Rock after the comedian made a bald wisecrack about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia.

this states the conflict and when and why it happened.

    7. “I’m not a victim, motherf – – ker,” the “Grown Ups” star declared. “I don’t go to the hospital for a paper cut.”

he stats that he is not the victim. This suggest that he doesn't hold the resentment for Smith or for that night. This suggests that there is more to their story and history that we won't know bc it may be personal. I remember Smith saying something like that in his insta video

    8. Also during the event, Hart brought a live goat onstage and introduced it as “Will Smith.”

this is a metaphor that Hart used. Naming someone "the goat" means they are "the greatest of all time." Hart was making light and fun of the incident and praising Smith while laughing about it

    9. After remaining mostly silent for months

he finally broke his silence after months. thats a pretty significant time and allows for people to come up with their own narratives.

    10. Chris Rock has finally broken his silence

saying that he "finally" broke his silence is significant. Adds a sense of urgency to the article and makes it sound exclusive and new news.

    1. “Disappointing people is my central trauma,” he says.” I hate when I let people down so it hurts.”

This is a powerful quote with powerful words. Using these words shows that he is human and makes us see that he has empathy and is deeply sorry.

    2. “I was fogged out by that point,”

they put the video from instagram that he posted which gives even more emotion to the incident. we can hear him and see him and make our own opinions from it but we are still influenced by the first part of the reading.

    3. CNN has reached out to representatives for Rock for comment.

they have tried to get information but they are stating that they have not received any word so at least they tried

    4. win for best actor for his role in “King Richard.”

the fact that this award detail was added shows where the author leans on this topic. Although it is a fact that he won, someone who was writing against will would not have included the detail that highlights a success.

    5. Smith can then be heard sighing

again, the author seems to want me to feel for will. They could have interpreted the sigh as a bad thing but in this sentence it is clear that it is a sigh of sorrow.

    6. “deeply remorseful”

the author chose this word choice from will smith and is in the very first sentence if this article. Automatically, i feel swayed to feel for will smith just by the word choice. It is stating that this article will be around the remorse and sorrow will feels about that night.

    1. The study coauthors only have cell percentage data from the moment blood samples were drawn from each HRS participant, Klopack explains. Without more information about what participants’ immune profiles were like earlier in their lives—especially before and after stressful events—they cannot draw conclusions about a causal relationship.

i appreciate that they mention the possible slight flaw in the data.

    2. After controlling for factors including age, race, and gender

it is stated that age, race, and gender were all taken into account when choosing and studying the participants of the study.

    3. The researchers examined the percentages of both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells

they tell us the scientific terms for what they are studying and then go on to give a brief explanation for those who do not have a science mind

    4. and five categories of stressors: everyday discrimination, stressful life events, lifetime discrimination, life trauma, and chronic stress. These five categories are “well-established health-relevant measures of social stress,” the authors write in the paper.

the author tells us exactly what the categories were that were used to measure the results.

    5. 5,744 adults over the age of 50 who had answered questions about stress and gave blood samples as part of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a large, nationally representative study of older Americans that began in 1990.

this tells me exactly who participated in the study. It sounds like it is partially random but focused on the people that fall under that category.

    6. In the study, Crimmins and other USC researchers analyzed data

Crimmins is important to note because she was the primary scientist mentioned so it is important to read into her to see if she is valid. I googled her and found lots of information on her and her past work that verifies to me that I should be able to trust what she reports on.

    1. nearby waterway behind it 'dying

This headline caught my attention of sounding like a metaphor. The author is personifying the nearby waterway and says that it is dying. I think that this word choice is meant to make readers almost feel bad for the waterway. When people feel bad or guilty about something, they are more likely to continue reading.

    1. A survey from realtor.com confirms more sellers are accepting offers that include contingencies today. According to that report, 95% of sellers said buyers requested a home inspection, and 67% negotiated with buyers on repairs as a result of the inspection findings

Again, a link is provided in order to fact check the following statistic stated.

    2. The appraisal and the inspection give you important information about the value and condition of the home you’re buying

It is a fact that appraisal and inspection give a buyer information about a home.

    3. ut the latest data from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) shows the percentage of buyers waiving those contingencies is going down.

The author likes to back up their information with other sources to fact check.

    4. you probably experienced the bidding war frenzy firsthand and may have been outbid on several homes along the way. Now you have a chance to jump back into the market and enjoy searching for a home with less competition.

The word "probably" stuck out to me because the author is generalizing again. It is likely that people can relate but it is not a fact that everyone can. They say that you can now "enjoy" house searching but that is an opinion too because some people may think that it is impossible to enjoy such a thing.

    5. According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), the average number of offers on recently sold homes has declined.

They provide a link to fact check the fact that they stated about the average number of offers on recently sold houses. They also give number statistics in the following sentences.

    6. Even though it’s still a sellers’ market and supply is still lower than more normal levels, you have more to choose from in your home search. That makes finding your dream home a bit less difficult.

The first sentence is fact that supply is lower than normal levels. The last sentence is straight opinion because some people may not see it as any less difficult. The author is generalizing and speaking broadly.

    7. According to Calculated Risk, the supply of homes for sale increased by 39.5% for the week ending October 28 compared to the same week last year.

This fact is backed up by the source so it should be valid and can be fact checked.

    8. During the pandemic, housing supply hit a record low at the same time buyer demand skyrocketed.

This is a fact that the housing supply was affected during the pandemic.

    9. Good News

This article caught my attention because stating that something is "good news" is already an opinion. I recognize that the writer is generalizing that the news they are about to share will be good news for most people but there is still a chance that some readers may disagree.

  3. Oct 2022
    1. South Omaha pregnant woman

The fact that they included "pregnant woman" was definitely to draw people in because being pregnant likely had nothing to do with the fact that she got carjacked.

    2. Omaha police arrested four teenagers on Thursday and say they carried out the crime. Officers booked the teens on robbery and use of a weapon charges

The first sentence is very to the point and tells me exactly what story I am about to read.

    3. The 32-year-old driver who was shot, Jorge Garcia, was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, but authorities say those injuries are non-life-threatening.

Disregard what I said earlier about this man, I had not realized that they did give a short update about him. Glad he is all well.

    4. "If you walk out with your head up, looking around, making contact at people, making eye contact, that tends to minimize you as a perceived victim

I've always been told this advice so I think it is valid. I try to stay off my phone and avoid lingering while searching for keys and such. The moment I get in my car, all the doors are locked.

    5. "We always try to encourage people to look up while they're walking to and from either a vehicle or into a business,"

It was nice and pretty standard for a local news channel to include some sort of security for those reading. They give tips on how to prevent something like this happening but in reality, no one is ever safe.

    6. I was at the park with my dog, I just took him out because he wasn't feeling well. I just wanted to go on a walk with him,

This made me think about how it really could have happened to anyone. She was living a normal day and was at a normal Omaha park when this happened. I think the statement makes a personal relation to those reading it. No one is safe.

    7. "They told me 'give me your money. I know you have money, give me your money.' And like you said, they're just kids so I was like is this a joke, is this, what?" Perla said

I can definitely hear the confusion in her words. I too would be confused if a little teenager came up to me trying to rob me. It all became real for her once she realized they were for real.

    8. They say one of the teens shot a man in a separate vehicle as they were driving away.

I am interested in what happened to this man that was shot. They never gave any information on if he was injured or anything. I watched the news report and they still didn't give any details which is weird to me.

    9. 27-year-old pregnant woman

I, personally, do not see how it is relevant that the woman is pregnant. They mention it in the headline and a few times throughout the story. I think that it is highlighted on to add more drama and affect than if a regular woman was carjacked.

    10. They are all 13 to 17 years old.

This is what stuck out to me in the story. These kids are so young and are carjacking this woman's car. She thought it was a joke at first because of their age. The unusualness of the age of these criminals is what struck my attention.
