I believe that King Alfonso thought it was a good idea to enslave his subjects at first because it could help boost his wealth and the country's wealth without paying the people who actually did the work. He did not want lower-class people in his country because he wanted all the things he wanted in order to live a luxurious life.

      4. The King was finally hearing from all of his people that many of the people in Portugal were being taken away for slavery. He set guidelines because he realized many of the people were being enslaved for no reason at all.

      2. The Spanish were doing terrible things in the America by bring the population from 60,000 to 17,000 in the time they were here in America. Other European countries talked down on them for what they were doing to the New World. Spain called it a "black legend" because they thought they were rumors that other European countries were throwing out. The other European countries thought they could help the Americans out by bringing their own way of living over and help them get away from the Spanish cruelty.

      4. The French came to the Americas and treated the natives with respect. They did not kill, enslave or try to conquer the natives who had lived there before. Unlike the Spanish, the French formed an alliance with the Indians and shared Christianity with the Natives rather than killing them because they wanted the land.
      5. What role did slavery play in Dutch attempts to establish Empire? -The slaves built everything in Amsterdam for the Dutch. Without the slaves the Dutch would have nothing of their own because they would not have built everything that they have. The empire would have crashed if the trade routes were not kept up to speed. If it was not for the slaves, the Dutch would have been having a totally different outlook of where they were.

    1. Now like all the surpassing beings the Earth-mother and the Sky-father were changeable, even as smoke in the wind; transmutable at thought, manifesting themselves in any form at will, like as dancers may by mask-making.

      It is amazing how descriptive the world was made. The way things are being described in this document make me think of how peaceful this world was made to be. How come it could not be like this anymore?

    2. The boy that remained in the lodge grew very rapidly, and soon was able to make himself bows and arrows and to go out to hunt in the vicinity. Finally, for several days he returned home without his bow and arrows. At last he was asked why he had to have a new bow and arrows every morning

      The boy had to teach himself how to use things. When we grow up we do not rely on our parents as much, we have to explore the world on our own.

      Sugar was becoming very popular in Asia and was quickly discovered by the Europeans. The Portuguese had to find new land to grow the sugar cane because it was required to have the right conditions to grow. This is when the Portuguese found the Guanches, an African tribe in order to take care of the sugar cane. This helped the Portuguese become very wealthy.

      The three major crops were corn, beans and squash which all had nutritional needs that sustained the cities and civilizations.

      Disease was spreading quick through pre-Columbian America as the population was decreasing rapidly. The diseases came from Europe and put the Natives in harms way.

      The Spanish was trying to take control over North and Central America. They were taking away valued goods from the Native Americans and made money off of it.

      The Portuguese found that sugar was a high profitable crop that they can get wealthy off of and decided to take action in the market with it. They enslaved Africans during the time they grew crops so they could make a higher profit in the business.

      Native Americans were the first group of people to be in North America, long before Columbus and the Europeans came. How could they take credit for finding this land first?

    7. The last global ice age trapped much of the world’s water in enormous continental glaciers. Twenty thousand years ago, ice sheets, some a mile thick, extended across North America as far south as modern-day Illinois and Ohio.

      The ice age across North America left many people to panic on how they were going to survive these harsh temperatures. They had to find many ways to stay warm and finding food was tough because they would be trapped from going out in the cold.

      • American History began before 1492 when Native Americans migrated to North America because of the Ice Age.

      2) What are the variety of exchange that occurred in Native American societies? What role did giving play in establishing status and obligation?

      • Native Americans traded many things. For example, physical and non-physical goods. The ideas of trading gave ideas and religion. For those people who became wealthy because of trading shared their ideas with people to help them become successful. This was the way the people began to start giving things back in return because they had help. There was a sense of respect for those who decided to give ideas and help others be successful during this era.

      3) What developments occur in Europe that help set the foundation for European exploration and empire building?

      • After dealing with the black plague which killed half of Europe's population. Economic growth came when the population growth began to rise and increased prices on consumer goods. This caused many more ways of things being traded because ships and navigation were starting to be used to get things around causing more places for the products to be sold at. People began to become rich off this because they made more money off selling to more areas than before.

      4) What was Portugal’s interest in slaves? What role do the Portuguese come to play in the trade of American slaves?

      • Due to the rise in sugar plantation, Portugal began to take a very high interest in slaves. When the plantations took a more widespread in the world, the Portuguese started looking for more slaves near the Senegal River, where they could find more African slaves to work for them. By the time 1500 came around the Portuguese were becoming very wealthy and helped expand slavery throughout the world.
