    1. He still assured her that he was the swellest man in the state.

This is likely the same love that he gave Delia when they first were together. I think later down the line, Sykes will continue the cycle and treat Bertha the same way he is treating Delia.

    2. She seized the iron skillet from the stove and struck a defensive pose, which act surprised him greatly, coming from her. It cowed him and he did not strike her as he usually did.

Delia understands her significance to Sykes even if he doesn't and that's why she can get herself to stand up to someone who is physically way stronger then herself.

    3. He stepped roughly upon the whitest pile of things, kicking them helter-skelter as he crossed the room. His wife gave a little scream of dismay, and quickly gathered them together again.

This line shows that Sykes doesn't care about the clothes being clean and is just being stern to make things harer for Delia

I think about it and you right. Tonight I find Hilda and say sorry. And make promise I won't beat her no more. You hear me, Boet Sam?

Willie is showing character development. He wants to become better and stop physically assaulting Hilda. He feels regret and wants to apologize.

    1. HALLY: [With conviction.] No! It can't be. They said he needed at least another three weeks of treatment. Sam's definitely made a mistake. [Rummages through his school case, finds a book and settles down at the table to read.] So, Willie!

Hally is not happy to see his father, the reason is unbeknownst to the reader. I wonder why Hally is reacting this way.

    2. HALLY: Tried to be clever, as usual. Said I was no Leonardo da Vinci and that bad art had to be punished. So, six of the best, and his are bloody good.

This quote demonstrates how discipline was handled during this time period. They used violence for even the smallest things as art that is deemed bad.

    3. 8HALLY: [Goodness gracious]! Have you taken her to see a doctor? SAM: I think a vet would be better.

Sam has no respect for Hilda and doesn't care about her injuries and doesn't even think she deserves a human doctor, but instead a vet.

    1. Claire fears that she will lose both her mother and her other mother, but it turns out that it is worse to lose only one

Claire is deeply traumatized by the loss of her mother.

    2. and what she has been doing, tonight, is drinking.

Claire handles her grief by indulging in eexcessive amounts of alcohol. She still doesn't know how to handle loss properly

    3. uckyoufuckyoufuckyou@gmail.com thinks she is a cunt. Twenty-two different rednecks from around the country have sent her supportive pictures of their penises.

I think this quote demonstrates the chaotic nature of the internet. People are wild and aren't respectful, especially towards opposing views. This quote is actually eerily realistic.

    4. Claire accepted the girl’s friend request, but she wasn’t really aware that hallmate was a thing, a relationship carrying some expectation of trust or camaraderie.

This quote shows that Claire isn't well adjusted to the lifestyle that she is in

    1. Abruptly, she hated him— deep, bitter hatred. What did literacy mean tohim—a grown man who played cops and robbers? But he was literate and she wasnot. She never would be. She felt sick to her stomach with hatred, frustration, andjealousy. And only a few inches from her hand was a loaded gun.

This line establishes that even the main protagonist is prone to jealousy. Her jealousy for someone who was literate turned into hatred. This ignorant hatred makes me wonder why she is illiterate in the first place. Perhaps her violent hatred is impeding her ability to learn from others, judging by her desire to kill this man for simply being literate.

    2. Rye watched him wearily. People might very well stand by and watch if he tried torape her. They would also stand and watch her shoot him. Would he push thingsthat far?

This line establishes the people of this world to openly mock and undervalue women. The man was quick to assume that Rye was offering her body to someone and the laughter of the surrounding people gives me a feeling that this idea is accepted by the people.

    3. Loss of verbal language had spawned a whole new set ofobscene gesture

This line establishes this world to be one without verbal language. Why don't the communicate verballly?

    4. This was an attitude of superiority and that was the way people likethe bus driver perceived it. Such "superiority" was frequently punished by beatings

This line shows how in this world, when people are jealous of anyone that they perceive to be better than them, they act out of rage immediately without thinking and react violently. This line shows how jealousy can quickly turn into hatred.

    5. She returned his gaze, very much aware of the old forty-five automatic her jacketconcealed. She watched his hands.

The intense cautiousness Butler depicted with this line, creates a clear understanding for the reader that people are not to be trusted and that in this world, anyone can be your next enemy. This line establishes a tense mood to the reader.

    6. People watched the pair, then looked at one another and made small anxioussounds. Two children whimpered.

This line emphasizes Octavia Butler's style. Without using any direct dialouge, Butler establishes the clear sense of uneasiness from the surrounding people just by describing their body language. This line shows that the surrounding people are curious and anticipating something negative to happen between these two people on the bus.
