Enjoy diving into these humanities-specific classes, always remembering that any course you take at the University will, at its foundation, be based on humanistic perspectives designed to help you see the world from multiple angles, equipping you to address the world’s — and your community’s — challenges in new and unexpected ways.

      I never looked at it this way, but now I see that humanities is the base of most courses.

    1. When artists communicate legal information, their perspectives can help make that critical information accessible, comprehensible, and approachable.

      I think art would help me understand legal issues much better.

    1. In that class we are able to utilize design principles, design thinking, storytelling, and socially-engaged art projects to help students and community partners access legal systems and understand legal issues.

      This is really interesting to me because I wouldn't have thought you can use art in law.

It creates shifts in perception, attitudes, and thoughts by allowing us to make connections. These connections can be developed through the shared experience of a song, the kinship one develops with a character in a play or novel,

      You don't realize how much of an impact different kinds of art can have on people. Art creates strong emotions within yourself and its also a way for people to connect.

    1. Such metacognition — thinking about one’s own thinking — is a key learning outcome of the University’s Gen Ed curriculum, and will empower you to explore your own thought processes and gain access to completely new ones, no matter your major, career path, or life journey.

      I have heard the term metacognition on repeat during my schooling. Teachers really emphasize the importance of metacognition in all different kinds of courses.

      This is an important skill to have for many different reasons. Learning how to look through other perspectives can help in many different careers and with learning in general.

    1. While I loved learning (I still do) and took my coursework seriously, I didn’t see the connections between what I was learning and what I wanted to do for a career,

      This is exactly how I felt about a lot of my classes. I know that in the end I will be happy I took some of these courses but this was definitely a recurring thought in my head during some of these classes.

    1. when you are in motion — your goals, thoughts, actions — you are positively affecting someone.

      You sometimes don't realize that when you are doing well you can have that affect on the people around you. The more you surround yourself with people who are doing well the better you will be.

    1. Being accountable for yourself is difficult if you’ve never done it before. I had to ask for help and it made me feel as if I couldn’t achieve the success I was so desperate for.

      This was a problem I faced first semester that caused me to struggle. I missed classes and wasn't the best student I could be.

    1. I can’t pinpoint exactly when it happened, but one day in high school I found myself with a new group. It was that feeling you get when you realize, “Hey, this is more than just another class full of kids. I’ve got a new group!”

      I relate to this sentence because something similar happened to me in high school. I made some of my best friends in one of my classes. It felt like a whole new group.

    1. In the same way, reflection allows you to think about and become aware of your own thinking, also known as “metacognition.”

      I am learning how important metacognition is in psychology. Reflecting on your learning can help with many different parts of education.

    1. However, all of these jobs were in fact relevant work experiences because I was able to learn from each of them.

      No matter what job you have you can always take some type of experience from it.

    1. I know the transition to college can be difficult.

      It was difficult for me and a lot of my friends to adjust to college life first semester. I learned a lot and will hopefully do better this semester.
