To me, this shows the disconnect between them. Sure, it's awkward to discuss your sister's ability to get pregnant with her, but not being aware, or not being clued in kind of reveals Ted's lack of empathy or ability to connect. At the age of 37, you'd think that your brother would be aware of the fact that you've been having trouble getting pregnant and wouldn't have to blatantly ask out right.

This is fantastic. It perfectly encapsulates the feeling that I might get when I'm confronted by someone I love or respect saying something that I just can't get behind. The feeling that you may love someone unconditionally and want to avpid any conflict with them, but their beliefs fundamentally contradict yours.

I love how this clause, in the middle of describing a very tense situation, pauses to provide some context and paint a better picture of the story. The detail feels almost completely unnecessary at first, it doesn't develop the story at all, but it helps ground it and make it feel more real, which I think adds a lot of depth.
