Something I think is missed by many of its viewers. The message is just subtle enough that to many, if not blatantly told then they would miss it. Many would just assume United States if better than Mexico end of story.
From this producer's perspective, themain plot problem with El Mariachi was that it varied too muchfrom genre conventions, which would frustrate viewer expectationsand likely result in a boxoffic e dud.
This is something we see a lot in Hollywood. American viewers often want new ideas but prefer to watch things that familiar. Movies are changed or plot points are shoe horned in simply to provide similarity and predictability, often at the expense of the filmmakers original vison.
