    1. I was surprised at the sheer number of works on the site and I was just looking at the “games” category–thousands of stories

Perhaps a good spot for students to check out, to be inspired about writing!

    2. Fanfiction.net allows writers a cohesive community with a broad range of genres to explore.

Going to have to look into this site-

    3. have only a passing familiarity with fan fiction. It’s one of those things that I didn’t follow or read and instead discounting the value and possibilities of the form. Now that I have done some searching of fan fiction, I am amazed at the volume and scope of the creations.

I love reading your post, you always give such great intro that make me want to learn more! I have to say too that I love your 'voice' a little sarcastic, informed, knowledgable and funny.. it's always a good read, even when I have no idea what it is that I am reading!

    1. I enjoyed experimenting with this Wiki Walk and exploring how a student might learn new things by starting with a topic of interest and ending up where ever the flow of information leads them

I like this idea- of a wiki walk, it would be interesting to have multiple students look into one topic on different pages and see if there paths cross. so many idea brewing... Thanks for sharing and showing a different (for me) viewpoint.

    2. “Wiki Walk

Interesting concept- I have always been taught that wikipedia and wiki pages were bad and not viable resources- good starting points to gather information that would then need to be verified.

    1. Trying to live vicariously through other people won’t help you represent anyone else except them.

Besides in travel... For some of us it i the only way to see the world at this point in our lives!

    2. We impose whiteness upon people of color by inspiring them to emulate our standard, which we believe is the correct one, all the while ignoring the intricacies of individuals and cultures in a giant act of colorblindness.

Very well said, I love how you simplify the concept in a concise sentence.

    3. How do we represent ourselves with our own digital stories?

Great question! I love your photo selection for this section as well.

    1.  It is like producing the stage show version of your short story.

      great analogy

    2. Get the thoughts our first, then get help cleaning it up.

So similar is the practice in art, don't focus so much on the details until the idea is developed, it is hard to get students to practice in this way, as they want every thing they do to 'look'good and be the best, it is a reteaching!

    3. 7th grade that showed me how to write about what inspired me.

How did she do this? What kind of things did you do differently?

    4. required to write about something we

I have even felt this way about some of my story critiques, there is a huge difference in my writing success when there is passion there!

    5. We need them to be inspired

So true, trying to capture inspiration can sometimes be difficult, with such large numbers in the classroom, but I think digital stories opens the door to a lot.

    1. hen students bring technologies to the class they make visible their expertise, which they share with instructors and students alike, as the Introduction to Fiction students did with their Beloved digital gallery.

This is such a fight to see the introduction of technology by students as a non threat- I have to agree that we need to allow them to showcase their skills sets in technology and help to refine their usage and of course to teach responsibility.

    2. his use can lead to “self-education in the world of teaching with technology,

I would never have learned to do so many things in a technology class, this is so true! I have guided my own learning, and thus have been far more passionate, and the outcome has greater results.

    3. critical co-investigators.

This aids also in anti bias teaching-

    4. participate in their education

We need more of this at the k-12 level, teaching students how to learn-

    5. cost-free

except for the technology needed- this will be the only hic-up to using it in my school

    6. Open digital platforms can break these implicit rules to make spaces for joint inquiry among all members of the college community in the spirit of Freirian ideals of critical pedagogy.

      YEAH Paulo!

    1. now welcome an open and honest conversation about what it means construct more vibrant learning opportunities and environments.

    2. now welcome an open and honest conversation about what it means construct more vibrant learning opportunities and environments.

Thank you for allowing us all to learn from this experience and become active participants in this journey. At some point, as we all continue to value the thoughts of others and think about the ways that our past has kept cultures and people from obtaining the very things that we hold dear, I am honored to be a part of this learning network. May someday this struggle not be at the forefront of everything that we do, until that day comes, thank you for your continued leadership of ethical, just and inclusive education.

    3. I used “unnecessary theoretical jargon,

I think this is often times used in place where there is a lack of understanding, theory becomes 'jargon' when it is either misunderstood or the learner lacks the background to build a clear understanding, or complete unwillingness to change. Critical Whiteness theory is often referred to as jargon in this same manner.

    4. Shall I not — in reference to, or while presenting at, COLTT — publicly critique my own positionality as a privileged, white, and male academic in the field of educational technology, all while contributing to a national conversation about gender inequity and institutional bias in higher education?

Something that we ALL should be addressing and presenting-

    5. as a white male in higher education

Thank-you! For acknowledging white hedronormative society, and the issue that it is in education.

    6. I cannot and will not silence myself, trade diversity of thought for a few CV lines, and gag opinion because my expression might upset an abstract group of “others.

Can someone please propose these to someone that needs them, like Trump!

    7. Advocates of academic freedom will surely appreciate the ease with which I decided to both withdraw from the 2016 COLTT Conference and write this public letter.

Such a great statement, and lesson to be learned, as a student it speaks volumes to the type of educator that I too hope to become.

    8. First, I will not under any circumstances barter basic tenets of my scholarly activity — including freedom of thought and expression

I love here that these are 'basic' tenets- So true, and should be at the basis of everything that we all aspire to do.

    9. “ensure that you adhere to the content proposed for your sessions.”

Ahh, yes please to don't stray from the proposed academics to broaden or enlighten those that are listening, its best if no questions are asked right?

    10. “calibrate your voice on twitter to meet the tone of COLTT as to not upset others,”

How then is one to spark conversation and 'learn; from each other without disagreement?

    3. first Daily Create

Week 5 daily create- I think it is too large to add as a link so here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JjIIQg-qDk

A extra special dc today, as this was my first experience with Imovie and digital storytelling back at the beginning of a career change from Interior& Industrial design to Teaching 3 years ago.

I watch this from time to time to remind me of why I entered the teaching field in the first place. It keeps me grounded in a way-

      Cheers- all comments welcome!

    1. I suggested we reconsider what we mean by “critical,” and proposed that universities aim to promote criticality that centers around social justice and empathy as a more fruitful approach than one centered on skepticism and antagonism.

I light of current events, this couldn't be more true- being critical without having a proposed solution is no better off than one that just complains.

    1. Students can annotate their own writing either to show where they could revise or to explain how they have revised a piece

This could be great for SIOP and CLD practices-

    2. semester-long conversation on each other’s class blogs

Im going to ask here- as there are so many participants- How do you solicit conversation about your blog posts?

    3. Peer review

WHOA- Nice visual, even as adults I think that it is nice to have a reminder as to 'how to play along'.

This could have been handy at the beginning of class for us first timers! I would 'remix' this and go over it before having my students work on annotations- a good digital book mark-

    4. to take ownership of a particular article and identify rhetorical strategies and fallacies themselve

Interesting, I like the possibilities of the ownership via independent work, it could then possibly be exchanged for another students work, for more comparison and contrast ( speaking from a k-8 teacher here)

    5. encouraging close attention to choices that authors make when they write.

So encouraging critical thought about the context and biases that may or may not be highlighted in the writing and topic?

So far my experience has shown that it may be better to question rather than agree, or make statements to achieve a dialog or conversation from other participants?

    6. it was literally digital sticky notes

Nice comparison, I have used noteablilty in the same fashion, for class.

    1. But it's important to me and on the 25th I found out a friend's nephew killed himself. He was a teen, gay from Bountiful, UT.

Sorry to hear, Orlando has brought attention to many people that wish not to be attended to, but with this sadness I hope also comes an awareness, that this was a 'hate' crime, and the same places that firearms are not allowed will always be the target, as the people are sitting ducks, unfortunate, but yes I do agree with the rights to bear arms, (educated, and trained).

    2. Second year, so many mistakes, so many new ideas. And I am passionate about what I do because I'm passionate about understanding the distance between the have and the have nots..

And this my friend is why you are a great teacher- PASSION! you care, not just about the pay check but each student and their success as individuals in a society that has placed them on a path of false hope.

    1. I am in a position at a university where I help faculty and staff with delivering quality hybrid/online content.

Interesting that you are in this position and still feel such an affinity to your own online creation!

    2. So – well played, Hypothesis. Well played.

I think these are the kinds of things that it is important to teach students when learning to blog, how to be critical and responsible at the same time.

    3. Perhaps it’s because I spoke of my anxiety and discomfort, which is a feeling many others can identify with.

I think so , you are definitely not alone!

    4. a little like displaying a personal journal in a shop window, for friends and passers-by to read at their leisure.”

I find that I still see 'journaling' and blogging as two different mediums. I don't think a journal solicits comments or opinion, but because of the nature of the blog, it does. When someone is going to see the writing and is able to comment I think we write differently in anticipation of that comment or reply.

    5. Ultimately, they found blogging in the open to be an engaging space that promoted conversation and learning.

Because we cannot see the person that we are reading about or hear their dialect, it does help to break down a lot a bias- we just have to remember that the whole digital affinity is somewhat class bias to start, as only those that can afford technology are often the participants.

    6. another person’s blog and have a new identity in that space.

This makes me a little crazy, how do we keep authenticity in this sort of structure? I agree on having slightly different personas, but I am not really sure about this...

    1. It is interesting to see the debate between animal rights and animal welfare issues.

I think that this ties nicely with what is going on digitally too- there are a lot of view point as to what is right and wrong.

    2. here are federal regulations and then there are local regulation on top of those that require an additional inspection of safety practices.

And there are really none for all this chatting and such that we do in this digital affinity space- hmmm

    3. When it comes to digital story telling I have a hard time stepping outside of it having to be a video production of sorts. I know this to be wrong of me but I continue to go back to videos. So seeing a blog as a digital story is quite intriguing.

And I keep reading things and forget to look at videos, memes and everything else. digital Story telling encompasses so much and there are so many different ways to go about it.

    4. I struggled with was having those who comment be considered co-authors.

I too was a little confused about this, do people really go in a change what they wrote in a blog because or for a comment? I would think that it would spark another convo, but not editing the current. I fell like that is like saying, um forget I said that during a conversation and then editing in something else, we don't forget, and really it would be hard for me not to focus on it then!

    5. I am not the only one that struggles

Of course not, we all have our own 'hang' ups. For some blogging is easy where annotating is harder, it is all a learning process! Learn on!

    6. I gained some familiarity with some terms such as autoethnographic and hypertext

Yes! Some great opportunities to learn some new vocabulary and broaden our digital horizons

    1. Especially during the pauses and the fade to black transitions. These deliberate disturbances in continuity add even more to the story by allowing you the time to emerge even more, to hear her words in your head, to form meanings to the words.

Beautifully written, articulate and concise. I have come to love reading you posts. Your choice in film is always very cool! Cheers!

    2. face.

It is so softly lit, as if to imply a sense of vulnerability and innocence.

    3. I like the black and white canvas. Color can be a distraction unless it adds to story or character

It also again allows the viewer to add their own color while watching it through imagination. I think the choice in color also lends to the raw beauty and emotionality of the film.

    4. While watching, and listening, you see the organic expressions

Absolutely! This kind of expression and emotion is not staged, it is authentic and that is part of what makes it so beautiful.

    5. I think it is like a poem: with many meanings.

Or that it is up for interpretation for the viewer, each person gets to choose what it means for them, so transcending when the viewer actually becomes the act of investigation and part of the art itself.

    6. It is hard to critique something that is….just perfect!

WOW- Beautiful. Beautiful cinematography, soft light, deep black. Typography does not overshadow, soft music, the emotion on her face is amazing, audio control is fantastic!

    7. It is hard to critique something that is….just perfect!

    2. money

Totally! The all mighty dollar! http://gph.is/28LP8kQ

    3. day

If done correctly I think it could quite possibly be quite effective to show just how much math one encounters in just one day.

    4. The graphics were simple and it could have been made a lot more visually interesting with video and not just photos.

It is so unfortunate when people do no take the time with all the digital literacies out there, and made so easy...

    5. http://digitalstorytelling.coe.uh.edu/view_story.cfm?vid=93&categoryid=6&d_title=Mathematics

    6. 2 hours of math a day for 12 years

Either do I , I mean teaching it from a text book, but there are so many ways to look at it.. it is everywhere

    7. life without math

Very hard to imagine, I mean it is really everywhere. I think that in education we just go about showing it's importance the wrong way-

There is so much math in art, I love when teachers allow a little cross curricular planing and we are able to expose the students to multiple ways of seeing the ever dreaded MATH.

  3. Jun 2016
    1. strategic hope,

Reminiscent of what Paulo Freire is talking about in hope that is real-

    2. The work of scholarship should be the work of imagination.

I think I want this in a poster for the wall- THIS is a inspiration poster!

    3. Where in a traditional classroom, the instructor holds the keys to knowledge, and they can lock it away whenever and in whatever portions they deem fit, digital culture hangs its hat on the ideal of openness and access:

And hopefully a return to discovery and critical thinking along with a creative process.

    4. critical reflection once it’s done — to pull off.

Insert the use of google art project- time and effort, but worth the end product.

    5. seeking to crack open the raw possibility inherent in technology-inflected learning.

Exactly! So necessary before just jumping in and expecting to teach and have student inherently learn the nuances of digital responsibilities.

    6. The digital isn’t magic. It isn’t mysterious. It’s regular human communication astride a new medium. There’s no need to make it more than it is. No need to lie or elaborate. Because in the digital, there’s wonder enough.

So well articulated to dispose any previous negative affirmations about digital affinities. Like a discovery of a new color, paint or burn technique.

    7. she in my periphery and I in hers, with an asymptotic reach through the screen as our praxis.

      Beautiful, true writing-

    8. I rebelled when Brontosaurus was renamed Apatosaurus

Oh good, here I though I was going crazy and we had 'lost' a type of dinosaur.

    9. I was spending hours in the public library poring over every book I could find

This is the type of intrigue and self exploration/discovery that I think we are lacking in today's education, there is no time, only testing..

    10. I was spending hours in the public library poring over every book I could find

    11. lack of wonder I was educated into

"I believe this passionately: that we don't grow into creativity, we grow out of it. Or rather, we get educated out if it. " Sir Ken Robinson

    12. iar. Or, storyteller

Interesting context of words, liar seems to indicate that the person is aware of some sort of dishonesty, whereas the storyteller is more of a recount of events, unaware of the direct of factual honesty and truth of the story.

So if you knowingly improvise the truth , you then are 'fibbing' or lying!

Another daily create, # 2 for this week. A little homage to the man that made animation possible, and changed photography- Edweard Muybridge! I used IMovie to bring his stills back to life with none other than Mr. Cash's 'walk the line'. https://youtu.be/5uuRMABElxk

      Week 3 Daily create #1

    1. The student has become the master:

I am not sure that the students have become the masters, rather the lines drawn between have been erased. We are learning to accept that the best is not always right and that there are many things to learn from each other and this may be more important that learning a single concept. Discovery and the act of research are far more valuable than rote memorization, even if we all come up with different explanations.

    2. more agency in their roles as learners in order to take matters into their own hands by “doing” rather than “learning”.

This is such a great concept, I am not sure it always works, in our title one school, students do not have the resources at home to really in act a flipped classroom, so some teacher do 'flipped days' to give the students access to the technology required to create the flipped atmosphere.-

    3. conflict between a traditional understanding of copyright and ownership with the societal changes inspired by DIY values.

I learned this to the hard way as a student at Metro State in the Industrial design program, as students all of our work was 'owned' by the university- So strange, a small group kept their best ideas out of the classroom, and took the lower grade to save the rights to the designs!

    4. make the materials and educational experiences better for everyone

I do agree- but we need to teach some responsibilities for posting, reviewing and commenting with younger students. I do love the exploration that is added, a much better way to learn.

    5. This is especially apparent in the case of Open Educational Resources.

I am still a little worried about the use of the word resource here as I am immediately reminded of WIki and what a great starting point for research this is, but a terrible place to pull all your facts from as it is an editable site and the person that wrote it is probably not an 'expert'.

But then again who is an expert these days anyway??

    6. Instead of passively absorbing and consuming content under the industrial model of the past, digital media and its many forms have given users power and agency by allowing them to remix and reuse

Excellent way of explaining- I now understand your Us and Them to Us and Us!

    7. The theme of this week’s response is “Us and Them to Us and Us”

I am going to read this 12 times- what does it mean?

  4. lfrappao.wordpress.com lfrappao.wordpress.com
    1. The other term I liked a lot was “participatory culture”. This term in my mind defines the generation we teach. They are constantly creating and sharing online. We as educators need to help transfer this to the classroom.

How do we change the negativity in education around allowing and expecting students to be 'connected' as a resource. I would love to see a class in digital responsibilities at the 6h grade level or maybe even in 5th grade. We have really as a society unleashed this giant tool without an instruction guide or any warning labels. And yet we expect people to use it responsibly?

    2. DIY Self-directed making within the home workshop is presented as a productive psychological release from the challenges of office-bound, intellectual employment”.

Beautifully stated! I agree- what do you think it means after reading both articles?

    3. but it is. Does that mean that the TV show South Park is one giant DIY project?

WHOA! YES! I didn't even think of that- what artistry and comedy, and homegrown!

    4. This week before I did the readings I thought of DIY as little art projects now I think of our society.

I love how the context of words changes through time! so interesting, like we are "seeing with new eyes" - Gallagher! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5OTUxSIo7c

  5. janetemerson.wordpress.com janetemerson.wordpress.com
    1. Perhaps seeing an image of her after the crash or the other person involved in the crash.

I would agree, images are so powerful-

    2. We work at a job we hate, to buy things we don’t need, to keep up with people we don’t like.”

Ohh, I really hope not- sometimes it may feel that way, but that is why we must never give up looking for an occupation that helps us help others, to keep us all grounded.

    3. “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”

Ok I am a nerd for that NY real estate show, and this instantly reminded me of Louis.

    4. I watched many videos and tried to find one that spoke to me.

Sometime I too feel overwhelmed with the amount of possibilities of selection, I have only just realized that we can select videos... it a learning curve!

    1. For me

I LOVE that they start with typography, and how important it is to a film, the credit are the movie, its what starts the imagination.

    2. Definitely an incredible animation in terms of production. Especially the first few frames. but it got distracting

Interesting that you point this out, I loved it the first watch, and in the second time I found my self observing different things. I think that that is very purposeful production. It's like when we can watch Casino 5 million times, because every time we notice something different.

    3. Martin Scorsese’s On Framing is the digital story I picked for this week’s critique

I love this choice, because he is know as such a mastermind in the industry, The opening is fantastic, the voice, the attitude, so Scorsese.

    4. Partly, because I just love watching and hearing, experiencing (indirectly) someone else’s life.

I love this statement, I think we are all interested in the the lives of others, but how many of us really stop and observe in the moment! Great!

    1. See Kelsey’s work

If you are here in Denver: See her work in person http://kelseymontagueart.com/butterfly-wings-in-colorado/

    2. (#WhatLiftsYou),

Is her work only so popular now, because we need something good to be a part of, something positive? Without the hashtag, would it be the same?

Check out her work: http://kelseymontagueart.com/ All over the world, one better than the next, not all with the same hashtag- Is it the intricacy of the line work, the scale, the story behind it that makes you like it...

    3. A message designed to get people to think and to inspire them?

A discourse! Her work creates discourse by being interactive, you can look and talk about the work, but you also talk about it because you are now a part of the work.

Who doesn't want to fly, have wings or be inspired.

Is she a psychologist that understands the human psyche? Or just someone that stopped and looked around for something small that we all can be united by.

    4. All men

BOOM! This happens all the time- we live in such a hedronormative society.

I has one of my classes google famous artists in multiple genre and mediums, The task was to find 10, only ten women listed, it was impossible. No matter where you look, women have been discounted and not recognized, no matter the importance of their contributions to art as movement or the forwarding of a medium.

    5. I realized that Instagram is the democratization of art and I was being voted for.

I love that this no name person has used the tools in front of her to promote her work, the public has done all the leg work sending her work around the globe.

I think that we need to remember that in this digital age, these are all tools. As I learn to tweet and be connected digitally, it is amazing the amount of art that is shared at any given moment.

    6. important or unimportant in art.

Her use of importance here also questions the value aof art produced. She has never been featured in a gallery or museum, so is here work of value? Can it be considered high art ( Street art is not generally valued, or considered high art, Bansky and other artist are changing this prospective).

In this weeks reading we looked at the author and the reader, who is the work for? Here is a prime example of the arguments that both are benefited in different ways.

    7. It was at that moment I decided – no more.

Perseverance! Such an important lesson to learn, rather it is in art or any other practice-

    8. art and social media

I am not sure that Montague realizes the social impact of her work, as it now made into lessons that teachers are using around the globe in art rooms.

Her story is one that I share with my students about perseverance, positive aspects of social media in a time that many of our youth are using it to tear each other apart, and 21c interactive work.
