    1. Having got a name for his horse so much to his taste, he was anxious to get one for himself, and he was eight days more pondering over this point,

I believe that the choosing of the horse's name and the horse's name itself are important actions that happen in this piece. They are notable because the name "Rocinante" means "ranked before all other horses." Don Quixote believed that he was ranked above everyone else and that his horse deserved a name that reflected that as well. Details like this give subtle hints to what Don Quixote's personality might be like.

    2. ith Don Quixote, Cervantes breaks barriers of genre and creates something that is immensely insightful, deeply ironic, and all together enjoyable.

Cervantes is a Moor who supposedly chronicled the true historical adventures of Don Quixote. He "breaks barriors of genre and creates something that is immensely insightful" by basically taking down the fourth wall of reading and making the reader feel all the emotions the characters are feeling, while still being a feel-good piece. It also makes the reader think, as it presents worldly problems. Many say that Cervantes voice "ushered in the modern times."

    1. heard various unfrozen words

Rabelais's description of words spoken as "unfrozen words" is an interesting way to describe them. By doing this, he views them as a physical being of a sort, rather than merely words on a page. By doing this, he is highlighting just how important these words actually are and causes the reader to pay closer attention.

    2. Good writing, but particularly good satire and social commentary, stays with you and reshapes the way you see the world.

This quote in particular struck a cord in me, because it is absolutely true. Reading a good piece of literature can change your life and give new meaning to the world around you. An example of a book "reshaping the way you see the world" would be "The Giver." While many of us probably read this short novel in high school, I read it on my own last year and it made me more appreciative of the world we live in.

This particular quote uses the word "satire," which means "the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues." The use of this sort of literature was prominent in this time period, as jokes in plays and novels were often used to expose or poke fun at important people, as shown in Dante's Inferno.

    1. Amen.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is already different than all the pieces of literature we've read in this class, purely because all the other pieces we've read have been epics and poems, which this one is written as a traditional story. However, the ending and beginning of this story is unique in the way that it begins with a song and ends with a prayer. The prayer signifies Sir Gawain's relief to being alive after all the events that took place, although there could be other symbolisms to it.

    2. Her forehead was wrapped in silk with many folds

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a piece that was written during the 14th century. At this time, women's fashion was evolving and women began to have more say over what they wore and what was deemed "acceptable." It was common for women to wear a head veil, such as the one that "that fair lady" (Sir Gawain) is described wearing. The necklines on women's dresses were also beginning to be made lower than they used to. Gowns that were long and dragged along the floor was considered a symbol of wealth in 14th century society.

    1. Richer than holy fruit on Vedas growing,

The Vedas is the religious texts that Hinduism follows. Much like the Bible is to Christianity and the Torah to the Jewish religion, the Hindu's believed that the Vedas held all the knowledge in the world, relating to the "underlying cause of, function of, and personal response to existence." The term "veda" means "knowledge."

The Vedas is one of the oldest, if not THE oldest, religious text in the world. The difference between the Vedas and other world scriptures, however, is that the Vedas wasn't believed to have been relayed to one specific person or people at a certain moment in history. Instead, they are believed to have always existed.

    2. Arjuna is concerned about fighting the opposing army since it contains friends and family. Krishna reassures Arjuna that he is performing his dharma, or holy duty.

Dharma doesn't mean just one thing in Indian culture. In fact, it has different meanings across different religions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and others. In Hinduism, "dharma" is life, including duties, laws, rights, virtues, and the "right way of living." In Buddhism, "dharma" means "cosmic law and order." In Jainism, "dharma" relates to the "purification and moral transformation of human beings." (“Dharma.” Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation, 17 Jan. 2022, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dharma.)

In the case of Bhagavad Gita, "dharma" is taken in Hindu context and is directly related to the natural law and human conscience. It is seen between Arjuna and Krishna when Arjuna is having an eternal struggle with whether or not to fight in this war.
