    1. Not every girl who comes to my school will be a PhD, but every single one of them will achieve her full potential and will become an advocate for her children and her grandchildren for years to come.

This is the overall goal. that girls will be able to have equal access to education and opportunities that education bring them, even if they don't become doctors. They will still be able to reach their full potential and be able to go to college where they can get a degree and emerse themselves in whatever job they want. This would not be able to be true if these girls were not able to go to school when they're young.

    2. 400 girls have not gone through FGM in my village, in a region where nearly 80 percent of women have been cut.

This is such improvement. Girls are able to not only continue their education, but they are able to not undergo FGM and child marriage. This gives these girls more oppportunities and more chances at a better furture.

    3. What would happen if the boys grew up with the same mindset as their fathers before them? I’ll tell you, not much will change

This is another important point, because while you may be able to encourage a few families with daughters of the importance of having girls be educated, if families continue to have the mindset that women and girls don't belong in education, the community won't be able to move forward with this new social norm.

    4. With each visit, he built a strong relationship with his daughter — noticing not just her grades but also accepting her as someone with full potential.

I think this is also another goal that is accomplished with the creation of schools in areas where girls normally don't go to school, or don't stay in school for very long. It allows a change in the mindset of elders who may not have had the same views originally, but once introduced to the program, see the bennefits that it has on their daughters or grandaughters. This helps normalize the idea of girls in education throughout an entire community.

    5. I needed allies in the government and in the community to help advance my goal.

This is important to understand because while one can build an run a school, in order to get more girls involved, which is the overall goal, you need funding and help from people who are in charge such as people in the government and leaders of the community. In America, schools get funding from local government funding that is given from the national government in order to allow us to have the things we do such as laptops and certain facilities. This is what this woman needs in order to further advance her school and get more girls involved to help facilitate the norm of young girls going to school instead of getting married.

    6. dreams of becoming a pilot someday, and her family now supports her, and best of all, her younger sisters will follow in her footsteps.

It is beyond heartwarming to hear of a young girl who originally wasn't even going to go to school now talk about her future job. This is why education is so important, because it allows girls to be able to see themselves in jobs that they wouldn't even dream about being in if they weren't in school. It is also so nice to hear that her family supports her and that her sisters will be given the opportunities that she was given, which are steps in the right direction.

    7. She stole an egg from her mother’s house, went to the market, sold the egg and bought a single pencil. Then she walked five miles, clenching that pencil, trying to enroll.

The amount of effort that girls in other countries have to do just to be able to enroll in school is heartbreaking. This poor girl was denied access by her own parents, and resulting in having to do it herself, and walking 5 miles to do so! This young girl deserves the education she fought to get.

    8. o before a girl could learn math or history, she needed to feel safe

I couldn't imagine having to worry about such tragedies on my way to school. This is such a sad reailty that these children had to go through, but this teacher would not stop until she was able to give these girls the education they deserved, which is absolutely amazing.

    9. but they had no energy. Then I realized they were hungry,

this is unfortuantely very common, even in the American school system. Being that school lunches cost money, even though there is free and reduced lunch meals, some children can't afford it and therefore don't eat it. Children who also aren't eating at home due to a lack of food deal with the same issues these girls did, they are exhausted during class and can't focus. This is not a good learning environment, since these kids aren't focussing as well as they would if they weren't hungry.

    10. I had hoped for 10 girls. 100 came.

This shows that these girls don't want to go down the cycle that they've seen so many their age go through. This shows a community that is ready for change, and girls that want to go to school.

    11. Girls were still going through FGM, still leaving school, still getting married to men older than their fathers and still having children when they’re teenagers.

This puts these young girls not only at a disadvantage when it comes to education, but it puts them at health risks since having children so young isn't very good on a girls body. By the looks of the picture, FGM doesn't look very pleasant either, and should not be done on young girls.

    12. FGM was supposed to mark the end of my childhood and, by extension, my education

unfortunately in other countries, women don't always have equal access to education. this women shows how once she hits puberty and has this surgery done to her, she would no longer go to school. Knowing that girls can expirience puberty anywhere from as early as elementary school means that little girls in places of the world are being taken out of education at such young ages. This is so upsetting, as girls deserve equal access to education.

    1. Europe depends on importing millions of tons of soy from South America, where its production contributes to global warming, to deforestation, to biodiversity loss, to feed livestock here in Europe

This is really upsetting to hear because climate change is rapidly starting to effect our lives and is becoming, and has been, a huge and important issue that we need to start tackling as a whole, and to hear that a type of food production contributes to this when the food produced contributes to food waste is insane. These are things that should be shown to the public, because we need to open our eyes to issues that we contribute to every day.

    2. we, the people, do have the power to stop this tragic waste of resources if we regard it as socially unacceptable to waste food on a colossal scale,

This is so true because when people think something is socially unacceptable, they probably won't do it because we live in a society where we just follow social norms. By making food waste taboo like in the place the speaker was talking about, I could guarantee that people would at least stop wasting as much as they do because they would be looked down upon by society.

    3. farmers, who throw away sometimes a third or even more of their harvest because of cosmetic standards.

This is something that is frustrating within the food supply companies, because when things don't look right they won't get sold, even if they are things that we are fully capable of eating.

    4. but what I discovered whilst I was writing my book was that this very evident abundance of waste was actually the tip of the iceberg.

Working in the restaurant business, I know that what he found here is not the biggest of it. Just the other day one of the cooks brought out a bunch of desserts he made and said if it didn't get sold today, it was going to be thrown away. All that food used in the dessert, and all the desserts, would all be thrown away just because they were made ahead of time and weren't sold. I have also seen first hand the amount of food that is wasted in relation to what people don't eat. the amount of food that people don't finish and then throw away each night is absolutely insane, and is something that needs to be addressed as a society and as a global problem.

    5. That is not a superlatively efficient use of global resources, especially when you think of the billion hungry people that exist already in the world.

The way we use food is extremely wasteful, and when you think about countries that don't have enough food, it should make people not want to waste all this food that we have. We are very fortunate to be able to have the resources we do and we don't take advantage of it enough.

    6. when we chop down forests, as we are every day, to grow more and more food, when we extract water from depleting water reserves, when we emit fossil fuel emissions in the quest to grow more and more food, and then we throw away so much of it, we have to think about what we can start saving.

The speaker makes a very important point here, because if we continue to do things that are harming our planet so we can have such huge surpluses of food, and then we just waste that food, what are we really doing as a society. We need to start thinking of ways to create an environmentally friendly way to produce food while making sure we are being sustainable with our food as well.

    7. So a country like America has twice as much food on its shop shelves and in its restaurants than is actually required to feed the American people.

This says a lot about these countries because it seems like having more money is more important that being able to not waste food, or donating food to other countries that don;t have enough and are experiencing shortages. Not every country is as lucky as those in North America, and if we are able to have more food than we need to feed our country, than why not donate to countries who don't?

    8. Unfortunately, empirical data, good, hard stats, don’t exist,

This is the first problem with this food waste. When there isn't data about how much food is being wasted across the globe, it doesn't make people realize the issue and allows more people to keep contributing to this problem. This data is something that should be looked at and showed because it is a global problem, just like climate change or food shortages around the world, which do have data to support those issues.

    9. confronting large businesses in the business of wasting food, and exposing, most importantly, to the public,

This is important because oftentimes these big businesses get away with thing like this huge food waste because the public just doesn't know about it. By opening up this information to the public, if opens up the conversation to people who are possibly contributing to the problem and can change as well as showing which big businesses contribute to the problem and push them to change.

    10. I thought, surely there is something more sensible to do with food than waste it.

I feel like this is common sense. There are so many better ways to deal with this kind of food than to just send them to the dump to be thrown away. Like this man did, you can give it to animals, or you can compost. There's so many better options that we as a human race are not capitalizing on.

    11. food that I was giving my pigs was in fact fit for human consumption

This shows that the food that we waste is food that people can eat, but because it may not look good enough, or we take too much than we can eat, we end up wasting more food than necessary. Showing that the food he feeds to his pigs are food humans can eat, it shows that this is food we don't need to be wasting.

    12. I went to a farmer who was throwing away potatoes because they were the wrong shape or size for supermarkets.

This is such an interesting sentence because what I don't think people realize is that when food doesn't look a certain way for the supermarkets, they just get thrown out. This is a huge waste of food that people who don't have a ton of money or live in countries where there is a food shortage would love to have. It is honestly ridiculous to think that food is thrown away just because it doesn't look a certain way.

    1. we can get the countries that are currently underperforming on social progress — the Russia, China, Indias — just up to the average. How much social progress does that get us? Well, that takes us to 65. It’s a bit better, but still quite a long way to go

This shows that it is not just a few countries that need to do better, but that every country needs to do a little better. With just those counties under preforming on social progress it doesn't change much from the average score of the world and is still far from the Global Goal. It takes more than just doing better, too. The world needs to be actively using it's wealth for the people's well-being or order to get to our goal. This is a role for the whole world, not a select few countries because everyone can do better and there's always room for improvement.

    2. if we prioritize the well-being of people

This statement is something that really sticks out because it is assumed that a country would prioritize the well-being of people. It may seem like first nature to some people, but to others, including the leaders of certain countries, that is not their priority or goal. Even in America we often see our leaders not prioritizing the people's well-being, like Flint, Michigan, who hasn't had clean water since 2014.

    3. From poor countries like Rwanda to richer countries like New Zealand, we see that it’s possible to get lots of social progress, even if your GDP is not so great.

Although the trend line shows the richer you are, the more social progress you have, that is not the case for countries who have low or moderate GDP yet have lots of social progress. It is possible for poorer countries to outshine richer ones when looking at social progress because being rich does translate to achieving the Global Goals.

    4. Economic growth seems to have really helped in the fight against poverty, but it doesn’t seem to be having much impact on trying to get to the Global Goals

Just because places are richer does not mean that their social progress is high. With wealth can come problems, as the speaker says. Economic growth helps poverty because a poor country won't be able to help it's poor citizens. In relation to problems like climate change, though, economic growth won't really be able to help much, which seems to be the same concept when looking at other Global Goals.

    5. The Social Progress Index basically asks three fundamental questions about a society.

It seems like common sense that in order for the world to be who it want's to be people need what is being asked in the three fundamental questions. Unfortunately in places all around the world, including places in America, these needs are not met. It seems unreal that people lack access to health and education, let alone food and water, but that is the reality of certain places around the world and these questions are what we needs to be answered first before progress is made towards the Global Goals.

    6. This year, global poverty is going to fall to 12 percent.

It only took 14 years for global poverty to exceed the goal of 18 percent, and fall to 12 percent. Often times when people bring up similar ideas, like reducing carbon emissions to create a cleaner Earth, they are shot down by people saying it's not possible. I'm sure plenty of people thought it wasn't possible to bring down the global poverty percentages, but the data says otherwise. People need to be more open to the idea that the world can get better and we can make improvements on a bigger scale.

    1. and forming an opinion after you fully understand their point of view

Although it can be hard not to jump to conclusions, we must allow others to fully explain their opinions before forming our own without hearing them through. It's unfair to base our opinions on someone without hearing their entire story.

    2. if the roles were reversed

This is an interesting concept because often times when people aren't being compassionate, or are treating others in a hateful manner, they fail to realize how they would feel if they put themselves in the other person's shoes. People who are able to have this type of empathy are often people who are more compassionate because they treat people the way they would want to be treated.

    3. knowing we’ll fail on occasion

It's important to note that the author acknowledges that we can not always be perfect in life. There are times where people won't always be compassionate, and people will act out of anger, and we must understand that everyone is human and will make mistakes. It is in our best interest, though, that we try our best to be as compassionate as we can.

    4. to incite hatred by denigrating others—even our enemies

Being told to be nice to everyone, even people we don't like, is easier said than done. Often times people act out of anger or are caught up in the moment, but I think the author is trying to explain that it is important to not spew hate onto anyone, regardless of who they are, and instead be compassionate.
