    1. write a response to an article, such writers might offer their own views on the article’s topic while hardly mentioning what the article itself argues or says

When writing an article writers will write about their views instead about the articles because any reader can read the article and know their view, but they won't know the writers view. So its important to talk about your view more than the article.

    2. Readers won’t be able to follow your unfolding response, much less any complications you may offer, unless you keep reminding them what claims you are responding to

This is true because at times readers will forget about what you're talking about because they may wonder or lose their place, so it's important to keep letting them know your argument and why.

    3. Instead of opening with someone else’s views, you could start with an illustrative quotation, a revealing fact or statistic, or— as we do in this chapter—a relevant anecdote

These are some ways to start a paper about a specific topic or person. Plus it will help the reader know some insight about your topic if the reader doesn't know about the topic firsthand.

    4. The point is to give your readers a quick preview of what is motivating your argument, not to drown them in details right away.

If you let the readers know why you're writing what your writing then it will give them an insight on what to expect, plus it would probably be straight to the point. Unlike if you give all these details that they can most definitely find online.

    5. to keep an audience engaged, a writer needs to explain what he or she is responding to

I would agree with this because the writer wouldn't want to bore the reader, but keep him or her engaged and excited about what's coming next.
