As the boys responded to the literature as a community of readers, they began to think about serious problems in their communities, and to make suggestions to address those problems. This evolved into preliminary enactments of personal, commu- nal, and civic social action.
This is great to hear! By making the readings more realistic, students are able to more easily connect what they are reading to what is happening in their own life. I feel that this is especially useful to discuss issues that they may be unfamiliar with discussing.
