This quote resonates with me, as its something that I have found to still hold true both in high school and in University. Professors at the University today continue to offer office hours for students to talk to them both about school and occasionally about their lives, and conduct research side-by-side with students. I also think that this quote expands to the Housing and Residence life that exists today, since first-year students learn a lot from their Resident Advisors and Senior Residents, who they live and study with every day.

I find it especially interesting how the University emphasizes how there is not "Accessory of an hospital", but today, the hospital is integral to the learning process and helps thousands of people on a daily basis. Also, it is interesting to reflect on how the medical profession has changed at UVA. The school is now renowned for its nursing program, which didn't exist when the school was founded. It is also worth noting that nursing has historically been a predominantly female profession, and while the nursing school was founded in 1901, men weren't admitted until the 1960s. This parallels how the University was founded in 1918, but women weren't admitted until the 1960s.

It is interesting that the authors note that Spanish is spoken by "inhabitants of our Continents" , with whom they wanted to have a "great intercourse". Today, thousands of Americans speak Spanish, and students choose to learn Spanish to communicate with people in their own nation. As America grows and changes, Spanish will become increasingly more important and prevalent.

I find this quote extremely ironic, as this document "violates the equal rights" of both the indigenous peoples and slaves. This sentence looks forward to banning "all arbitrary and unnecessary restraint on individual reaction", but also states that the University's purpose is to push the intelligence of the white population ahead of that of the indigenous population. The University was intended to promote "individual action" and thought, but only for white males.
