    1. Not only were the girls tired and hungry from chores and long walks to school and back home, they were also not safe. It’s a sad truth, but girls are often assaulted, raped and even kidnapped on their way to school.

In addition to FGM, the harsh things that some girls may have to go through such as assault, rape, unwanted attention, judgment on social media and comparisons to other girls just because of the way their body changes after puberty is a huge reason girls are uncomfortable, not confident and not empowered.

    2. Girls were still going through FGM, still leaving school, still getting married to men older than their fathers and still having children when they’re teenagers. I did not want to see any more girls go through that. That’s when I knew what I needed to do to give back to my community.

Cruel treatment such as FGM that some girls may go through could definitely be a leading reason that girls are unaware of their self worth, may feel less than or are not empowered.

    3. To empower girls, you need to educate them.

I agree with this statement. I believe that this is a powerful way to start the speech, and I believe that it is indeed important for girls to be educated on themselves, their background, their abilities, their freedom, etc. in order for them to know their worth, be confident and be empowered.

    1. So a country like America has twice as much food on its shop shelves and in its restaurants than is actually required to feed the American people.

The amount of food in a county should only be the required amount of food needed to feed everyone without much leftover waste.

    2. As a country gets richer, it invests more and more in getting more and more surplus into its shops

As our country gets more rich every year, we should probably think about reevaluating the amount of money we spend on food, since all it's doing is increasing the amount of waste produced.

    3. I’d seen bins full of food being locked and then trucked off to landfill sites, and I thought, surely there is something more sensible to do with food than waste it.

If we find more ways to repurpose and reuse food scraps, rather than throwing them away, we would be able to reach SDG goal 2, "no hunger" sooner than expected.

    1. What if every country in the world chose to be like Costa Rica in prioritizing human well-being, using its wealth for the well-being of its citizens?

It seems that when the resources are used more for the people, versus spending money on materialistic things, places are able to meet the global goals sooner.

    2. Russia has lots of natural resource wealth, but lots of social problems. China has boomed economically, but hasn’t made much headway on human rights or environmental issues. India has a space program and millions of people without toilets

Money is not the solution to these problems. The goals that we need to meet go deeper than money, and just because a certain place is doing well financially, does not mean that there are no other problems. They could still have social issues such as people not being treated fairly or issues where everyone doesn't have fair access to resources they may need.

    3. does everyone have the basic needs of survival: food, water, shelter, safety? Secondly, does everyone have the building blocks of a better life: education, information, health and a sustainable environment?

Making sure that everyone has met the basic needs of survival and has the resources to improve is the first and most important thing to consider when discussing the steps that need to be taken in order to meet the goals for our world. It is important for these needs to be met when it comes to improving our world, because they help to reveal what drives human behavior and makes people want to achieve certain things in life.

    1. (acknowledge someone’s ideas before presenting your own)

I think acknowledging someone's ideas before presenting your own is important when interacting with others, because it helps us better understand our peers even during disagreements and helps us maintain respect.

    2. The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical, and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves.

Compassion can be very simple being that it lies in all things we do.

    3. knowing we’ll fail on occasion, to restore compassion to the center of our lives

I think it is important to know that failing sometimes is okay. This will help us better understand compassion.
