    1. As a new(ish) member of a university community, you may be inter-ested to know that, like TikTok, the academic community as a whole isalso too large to be meaningfully examined as a singular discourse com-munity.

I agree with this statement and it relates to what I said about the definition of a discourse community. A community like TikTok is too large to be identified as a discourse community because it is a social media platform that includes various contents and communities.

    2. Throughout that first semester, I picked dead invertebrates from aslushy mixture of dirt and sand for eight hours a week. As we saw in theprevious section, mundane tasks often serve as a foundation for adjustingto new environments.

I agree with this because mundane tasks may be meaningless when I do them repeatedly. But these are the foundation that would help us when new and complex tasks are added.

    3. By being held to the same scrutinyand high standards as my peers, I really felt like I was no longer just anundergraduate intern but recognized as a true researcher

This is great to hear. I'm into her story and I feel like I'm with her in her internship journey

    4. For an undergraduate with little formal lab training, there is only somuch autonomy you can attain since most procedures must be learnedunder supervision

That's truly the meaning of an internship

    5. Circling back to Swales’criteria, it is clear that my peers were self-sufficient enough that they wereable to recognize and participate in the rhythms of work that support over-arching lab goals.

I think Kelly just needs time to adjust herself and her mindset in this new situation. Clearly, others were familiar with the situation so they were not as sensitive.

    6. More precisely, I didn’t (yet) feel I had the rightto use such mature terminology because I still had so little experience. Inow realize that the attribute I lacked and yearned for so distinctly wasauthority.

I can relate to Kelly's feelings because I would be like her when I'm in a new situation. I would be afraid to touch things if I'm unfamiliar with them.

    7. My mentor often said thatmice perceive their handler’s emotions and react correspondingly

This saying is new to me. I didn't know that mice would react according to the handler.

    8. First, Swales suggests that a discourse community is defined by a broad-ly agreed upon set of goals

If this is true, then many communities can be identified as discourse communities. I think there can be more definitions of the term.

    1. ive ourselves time topractice and learn what we need to know in order to write success-fully in that new situation

I agree that it's important to give ourselves time to settle down and transition into the new writing situation and context. We should know that there will be different expectations and standards.

    2. Butpeople want to believe that it’s possible to write in general becausethis belief makes writing seem less difficult and allows them tobelieve that writers can get a one-time writing inoculation thatwill extend across all settings.

I agree with this statement because always find myself wanting to write something in general when writing about a broad topic but ended up using specific examples. I find it to be less difficult to start writing with the intention to write in general and less difficult to write in specific when actually writing.

    3. The same is true forany other kind of writing—we write in our journals and think ofour future selves or anyone who might find the journal

I can relate to this because I often refer back to my journal when I think of any event or situation that came across my head. When I write something in my journal or planner, I tend to write it as if I'm talking and telling a story to my future self.
