    1. ‘Eugene, do you design to capture and desert this girl?’ ‘My dear fellow, no.’ ‘Do you design to marry her?’ ‘My dear fellow, no.’ ‘Do you design to pursue her?’ ‘My dear fellow, I don’t design anything. I have no design whatever. I am incapable of designs. If I conceived a design, I should speedily abandon it, exhausted by the operation.’

I find it ironic that Eugene admitted Lizzie was one of the finest women in all of london yet has no intention of marrying her but most likely has plans of pursuing her. Eugene finds himself above most, or perhaps above class itself. He claims he does not design, nor has a design, as if he thinks of himself separate of such social systems

    1. The object he had expected to take in tow, floats by, and his own boat tows him dead, to where we found him, all entangled in his own line.

I find it suspicious that Gaffer suddenly dies in the middle of this controversy with Riderhood. I also find that the inspector has such a long winded explanation off the top of his head when he hadn't conducted a legitimate full investigation yet.

    2. ‘I say, a good house in a good neighbourhood, good things about us, good living, and good society. I say, live like our means, without extravagance, and be happy.’

Reading this made me meditate on how wealth encourages people to live a certain way. I was curious and started googling the homes that various sports stars and celebrities lived in, and nearly all of them had multi million dollar massive mansion homes. I never realized this was the case, and is far different from my own world view that is centered around the idea of minimalism, or having only what you need and little else. I just found it interesting that Mr. and Mrs. Boffin lived and had lived for years in modest circumstances and did just fine, and suddenly this money has them getting up and changing everything about their lives. The fact that they still decide to hold onto their current home despite moving out is more evidence that their previously modest life was just fine for them

    3. ‘Have we got a pest in the house? Is there summ’at deadly sticking to my clothes? What’s let loose upon us? Who loosed it?’

To me it seems like he is referring to some sort of ghost or curse; his son has left, his daughter has fainted, and his reputation is in the dirt. Upon taking it all in, it feels like that "deadly sticking to my clothes" is a curse, and the curse was cast by someone or something.

    1. Mr Podsnap inquires what would become of the very large fortune, in the event of the marriage condition not being fulfilled? Mortimer replies, that by special testamentary clause it would then go to the old servant above mentioned, passing over and excluding the son; also, that if the son had not been living, the same old servant would have been sole residuary legatee.

I find it weird that the book describes the conversations unfolding rather than actually having the conversation. It states that "Mr Podsnap inquiries" instead of actually creating dialogue, which is an odd choice and something I haven't seen before. It makes it feel as if I am reading a summary of the book rather than the book itself as the events are taking place
