    1. I sighed, knowing what was about to happen. I waited. After considering her answer, she broke the silence, finally. She said, “No, movies about how bad they had it.”

Yes, old people are ignorant and racist. Welcome to Earth.

    2. When Justin Timberlake started out making his solo tunes, it was Timbaland that was the real star, the prolific producer and hip-hop artist responsible for many of the decade’s biggest tracks.

In my opinion, this is because of the split between singers and producers. Name one pop song you know the producer of. You named 0. Exactly.

    3. The whole thing was silly, racist and wildly Orientalist — because Asian people are not pets —

I seriously do agree with this, though. The normalization of racism against Asian peoples is astounding. sometimes, people don't even realize they're being racist.

    4. However, Cyrus is hardly alone in borrowing from black artists, and cultural appropriation has become the new norm amongst pop royalty.

Wow! Did the author just use the words "borrowing" and "cultural appropriation" interchangeably? Interesting...

    5. It’s currently outpacing both of Mackelmore’s breakout hits, an artist who at least has been reflective about his own place as a white artist in a historically black genre.

Of course the author panders to the white artist who is well-versed on these subjects. Her use of the word "at least" implies even he hasn't done enough, painting every other non-black artist as more or less racist. Of course you want black artists to thrive in a historically black genre, but bash non-blacks for doing the same?

    6. She doesn’t even know that life. Cyrus’s new image is a cheap costume to sell records, as authentic as dressing up as Pocahontas for Halloween.

Yeah, that's how Hollywood works. Didn't you point this out in the first paragraph? why are you shocked?

    8. the black women show Cyrus how to twerk in order to give Cyrus the prerequisite street cred.

One can very easily make the argument that it's just the dance routine, or this appropriation doesn't reflect reality. But, if you take a step back, this incident really does show the problem with how black women are represented in the media.

    9. She has the right to hypersexualize herself, but Miley shouldn’t exploit others in the process. That’s not being Miley. That’s being naive.

Why is the Author blaming Miley? I guarantee that scene was created by a creative director, or at least approved by someone higher up.

    10. a pre-manufactured scandal that your grandmother might be outraged about. A pre-made punching bag if there ever were one

I find it really refreshing to see the author come to terms with reality and blatantly dismantle Hollywood culture in such a simple way. By pointing out the seemingly obvious fabrication, the author immediately sounds like he knows what hes talking about and gains the readers trust.

    1. Keaton was born into a vaudeville family in 1895. In the era of silent film, he had mastered using broad physical comedy as a way to spark uncontrollable laughter from his audience. Steamboat Bill, Jr. was a classic of this form, famous among film buffs for its incredible stunts. The film was classic Keaton— wildly popular and among the best of its genre.
