    1. And sky - such an 0! overhead - night and day   must be burnished and rubbed   by hands that are loving   so the blue blazons forth   and the stars keep on shining   within and above   and the hands keep on moving.

I thought it was interesting how the poet used the phrase “such an O!”, I had to read it a couple times to get the hang of it. I think the use of the exclamation is to highlight the interest and adoration the speaker has towards the sky. The mentioning of night and day signifies the skies constant involvement and presence. The words “burnished” and “rubbed” created an image of hands working to polish “the stars so they keep on shining”. I think it was quite clever and creative as it created a strong image in my head and to be completed with “the hands keep on moving”, implying that there needs to be constant work done by humans to ensure the quality and beauty of our bright days and beautiful nights.

    2. like a lover coaxing, or a mother praising.

This is a simile that makes a comparison between the way one should love the Earth and the way a lover or a mother expresses affection. By comparing the relationship one has with nature to a deeper personal relationship with a loved one, it creates a stronger image and allows an emotional connection. Conveying the idea that caring for the planet shouldn’t feel like a job but more so that it should be treated like a personal relation, made out of genuine love like a mother has for her child or continuous love and attention one gives to their partner.

    3. It has to be

The repeated phrase “it has to be” emphasizes the urgency of caring for the planet. This repetition reinforces the idea that protecting the Earth is not a choice but a responsibility that requires continuous effort. By insisting on what has be done, the poem advocates for humans to do their part in respecting nature.

    4. the protean, wine-dark, grey, green, sea   with its metres of satin and bolts of brocade.

The use of the word protean signifies the the seas constant change in color and movement. The reference of the water being “wine-dark, grey, green” really represents that. The comparison to rich fabrics like satin and brocade portrays the idea that nature is valuable and should be admired. I also saw it representing the movement that satin has, how it can flow smoothly and gracefully.

    5. It has to be ironed, the sea in its whiteness.

The metaphor of “ironing” the sea expresses a sense of care and renewal. As ironing smooths out wrinkles in fabric, it can symbolize that action and work is needed to repair environmental damage to Earths waters. The “whiteness” of the sea could symbolize cleanliness, the idea of bringing our waters back to a purer state.
