to commence the higher branches of education, of which the legislature require the development: those for example which are to form the statesmen, legislators & judges, on whom public prosperity, & individual happiness are so much to depend.
Here the document states that one of the objectives of the university is to provide higher education to the people meant to become statesmen, legislators, and judges. I find this interesting for two reasons. The first is that today higher education is somewhat assumed to be a staple for anyone who wants to be successful in making an large income not just those who are meant to be statesmen, legislators, and judges. Today higher education is much more common and much more necessary. The second reason I find this interesting is that the document says that "public prosperity and individual happiness" is dependent on the people receiving this higher education. I have trouble agreeing and disagreeing with this statement. I would agree that the statesmen, legislators, and judges have a huge impact on public prosperity which in turn can have an impact on individual happiness, however, I think many would disagree that their happiness is dependent of statesmen, legislators, and judges. - Jo Herget
