    1. Colonialism is when one group or country subjugates another group, often imposing laws, religion, culture, and languages on that group, and taking resources from them. Colonialism is often justified by belief that the subjugated people are inferior (e.g., barbaric, savage, godless, backwards), and the superiority of the group doing the subjugation (e.g., civilized, advanced).

Although Colonialism sounds like very immoral, because it is invasive and not built on equality, however, colonialism did fast and efficiently changed some country in history and made them more wealthy and developed. Like the former Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, says that "I am glad that the British colonized Singapore. We are grateful for their departure!" Lee Kuan Yew once said: "Most Singaporeans are descendants of Fujianese and Cantonese. Their ancestors were illiterate and poor. The key to Singapore's success is The rule of law system left by the British, not some Confucian culture."

    1. Then, much of tech is dependent on exploiting cheap labor, often in dangerous conditions, in other countries (thus extracting the resource of cheap labor, from places with “inferior” governments and economies). This labor might be physical labor, or dealing with dangerous chemicals, or the content moderators who deal with viewing horrific online content.

I am kind of not sure about who and where are these cheap labor comes from. I think many tech companies are now use very high salary/compositions to hire qualified scientists to develop new tools, either software or hardware. I don't think these are cheap labors. The Development of many of these tools they are developing cost more than profit, but they are still insisting creating new/"better" things for future.

    1. “an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market”

This definition sounds very neutral, I am not sure why I have always thought of capitalism as a negative word. Maybe it's because I am from China and china is a socialism. The socialist market economy (SME) is the economic system and model of economic development employed in the People's Republic of China. The system is a market economy with the predominance of public ownership and state-owned enterprises. When people in china talks about Capitalism, we think about exploitation of worker.

Capitalism is often hear with the word "exploitation".Capitalist exploitation thus consists in the forced appropriation by capitalists of the surplus value produced by workers. Workers under capitalism are compelled by their lack of ownership of the means of production to sell their labor power to capitalists for less than the full value of the goods they produce.

    1. What do you consider to be the most important factors in making an instance of public shaming bad?

Being the victim of a public shaming has the potential to ruin your life—financially, emotionally, and physically. In the most extreme cases of online harassment, we have seen the worst-case repercussions over and over again: young people taking their own lives and adults losing their livelihoods. I don't think there's anything good to the victim of public shaming, but I think it provides the public people a hot topic to discuss and to learn.

    1. Shame is the feeling that “I am bad,” and the natural response to shame is for the individual to hide, or the community to ostracize the person. Guilt is the feeling that “This specific action I did was bad,” and the natural response to feeling of guilt is for the guilty person to want to repair the harm of their action.

I never thought about the difference of these two terms, I think this is very interesting to separate these two concepts. If I am understanding this two concept correctly, I think a good example would be, I feel shameful for being ugly, and I feel guilty for lying to other people online and use fake photo.

    1. Women of colour, (black, Asian, Latinx and mixed-race women) were 34% more likely to be mentioned in abusive or problematic tweets than white women.

I found a relative article about this topic, https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/press-release/2018/12/crowdsourced-twitter-study-reveals-shocking-scale-of-online-abuse-against-women/ Women of color are more likely to be mentioned in abusive or problematic tweet than other people because of their race, their sex, their ethnicity, and their age.

    1. Crowd Harassment

A lot of fake news has turned some ordinary people into targets of cyberbullying. For example, a Chinese single young woman in China was scolded as a cheapskate and a bad person who exploited working people because she asked her delivery boy to deliver food to her elderly parents in the same city as her during the epidemic. . The reason is that netizens think that the 200 RMB reward she gave is too little. Eventually, the woman became depressed and committed suicide.

    1. In what ways do you think you’ve participated in any crowd work online? What do you think a social media company’s responsibility is for the crowd actions taken by users on its platform?

In what ways do you think you’ve participated in any crowd work online? Answer: I searched a lot of questions and found good and reliable answers on wikipedia and qoura and stack over flow.

What do you think a social media company’s responsibility is for the crowd actions taken by users on its platform? Answer: Yes, because they set up a platform like this, they have controls on the content over the platform, so they need to be responsible for it.

    1. Visualizing Networks

I searched on google about visualizing network, since this page does not contain a lot of explanation over this topic. I found that visualizing network is basically visualize data, using network diagrams. There are several good common options to set up these diagrams by python, PyVis, NetworkX, and Visdcc in Dash

    1. Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that is crowdsourced by volunteer editors

I know that wikipedia allow public people to edit it to make it better when people found something not true or unreliable or not detailed enough, but will these directly change what wikipedia show on the website? I believe wekipedia must have a group of professional people to review these edit, otherwise, wouldn't the content be more unreliable if everyone can just edit it without screening?

    1. Block an account: a user can block an account from interacting with them or seeing their content Mute an account: a user can allow an account to try interacting with them, but the user will never see what that account did.

I like the individual user control of block an account, because it protect us from being constantly harass by people online. The mutation is also very good, because sometime there's group chat where many people chatting at anytime, muting without blocking give us the option to eliminate the disturbance and still be able to see the chat history. It just give me a peace of mind.

    2. Ban: Platforms can permanently ban users, and also try to ban users coming from certain internet connections

According to CNN news 2021, https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/08/tech/trump-twitter-ban/index.html Twitter bans President Trump permanently. “After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” Twitter said. Social medias really have exclusive power to control the moderation of content.

    1. The truth about incels is that almost all of them are completely normal looking guys

This is very special point, so these group of people, which is self identified as "Incel", they are not short on anything, they just mentally depressed and think they are hopeless. It's all about an attitude. Also "Incel" is not just self harming, they are a group and sometimes are organized to attack the society, produce mass murderers/terrorism. This is way beyond self harm.

    1. They found that people who were given more negative posts tended to post more negatively themselves.

This is a very interesting point. I believe this is true, because when people receive negative content, we feel upset because of sympathy. So we really needs some energy to digest the bad feeling. However, the recommendation algothrm is just a machine, I do not think it is suppose to make people happy, when a person is fond of watching sad stories or hearing sad songs, the recommendation algorithm will just recommend similar content to the user, this is how things work, right?

    1. What strategies do you think might work to improve how social media platforms use recommendations?

I think keep track of every user's like, comment and views is very important. Also do survey and remember what the user don't want to see more is very important, too.

    1. What experiences do you have of social media sites making particularly good recommendations for you?

I like social medias to show me the post I am most interest of. I can see what I care the most at the first time, for example, I can see what my close friend's post before see others' update. I also like to see breaking news where everyone talks about at the first time.

    1. When is it ok to not cite sources for content?

When the author specifically stated that he/she does not allow unauthorized repost or reused, we all should respect the original. Some people like to be copycat of good YouTube videos, they are so "bold" that some even claim what they had copied from other people are ideas of their self. The original authors is really offended when such thing happened.

    1. Memes

Based on my personal understanding, meme is usually a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc., that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by internet users

    1. or even when they do participate in the design, they aren’t considered to be the “real designers.

Why? Is there any blocker issue or barriers for disability to gain access of the process of designing? I am not very sure about what it means by even they do designed, they are not considered to be designers.

    1. Making a tool adapt to users

Iphone has several features to adapt to different people. For people who cannot see well, like senior people, they can enlarge the font and all signs when they are using the phone. People can use voice input, when they are not convenient to type.

    1. Inferred Data: Sometimes information that doesn’t directly exist can be inferred through data mining (as we saw last chapter), and the creation of that new information could be a privacy violation.

I guess maybe when we try to search some product on google, like for example, you want shave your beard by yourself, and you watched a video of how to do it, then the algorithm and big data analysis will know you might want to buy a bread trimmer. Also when you are buying one product they will send you ads about the related product, for example, you buy baby formula, they send you ad for baby clothes and toys, ect.

    2. Non-User Information: Social Media sites might collect information about people who don’t have accounts, like how Facebook does

I guess maybe when you don't have an account, you can still open the app and browse public account, then Facebook can collect your IP and record your personal preference base on what post videos you have viewed.

    1. Do you think there is information that could be discovered through data mining that social media companies should seek out

sometimes, I get coupons code from McDonald give me special coupon codes, which my other friend don't get, for example, I get a 50% off for a ice cream cone, but my friend just got 30% off, we don't know why and what makes the difference, but maybe McDonald's think I can only afford 50% for the cone, they want me to spend money on it, so they give me a higher discount. I am not sure if this can be considered as "fair", but I think this coupons are based on personal income, and asset.

    2. Are you surprised by any of the things the can be done with data mining?

I am surprised by Bank of America payment alert, I was shopping on amazon using my friends prime account yesterday, and my credit card payment did not go through, I did not know what exactly Bank of America detected, but since I am shopping on a new amazon account, they cut of my transaction. I think they must went through my cookies, otherwise, how can they know?

    1. What do you think is the best way to deal with trolling?

I think the best way is to avoid trolling, avoid exposure yourself online, if you don't expose yourself, the bad people would not be able to hurt your. I know this is hard and not for everyone, but we don't know how the bad people choose their target to troll, so just to avoid from get hurt, less exposure is a good option for myself.

    1. Trolling is when an Internet user posts inauthentically (often false, upsetting, or strange) with the goal of causing disruption or provoking an emotional reaction.

Will the people behind trolling get punished? How can we protect ourselves? Is there any effective law enforcement against trolling?

    1. Sharing those same experiences and emotions with a close friend may look very different, but still can be authentic Still, these modifications of behavior can also be inauthentic

What is the boundary between authentic and inauthentic? What if some people have multiple personalities, when he present them out, who define which is inauthentic?

    1. Many users were upset that what they had been watching wasn’t authentic.

People like to watch something that is surprising, outstanding, dramatic, The girl is clever she act in this channel to create a public image is not real and corresponding people's taste, triggering people's curiosity. People are unhappy because it is not authentic, but ironically, this is fictional figure is exactly something that people like to see.

    1. Internet Relay Chat (IRC) let people create “rooms” for different topics, and people could join those rooms and participate in real time text conversations with the others in the room.

In one of my favorite Korean TV show "Reply, 1988", Kim Jung Bong was chatting in a privative room like this, many people in from age found it was very interesting and nostalgic to see such scene, because it is related to their youth and old memories. The interface of social media is becoming better and better, 15 years ago I was still using something like AOL Instant Messenger, now we have cartoon faced 3D image and animated filter, we can video chat over the world. It's so nice.

    2. n early bulletin board system. The entire interface was just plain text, and you had to type in commands to navigate to the different threads and read or reply with messages.

It is hard to imagine how can people start chatting in this Bulletin board system, although I really like the simplicity and detailed information that's being shown on this interface. However, chatting without username or any avatar seemed inconvenient, not easy to keep track of what is said and by by who.
