    1. How have your views on automation and programming changed (or been reinforced)?

Nope, because I spend alot of time on the internet I'm aware a lot of what we covered, in terms of automation and bo tusage.

    1. We hope with this you can be a more informed user of social media, better able to participate, protect yourself, and make it a valuable experience for you and others you interact with.

I think being more aware of your social media presence is important and this textbook helped with that. Concious thinking of what you do online can save hassle later

    1. Cable news has a much bigger effect on America’s polarization than social media, study finds

I've glossed over the link, and before reading this at all, I believe the reason cable has a larger impact on American society as a whole is because it targets any middle aged- older demographic. Social Media is still fairly young, so social media seems to affect the younger generation (30 and under is seems) which is only the bottom third of the American population

    1. Advertisements shown to users can go well for users when the users find products they are genuinely interested in, and for making the social media site free to use (since the site makes its money from ads).

Nowadays with how complex algorithms are, especially for the ad recommendations, it's become scary accurate as the algorithm gathers various information from your browsing data. It doesn't even have to be from the same website either, you could Google search about pregnancies for an essay and get baby products. Or if you have a home product that detects voice, they could listen to your conversations and feed you ads.

    1. The following tweet has a video of a soap dispenser that apparently was only designed to work for people with light-colored skin

With how the internet is nowadays, especially because we touched on the topic of trolling, I wonder how many people tried to make this a racial thing. This could of easily been just a simple oversight from the original designers but I could see the internet trying to extrapolate this into something bigger

    1. Some disabilities are visible disabilities that other people can notice by observing the disabled person (e.g., wearing glasses is an indication of a visual disability)

As someone who has a visual disability, people don't realize they have a visual disability until someone points it out to them. I thought my vision was fine until I finally got my eyes checked. Eyesight, hearing and a few others are harder to distinguish visually by others depending on the stages

    1. For example, if you send “private” messages on a work system, your boss might be able to read them.

This is more on the authoritative monitering side. Someone in that position who oversees a process should be granted the ability to see PM if they so choose. This prevents users going crazy and posting things that might harm the workplace

    1. What incentives do social media companies have to protect privacy?

This goes more into the reputation area where brands want to be known as trustworthy of users data. In return of this good perception and PR it attracts lots of users and hopefully it retains those users as well

    1. companies shouldn’t seek out

I feel like companies have seeked out as much relevant data as they could and whether or not that data breaches privacy concerns is up to the company to try to push. Some are shameless with no ethics and harvest as much data as possible, even without others consent. So regardless of what data I think shouldn't be seeked out , the truth might be that companies are already storing that data already.

    1. By looking at enough data in enough different ways, you can find evidence for pretty much any conclusion you want to.

I think this is why people say that statistics don't lie, but Staticons do. You can collect so much data and find so many trends that fit your narrative. It's really just confirmation bias for people to fit their narrative and paint whatever narrative fits their agenda

    1. Hors d’oeuvres”:

Although most trolling acts are harmless and is done without malicious intent, things that aren’t meant to be malicious can turn out to be a huge problem. Especially if it’s something that gains huge traction and can come with collateral damage.

    1. Do not argue with trolls - it means that they win

This couldn’t be more true in my opinion. In my opinion, I feel like trolling is done for attention and that’s their main goal, is to get noticed and have their antics exist. Ignoring the trolls doesn’t give them the attention and eventually they usually just stop

    1. Parasocial relationships are when a viewer or follower of a public figure (that is, a celebrity) feel like they know the public figure, and may even feel a sort of friendship with them, but the public figure doesn’t know the viewer at all.

Although this possibly has been a thing for a while, this idea of a parasocial relationship is something that has gotten popular during the recent times due to the number of "influencers" we have during this time. It leads to weird interactions and dynamics where people try to use that relationship for notoriety or push their ego

    1. Catfishing

Catfishing is almost always used for malicious intent. Wethers it for financial or social gain. The only example where catfishing was used for "good" was Chris Hansen catching predatory men looking for underage girls. Other stories of catfishing just go wrong

    1. Compilers

I'd like to say that something like the language or even the IDE is important. Some platforms are much easier and more elegant to use, which allows for easier programming and sometimes allows you to code in a more robust format.

    1. Balancing your needs and the needs of those you care for, and sometimes strangers too.

For this, I slightly disagree if we're talking about the internet. I think it's important that your individual and others are important to take care of. And taking extra steps to look out for yourself and others you care about is important, but in a internet setting, you are exposing yourself and there's a higher chance of you being taken advantage of. I'm not completely writing off not helping strangers online, just due to intelligently and on your own will
