    1. In most cases of normal-person canceling, neither standard is met. Instead, it’s mob justice and vigilante detective work

One example that exemplifies this the most was the TikTok in the link below about 'couch guy', a person who was stalked and harassed over his "lukewarm" reaction to the arrival of his long-distance girlfriend. He was essentially just a normal person who ended up in a viral TikTok and and then had his entire life investigated along with his body movements analyzed by random people on the internet. It seems a little scary that a large portion of public shaming just seems to occur by mob justice.

    2. troubles of others

I've always felt iffy about the idea of public shaming as a punishment. It seems to appeal more towards the immediate satisfaction of those who desire justice rather than being a fair punishment.

    1. What incentives do social media companies have to be careless with privacy

I think one strong motive that companies have to be careless about privacy is that there is often no real profit motive to protect the privacy of their users. Making sure their users information is secure, beyond the basics of making sure the information can't be hacked wouldn't really benefit the company in any way. Thus, they only have incentive to provide a bare minimum of security unless their main goal as a company is to provide strong security and privacy to their users like with password managers.

    1. might not be a way to share authentically to all those groups at the same time

The most common way that I've seen people get around this today is through making separate accounts or "stories" (Platforms like Instagram or Snapchat allow users to gear their story posts to specific audiences or users) to show different followers or friends specifically what they want to show them. This means that you can have a separate platform for your friends to see your posts, and also a public platform that is for family and strangers who view your profile.
