    1. Previously the boy had believed that the greatest testament to love was the guarantee—which he had had all his life—of total personal security.

the greatest aspect to love was not something tangible or materialistic

    2. But these later models were security risks, easily hacked, and the children of personnel were not meant to carry hackable devices. That’s how much my father loves me,

ore up to date, more modern devicce gives society more comfort and safty

    3. Bill Peek could think of more than a few Pathways boys of his acquaintance who wouldn’t hesitate to take her under the next boardwalk and put a finger inside her. And the rest. As the son of personnel, however, Bill Peek was held to a different standard.

Bill is more mature, and has better respect for women compared to the rest

    4. If you lived round here, Bill Peek, you’d’ve known Maud, if you understand me correctly. You would’ve known Maud right up to the Biblical and beyond. Terrible. But Aggie’s cut from quite different sod, thank goodness!”

Big difference between Maud and Aggie. Aggie is thought of highly but Maud well known in not such of a good reputation

    5. What a sodden dump it was! Just as everyone had warned him it would be. The only people left in England were the ones who couldn’t leave.

Not a place someone wants to be

    1. In the Great American Indian novel, when it is finally written, all of the white people will be Indians and all of the Indians will be ghosts.

Culture roll switch. Indians will live the life of the whites and the whites will live the life that the Indians did. Experience that they both went/ go threw.

    2. A white child and an Indian child, gender not important, should express deep affection in a childlike way.

In a culture that stresses gender rolls and differences in adults,in children it does not matter. Innocence is very important.

    3. Indians must see visions. White people can have the same visions if they are in love with Indians. If a white person loves an Indian then the white person is Indian by proximity. White people must carry an Indian deep inside themselves.

Cannot understand the Indian way of thinking or culture unless you are Indian or in love with an Indian. Is this because they believe they are better than everyone else, or just different than everyone else in a social or cultural sense?

    4. They should destroy the lives of any white women who choose to love them. All white women love Indian men. That is always the case.

Women can love a white man but white woman cannot love an Indian man? Does this resemble a dominance Indian men want or portray?

    5. brown hills, mountains, fertile valleys, dewy grass, wind, and clear water. If she is compared to murky water, however, then she must have a secret.

the women must be clean and pure, not dirty and questionable about what she has done.

    1. And then came, as if to my final and irrevocable overthrow, the spirit of PERVERSENESS. Of this spirit philosophy takes no account. Yet I am not more sure that my soul lives, than I am that perverseness is one of the primitive impulses of the human heart — one of the indivisible primary faculties, or sentiments, which give direction to the character of Man. Who has not, a hundred times, found himself committing a vile or a silly action, for no other reason than because he knows he should not? Have we not a perpetual inclination, in the teeth of our best judgment, to violate that which is Law, merely because we understand it to be such? This spirit of perverseness, I say, came to my final overthrow. It was this unfathomable longing of the soul to vex itself — to offer violence to its own nature — to do wrong for the wrong’s sake only — that urged me to continue and finally to consummate the injury I had inflicted upon the unoffending brute.

According to .merriam-webster.com "perverseness" means 'turned away from what is right or good'. Poe put this term in capital letters to make thee reader notice the importance of this word and how it relates to what he is trying to portray. This section of the text is explaining how people are boring with perverseness and because of this trait it drives the reason as to why people commit wrong doings even knowing its not what should be done.

    1. where the wonder-stricken belfry-man sat smoking in a state of dignity and dismay. But the little chap seized him at once by the nose; gave it a swing and a pull; clapped the big chapeau-de-bras upon his head; knocked it down over his eyes and mouth; and then, lifting up the big fiddle, beat him with it so long and so soundly, that what with the belfry-man being so fat, and the fiddle being so hollow, you would have sworn that there was a regiment of double-bass drummers all beating the devil’s tattoo up in the belfry of the steeple of Vondervotteimittiss.

Here we find reference to the title. From this point on the belfry man turns the Village into evil and changes the way things are seen and ran, letting the "devil" in.

    2. All people who hold sinecure offices are held in more or less respect, and as the belfry-man of Vondervotteimittiss has the most perfect of sinecures, he is the most perfectly respected of any man in the world.

According to merriam-webster.com the word "Sinecures" means 'an office or position that requires little or no work and that usually provides an income'. It seemed as if Poe used this term to describe how the people who hold jobs within the office dont actually do a lot of hard work, however everyone in the Village still seems to respect them for who they are and what little they do while having more than everyone else. Whereas compared to the man that works for the clock and doesn't do much either, people describe his job as "heretical" or odd.

    1. usurpations

According to vocabulary.com the word "usurpation" means 'taking someones power or property by force.' Poe seemed to use this word to describe how women have repeatedly been over powered by men without having any say or could stop it from happening.
