    1. I used to beSomebody in another skin (Another skin)

The metaphor “another skin” represents just how much the speaker has changed after this relationship and how he feels he is an entirely new person because of it. It also shows the long lastign effects this relationship has on him and how it may take him a long time for him to regain his former happiness that he had while dating her or before dating her.

    2. (I hope, I hope it's true)

The repetition of “I hope” perhaps shows the reluctance the speaker feels when saying it as a small part of him deep down wishes that she could only be happy with him. Hence, the speaker repeats it a few times as a way of convincing himself that he believes such a thing.

    3. Not the same without your head on my shouldersGrowing pains, but I don't wanna get older

“Not the same without your head on my shoulders” reveals that the writer is unable to sleep due to him missing someone dearly and being unable to rest and relax without his or her touch. The phrase “Not the same” shows how everything has seemingly changed since she has left and shows the contrast between the happiness of being with her and the sadness now of being alone.

The phrase “growing pains” and “don’t wanna get older” shows that as he grows older things seem to be more difficult, and thus he feels that he wants ‘stop growing’ as a way to put an end to all the new problems and challenges he faces as he grows up.

    4. I hopе you're getting evеrything you neededFound the puzzle piece and feel completedJust wanted you to know every reason

These two lines once again show the speakers maturity as he still cares for his ex and hoped that she gets what she wants in life.

“found the puzzle piece” and “getting everything you needed” represents that perhaps the speaker recognises that he was unable to provide the things that his ex wanted.

    5. Almost like we left it all on read

“left it all on read” refers to seeing a message but not replying it. Thus, “left it all on read” could represent the sudden splitting of ways between the two, and how they seemingly ignored and left behind all the memories and connections that they once had. This shows how he feels that the relationship seemed to end too abruptly and didn’t end the way he wanted it to.

Furthermore , this metaphor could also show that the author feels that he and his former partner ignored or didn’t attend to the problems that they were facing at the time, or did not communicate enough, and thus it seems they left all their issues together “on read”.

    6. Only time we speak (Only time we speak)Is in my dreams

This shows that the speaker still regularly thinks about his ex to the point that he or she appears in his dreams to talk to him, and perhaps it is only during those dreams that he feels calm and at peace again. It also tells me that the two of them no longer speak at all anymore, and maybe this is why the speaker feels an intense feeling of loneliness and pain, having to go from loving someone to total strangers. I can reflect on the theme of loneliness as the speaker misses his ex so much to the point that he dreams about her.

    7. Swear I couldn't sleep a wink last nightNo point in turning off the lights

The word intensity in the words “Swear I” shows the frustration that the speaker feels about not being able to sleep.

The phrase “no point” shows just how helpless the speaker feels trying to sleep that even turning off the lights doesn’t help him to sleep. It shows that whatever is keeping him up must be very distressing.

    8. Didn't know that the party was overAnd it's true that I need you here closer

The word “party” represents having a good time or having fun, and thus connotes the joy and happiness he felt while with her, and now that is over, he feels lost and is saddened by the end of the ‘party’.

“it’s true” shows an admission by the speaker that he wants his ex back. Instead of trying to deny it to help himself move on, he has moved on to the stage of acceptance where he acknowledges that although he still misses her and the connection they had, he knows that he can’t get her back and will have to live without her.

    9. Hope you really know that I mean thatI couldn't see the forest from the trees

The metaphor “couldn’t see the forest from the trees” refers to someone being too involved in a situation that they are unable to understand the situation. This shows that perhaps the speaker was too focused on other things during the relationship and thus missed out on the big picture.

Furthermore, the phrase “hope you really know” shows the speakers sincerity when acknowledging his mistake in the relationship. This once again shows the speakers maturity in his ability to take accountability and recognise that he too had a part to play in the end of the relationship.

    10. It kills me a little, that's okay'Cause I'd die for youYou know I'd still die for you

“It kills me a little” shows the speaker admitting that it bothers him how she seems perfectly fine without him. However the phrase “that’s okay” shows that he is willing to put aside that jealousy he feels towards her because of how much he still cares for her. This once again shows the authors maturity by putting his care for her over his jealousy.

The metaphor “die for you” emphasises just how deep his affections and love for her really goes, that despite breaking up, he is still willing to sacrifice anything for her, including his life if need by. This really makes me wonder how amazing their relationship together was to have evoked such strong feeling in him towards her, and why then if he felt this way did the relationship still end?

    11. I heard that you're happy without meAnd I hope it's true

“I hope it’s true” shows the authors maturity in still wishing the best for his ex. While some may feel resentful that their ex is doing so much better without them, he still hopes that she is happy in a relationship without him. Despite struggling to let go of her while she seems perfectly fine, he still hopes that she is living happily without him. This also the extent of the love that he had and still has for her that despite the pains and suffering he is going through because of her, he still wants her to be happy. I can reflect on the theme of care as the speaker is still very much concerned about his ex’s well being.

    12. Had to learn to let go

The word “learn” shows that it might be the speakers first time getting his heart broken and thus he doesn’t know how to move on from past relationships. This might explain his difficulty in getting over his ex and why he struggles so much with letting go.

    13. Burning photos

The word intensity in the phrase “Burning photos” shows the extreme means the speaker takes to try to get over this loss that he feels, even going as far as burning old photos he has of them together. I can reflect on the theme of moving on as the speaker tries his best to let go of the past by burning photos he has with her.

    14. Couple feelings never laid to rest

“laid to rest” once again shows the feeling of the relationship ending too quickly and not giving him the closure he might’ve wanted to help him move on, which might explain the pain and hurt he is feeling now.
