    1. The viral spectacle, as overwhelming and problematic and exploitative as it could be read, had also been effective.

the way it blew up wasnt great but also helped to solve hte case

    2. transformation of Gabby Petito’s disappearance from local crime to national obsession might have had a hand in helping the professionals investigating the case

wasnt supposed to gain as much traction as it did

    3. social media platforms became hubs for amateur journalism and detective work

this indicates how individuals can become so obsessive with a story that they want to feel involved and try to solve it themselves with little to no info or experience

    4. multiple news outlets have constructed their own timelines to help readers make sense of everything

many articles that i have read are timelines bc there were so many events that occurred in a short span of time

    5. Petito to disappear amid a road trip that was being shared in real time for her followers was a form of tragic irony too twisted to comprehend; for a while, people wondered if it was just some kind of sick stunt toward building narrative interest.

the story was so bizarre that it didnt even seem real

    6. there is a morbid degree of fascination assigned to such a horrific end for a photogenic couple known for posting about their seemingly picture-perfect travels.

people are intrigued because it is not the natural happily ever after ending. when things are normal and consistent, they are viewed as boring. the news profits off stories that are abnormal and extraordinary

    7. etito’s absence, made all the more glaring compared to her active presence online heretofore, provoked the couple’s standing audience (and then quickly, the rest of the internet) into a frenzy

her followers started to freak out which could have started the online presence of the case

    1. Brian is a person of interest in Gabby’s disappearance, he is not wanted for a crime,

many people get the term person of interest confused with being arrested. they wanted laundrie for more info and weren't automatically accusing him of the crime. readers could jump to conclusions that he did it

    2. I do not believe the situation escalated to the level of a domestic assault as much as that of a mental health crisis," the officer concluded in the report.

      desensitizes the situation

    3. he case has fueled national intrigue and a cross-country effort to solve the complex mystery.

so many people were obsessed with the story because of how sudden it was. the couple never demonstrated any issues to the public eye and seemed happy which is why it was super complex and appealing

    1. GabbyPetito had received more than 650 million views on TikTok alone, according to the Associated Press

the case in a way became an internet sensation/went viral which is odd how popular it was for something so tragic

    2. The case has captivated the public, with each new development becoming the focus of web sleuths on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Twitter.

more individuals beyond the police were investigating and putting in effort to find gabby but for their own entertainment

    1. describe Petito as White and about 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing around 110 pounds. She has blonde hair and blue eyes and several tattoos, including one on her finger and one on her forearm that reads "Let it be."

first physical description of gabby that i have seen - most articles i have read have spoken of her character which are things that we do not know for a fact. the physical aspects are ones that we can all notice and accept because of images.

    1. national sensation

very interesting to call it a sensation as those are usually associated with pleasure or enjoyable things. it's as if people were addicted to the story and kept wanting to hear more

    2. Social media mobilized to try to piece Gabby Petito's story together

another form of media that was used in solving the case. since she already had an online presence, some of her fans or other individuals in general could come together and start to help. also demonstrates how much people were invested in gabby and her case

    3. Brian sits in the comfort of his home.

implies that brian has no concern for gabby as he is not actively trying to find her - aligns with the descriptions of him being toxic towards her

    4. ome may not know that the couple had been living at the Laundrie family home for over a year before they set out on their trip together

a detail that isn't always disclosed but could be relevant

    1. Those who knew Petito and Laundrie said their relationship was so inconsistent that friends sometimes had trouble knowing if the couple were together,

not perfect and carefree like how it was portrayed online; very rocky

    1. Friends of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie have described the young couple's relationship as "toxic

very interesting that some of the people who know them best would describe them in this way while the social media images do not disclose these details in the slightest

    2. Friends of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie say the couple's relationship had "very high highs and very low lows."

friends and family come forward and share real life observations from the couple. for a while, there was only social media content to observe the nature of the couple. however, stories from their friends bring different behaviors to the surface

    1. Chris was asked to point out any favorite trails or spots that Brian may have used in the preserve. Although Chris and Roberta Laundrie provided this information verbally three weeks ago it is now thought that on-site assistance may be better

one may ponder why they didn't go with the fbi in the first place

    2. hours after local police say they would not keep searching for him in a nearby nature reserve, as they had been all weekend long

fbi steps in because they view it as a greater issue. local police seem to be throwing in the towel//giving up

    3. Petito family pens letter to Laundrie family, pleading with them: "Please, if you or your family has any decency left, please tell us where Gabby is located. Tell us if we are even looking in the right place."

      conflict between families

    4. Petito's Instagram page before her disappearance — which is also the last day she speaks to her mother directly over the phone.

two normal things of her life cease - big aspects of who she is

    5. woman was "punching him in the arm and/or face & trying to get into the van."

this detail isn't always portrayed in the media because it could make gabby look bad. it doesn't align with all the other details describing her death and character. this is one of the only articles i found that disclosed this detail of the story

    1. argument is not that white women deserve less attention, just that others deserve the same level of interest.

good to point out. petito deserved to gain as much coverage as she did but others in the same situation as her should be receiving the same

    2. Missing white woman syndrome

this is a prime example of whose story is not being told in the news. people become obsessed with stories like this when they are about white women. when it comes to people of color, they are not portrayed like this in the media if they are even talked about at all. they may be missing and we don't even know it because the media does not seem to care

    3. young woman’s life, and death, which has now become media fodder, with her final days being treated as entertainment

i find this quite interesting because when i was reading some of these stories i was thinking that the media was talking pretty casually about them especially when brian was still not found

    4. elements present to allow media outlets to create a strong narrative around Petito’s disappearance and death; the endless images and videos she posted to social media of her road trip, the drama of her previous interaction with the police — captured on body camera and showing a very distressed young woman obviously in crisis — the building of the tension with her disappearance, which also acted as a cliffhanger, before the tragic news of her death.

personally, i find that the positive images of petito from her social media mixed with the body cam footage from the police makes for an even more dramatic story because we see her portrayed in totally opposite states of mind

    5. name as a hashtag

her story wasn't just shared through the news but on many other platforms as well like podcasts and social media. this demonstrates how people search for their news in various places. they turn to things like social media instead of news outlets. the story was so big that it could branch out to other forms of media in a short span of time because literally everyone was talking about it

    1. mental/emotional health break” rather than domestic assault, with Petito telling police she suffered from anxiety.

invalidates her emotions in a way. shows how the issue wasn't super concerning at first because the police were believing the story the brian was telling even when gabby was clearly not okay. also, kind of brings in the stereotype of her being a "dumb blonde" because of how the situation was brushed under the rug

    2. video of a traffic stop of the couple that showed Petito weeping

very opposite of how she is portrayed in other images from her instagram and youtube accounts. this makes it especially concerning because she is not usually shown in that kind of emotional state

    3. Interest in the case has been heightened by the apparent disconnect between idealised images of the increasingly popular nomadic “van life” that the couple promoted on social media accounts and the more fractious reality that has emerged.

"nomadic" - carefree and nature-loving characteristics of gabby

    1. verge of tears and blaming herself the entire time – could be the signs of a victim being manipulated by her abuser

details like this really make the reader feel for gabby and emphasize her innocent and helpless characteristics which make one drawn to her and the story even more

    2. He didn't like hit me in the face," Petito says in the video. "He didn't like punch me in the face or anything." "Did he slap your face, or what?" the officer asks. "Well he like, grabbed me with his nail, and I guess that's why it looks, I definitely have a cut right here," she says, rubbing her cheek. "I can feel it, when I touch it it burns."

gabby was sticking up for brian despite his behavior. trying to cover up his character

    3. July 2021

the direct images of her social media posts give reader a glimpse into her life. it helps them to feel personally connected to her even when they do not know her. her posts are innocent and cute which is how we think of her because we do not know much else about her and her character

    1. bright, carefree posts on social media

posts are a reflection of her. it's how she decided to portray herself online which is how we feel like we know her and her character

    1. e North Port Police Department

it's very interesting because the police department are the main source of the story. there is not much from petito or laundrie's family/attorney/lawyer. it is mainly from the pov of the law enforcement. in the case of a missing person, this could be seen as a good thing since the police are involved but we aren't getting the full effects of the families' emotions and the impact they are having from the incident.

    1. 7% of American adults

it is not exactly clear if the number is representative of the entire population of Americans or just those who had COVID. it could be assumed that it's just those who had COVID but it is unclear

    1. Will, 53, issued an apology of his own

this article has a sort of structural bias as it only discusses what the smith family has to say about the matter and not what chris has to say which could lead the audience to create a bias that supports will's actions

Jada's side of the story - could create a bias toward what she is thinking. Many stories have featured what Chris and Will have to say but this is one of the few articles that actually discloses how Jada feels after this incident

    1. The sweet clip featured footage

this article seems to be more focused on her Youtube video than her son's name change - which is misleading in the title but helps to draw audience in

    2. Her announcement came just hours after Kylie premiered a new YouTube video dedicated to her newborn, titled To Our Son.

this seems to be a speculation that the announcement correlated with the Youtube video

    1. I very much desire to be divorced. I have asked Kanye to keep our divorce private, but he has not done so.

clear statement of what she wants and how the opposing side is not abiding by her wishes
