    1. In two studies, oneadditional preventive measure was selective oropharyngeal decontamination by using colistin, tobramycin, and nystatin, three times daily, with remarkable VAP reduction rates

This intervention showed a decrease in VAP. This data can help further education that this intervention can be used in other ICU units to help decrease their VAP rates. AS & ML

    2. Thestudied populations were critically ill ventilated patients admitted to general, medical, surgical, neurosurgical, trauma, and cardiovascular ICUs. Most of the included studieswere performed in general ICUs and fifteen of them were multicenter

By extending this study to multiple areas such as different ICU settings and multicenters, it allowed for data to be pulled from different facilities that were all using similar methods of treatment. AS & ML

    3. As VAP is oneof the most common preventable lung infections in critically ill intubated patients, it isimperative to determine the most efficient preventive measures for VAP reduction

VAP is preventable, yet one of the most common lung infections that occur for patients who are ventilated. As a nurse, it is important to give care to ventilated patients and decrease their chances of VAP. Some nursing interventions to help prevent this common lung infection can be to use the IHI bundle. AS & ML

    4. “IHI Ventilator Bundle”,

The IHI Ventilator bundle is used to prevent VAP. It consists of 4 key elements such as keeping the patients HOB elevated between 30 and 45 degrees, the use of daily sedation vacations to determine the readiness of the patient to be extubated, Peptic Ulcer and DVT prophylaxis, and lastly oral care using chlorhexidine. AS & ML

    5. The most common interventions monitored in the care bundles were sedation andweaning protocols, semi-recumbent positioning, oral and hand hygiene, peptic ulcer disease anddeep venus thrombosis prophylaxis, subglottic suctioning, and cuff pressure control. Head-of-bedelevation was implemented by almost all studies, followed by oral hygiene, which was the secondextensively used intervention

These interventions used can decrease the risk of catching VAP. By doing these interventions, it decreases the risk of mortality and can decrease time on the ventilator, length of stay, and cost of care. AS & ML
