The story of Babel is the best metaphor I have found for what happened to America in the 2010s, and for the fractured country we now inhabit. Something went terribly wrong, very suddenly. We are disoriented, unable to speak the same language or recognize the same truth. We are cut off from one another and from the past.
I don’t know the story of Babel, except for the basics, so if you do, I’d love to hear: Do the last 10 years ring true?

One of the toughest challenges for the English teacher is helping students collect, organize, and then find solid "quotes" or textual analysis for an essay assignment.

The real pedagogical innovation of collaborative annotation, however, is that students are empowered as knowledge producers in their own right, so most of my suggested classroom annotation practices revolve around a variety of student-centered annotation activities in which they are the ones posing the questions and teachers are co-learners in the reading process
I agree with this approach. When teachers just ask questions that students answer, that seems like the traditional "reading questions" approach to teaching — which can be a handout.
