The story of Babel is the best metaphor I have found for what happened to America in the 2010s, and for the fractured country we now inhabit. Something went terribly wrong, very suddenly. We are disoriented, unable to speak the same language or recognize the same truth. We are cut off from one another and from the past.
I don’t know the story of Babel, except for the basics, so if you do, I’d love to hear: Do the last 10 years ring true?

One of the toughest challenges for the English teacher is helping students collect, organize, and then find solid "quotes" or textual analysis for an essay assignment.

I agree with this approach. When teachers just ask questions that students answer, that seems like the traditional "reading questions" approach to teaching — which can be a handout.
