I believe topic sentences and references to rival positions to be some of the more important points made. Topic sentences are important because they give you insight into what each argument is going to be about. Its also important to notice when an author is referencing rival work, and to make sure that they don't stray to far from their original argument. I don't believe a different approach is needed when looking at different written works. I believe fiction or nonfiction has a point or argument that is being made within each work, and can be analyzed in the same way.
