The Water from the Spring, Upon my head I bring,
Carrying bucket of water on her head
The Water from the Spring, Upon my head I bring,
Carrying bucket of water on her head
Which makes me pale and wan
She was pale because of exhaustion
Both at Plow and at Cart, In the Land of Virginny, O: Billats from the Wood, Upon my back they load,
Most of the works she had to do were heavy, such as drawing plow, pulling cart, cutting down woods, and carry them on her back.
Billats from the Wood,
quartering the woods.
I have play’d my part, Both at Plow and at Cart,
Had to work both on field (with plow), and off field (with cart).
So soon as it is day, To work I must away, In the Land of Virginny, O; Then my Dame she knocks With her Tinder-box,
She had to go to work very early when the sun had not yet appeared.
Then the Spider she Daily waits on me, In the Land of Virginny, O; Round about my Bed,
Poor and dirty living conditions
Instead of Beds of Ease,
Could not sleep at ease
The Cloaths that I brought in, They are worn very thin,
Poorly made and cheap clothes she wore
When she sits at Meat, Then I have none to eat,
Her master had good foods to eat, she had none.
When my Dame says, Go, Then I must do so,
Could not disobey
What I have suffered there, When that I was weary,
Was suffered and very weary
Give ear unto a Maid, That lately was betray’d,
Got tricked and sent to Virginia
