    1. There is no such thing as an “LGBTQ Catholic,” or a “transgender Catholic,” or a “heterosexual Catholic,” as if our sexual appetites defined who we are;

      I think this statement is interesting. I believe that everyone was made in God's image and should be viewed as a child of God. While it can be hard for me to wrap my head around the idea of there being more than two genders, I cannot make a valid argument because it is not something I experience. Therefore, it is not my place to state if it is wright or wrong. I think people who identify as Catholic should just be classified as that and not a certain type of Catholic.

    2. This binary classification of sexual identity would impact nearly 1.4 million Americans who do not identify with the gender indicated on their birth certificates, prompting transgender and gender-queer persons (and those who stand with them) to characterize the proposal as transphobic and anti-LGBTQ+.

      I can see how this could be viewed as transphobic and anti-LGBTQ. With any community of that size, acts that get rid of something they identify with no matter what the scenario will be viewed as attacking in some way. That is especially true with this deep topic.

    1. Reciprocate the gift.

      This line is very important as it is something that is often overlooked. While it may be passed over, it is one of the best ways to better yourself and the world around you. By paying it back, you can bring joy to others and yourself.

    2. we animals are destined by biology to be utterly dependent upon the lives of others, the inherently generous, more-than-human persons with whom we share the planet.

      I think this line is very important. It brings up the point that we cannot do everything on our own. It is vital that we work with others so that we can succeed. This goes far deeper than just a biological statement.

    1. So that your punishment will indeedbe infinite. Oh, who can express what the state of a soul in such circumstances is!All that we can possibly say about it, gives but a very feeble, faint representationof it; it is inexpressible and inconceivable: For “who knows the power of God’sanger?

      These few lines along with the rest of the passage serve as a harsh awakening. I feel like many people do not usually think about they might harm God's creation and this passage tells us what the consequences might be.

    2. We find it easy to tread on and crush a worm that we see crawling on the earth; soit is easy for us to cut or singe a slender thread that any thing hangs by; thus easyis it for God when he pleases to cast his enemies down to hell.

      This comparison is an effective way to start the passage but also makes complete sense. While we have much power over a worm on the ground, God has much power over us. He can easily make decisions about our fate just as we can with a worm.

    1. To name the world as gift is to feel one’s membership in the web of reciprocity.

      I think this line is very interesting. I have heard many times that the world is a gift but never thought much of it. When the idea of reciprocity is brought in, it makes you think of what can do in return for the world. Or in other words, how you can pay it back.

    2. Gratitude and reciprocity are the currency of a gift economy, and they have the remarkable property of multiplying with every exchange, their energy concentrating as they pass from hand to hand, a truly renewable resource.

      I like how the author puts this. When you think of an economy, you might think of buyers and sellers. It is similar in this "gift economy" sense. The buyers could be referred to as the gratitude while the sellers could be thought of as the reciprocity.

    1. And the way of death is this: First of all it is evil and accursed: murders, adultery, lust, fornication, thefts, idolatries, magic arts, witchcrafts, rape, false witness, hypocrisy, double-heartedness, deceit, haughtiness, depravity, self-will, greediness, filthy talking, jealousy, over-confidence, loftiness, boastfulness; persecutors of the good, hating truth, loving a lie, not knowing a reward for righteousness, not cleaving to good nor to righteous judgment, watching not for that which is good, but for that which is evil; from whom meekness and endurance are far, loving vanities, pursuing revenge, not pitying a poor man, not laboring for the afflicted, not knowing Him Who made them, murderers of children, destroyers of the handiwork of God, turning away from him who is in want, afflicting him who is distressed, advocates of the rich, lawless judges of the poor, utter sinners. Be delivered, children, from all these.

      This passage is both important and interesting. It states many of the things that one is to avoid if they are trying to live a "holy" or non-sinful life. While no one is without sin, they can always put effort into avoiding these actions.

    2. The way of life, then, is this: First, you shall love God who made you;

      This short line is very important as it is one of if not the most important idea in Christianity. Anybody who has even a little knowledge when it comes to Christian faith could tell you that there is one God in this practice. People who are theologists of this religion will say that God is the ultimate creator.

    1. Turning to the relationship between religion and science, there has been a definite, though still fragile and provisional, movement towards a new and more nuanced interchange.

      This passage is important as it is a step in the right direction to all the separation that is in the world. One of the biggest debates is Religion vs. Science and this shows that maybe the two don't have to be completely separate. If this debate could be settled, it could be a spark for other debates like this one to be looked at in a different, better way.

    2. Even within the academic community, the separation between truth and values persists, and the isolation of their several cultures – scientific, humanistic and religious – makes common discourse difficult if not at times impossible.

      I very much agree with this passage. It seems that in todays world, there is more separation than ever. When it comes to truths, everyone has different thoughts but the biggest setback in my opinion is values. Everyone believes that their values are the right ones which leads to a lot of conflict.

    1. You get to consciously decide what has meaning and what doesn’t. You get to decide what to worship.

      I think the part where the author talks about how we get to decide what has meaning to us is important. It is important because it is what makes us unique. By choosing what is important and has meaning, we can accomplish such a wide variety of things because there is so much passion for so many different things.

    2. To be just a little less arrogant. To have just a little critical awareness about myself and my certainties.

      I believe that in today's world people are often caught up with arrogance. Rarely do people take time to step back and try to think about things in someone else's point of view. everything is about themselves. By looking at situations in different pov's, we can really allow ourselves to think.
