    1. Do you not see what a solemn condition these are in? when your hands are loose the pesons are afflicted.

I observe that this person is trying to guilt trip by Nurse making her look at the others conditions

I interpret this as this person blaming Rebecca for other peoples problems or conditions. They said " when your hands are loose the pesons are afflicted" basically saying Nurse is the cause of their troubles. Maybe in doing so they hope Nurse will confess

Causalilty- cause and effect. (Cause Nurse being free) ( Effect- other people suffer because of her )

    2. It is very awfull to all to see these agonies & you an old Professor thus charged with contracting with the Devil by the effects of it

I observed that she used to be a teacher

I interpret this as women having different roles in society not just housewives

This shows that back then something we see now everyday was not as common. Being a teacher as a woman was probably much more common than being a professor. Change over time- woman now have more equal job opportunities

    3. The Lord knows I have not hurt them: I am an innocent person

I observe that nurse is claiming her innocence

I interpret this as Nurse using her belief to prove she is not guilty saying God knows her heart.

This shows that she has nothing to prove her innocence with besides her religion. Saying the Lord knows her heart to show she is a good person and that she has morals living up to her beliefs. The year of the text says 1962, during this time being Protestant was very common with their belief in God. Context-helps me show why religion is important in the text and in her quote

    4. Nurse held her neck on one sid & Eliz: Hubbard (one of the sufferers) had her neck set in that posture whereupon another Patient Abigail Williams cryed out set up Goody Nurses head the maid’s neck will be broke & when some set up Nurses head Aaron wey observed that Betty Hubbards was immediately righted

I am observing that Nurse turned her neck to the side and Hubbard copied her by turning her neck too

I interpret this as Abigail and Hubbard trying to prove Nurse is indeed a witch by implying she was " controlling" Hubbards movement causing her neck to fall in the same position as Nurses because Abigail yelled out " Set up Goody Nurses head the maid's neck will be broke". And Hubbard changing positions when Nurse did too.

This shows how unjust the law system was during the Salem Witch trials. Anything could prove you were a witch ( example- Nurse "controlling her neck".) Back then the thought of " innocent till proven guilty" was not a thing if you were accused you were a witch. Change over time- the law system is now better less people being falsely accused.
