      WHY PURSUE A MINOR IN COACHING?

      The Emporia State Coaching Minor prepares coaches to influence in multi-dimensions- physical, psychological, and positive character. There is a strong focus on the number one reason athletes participate- to have fun!

    2. Is the program accredited?Emporia State University’s coaching education minor was accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Coaching Education (NCACE) in 2012 and is valid through 2019. ESU is one of only 10 higher education institutions that are NCACE accredited.

      LEADER IN COACHING EDUCATION WITH NATIONALLY ACCREDITED PROGRAM

      Emporia State is one of only 12 universities in the nation to have its coaching minor program accredited by the National Committee for Accreditation of Coaching Education.

      • Will graduate from a Kansas High School
      • Current resident of the United States of America
      • Grade point average of 2.5 or above

      PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES AT ESU While at ESU, there are a number of ways to gain coaching experience. Serve as an assistant coach with a team for the entire season, take advantage of paid opportunities to serve as a head or assistant coach with area teams and even go to schools to present mental skills and drills to athletes, coaches and often entire student bodies.

What level of coaching will I be prepared for through this minor?The coaching minor prepares the student coach to work with athletes in youth, junior or senior high school, college, club, and community recreational sports settings. Students who complete the coaching minor obtain the American Sport Education Program certification. This certification allows the individual to coach in schools without a teaching certificate.

      WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH A COACHING MINOR?

      • You will be prepared to work with athletes in youth organizations, junior or senior high schools,college and community recreational sport settings.
      • Students who complete the coaching minor obtain the American Sport Education Program certification. This certification allows you to coach in schools without a teaching certificate.
      • Work in recreation,sports management or as a personal trainer.

      **PREPARED COACHES MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE** Think back to a coach who positively impacted your life. Think of how you were inspired by that coach and the difference he or she made in your life. You have the opportunity to be that same type of mentor with a coaching minor. Work with youth playing the sport you love. The ESU coaching minor prepares coaches to be the positive influence that you had- or still have!

      The coaching education minor requires a total of 18 credit hours: 12 required courses and two additional three credit hour courses.. If you choose this minor, you should consult with the chair of the department for the assignment of an advisor no later than the second semester of the your sophomore year. The advisor will work with the student to develop a contract for this minor program.
