I thought the interaction that just happened was very fascinating, mostly because of the story that had happened earlier. With that power dynamic, I could get a grasp as to how tense the conversation was. I think this conversation would have been equally as tense, even without the knives being drawn, or almost drawn in M'Closky's case.

    2. Scud. Thankye. I’m from fair to middlin’, like a bamboo cane, much the same all the year round. Zoe. No; like a sugar cane; so dry outside, one would never think there was so much sweetness within.

I thought this was a very interesting analogy. Coming from someone who has bamboo in their backyard, one thing that some people don't know about bamboo is that it's actually an invasive plant. If there's a stalk of it planted, unless it's contained in a pot it grows underground and spreads. After following the story told just a few lines ago, I sort of made the connection with Salem Scudder and while he may have been hired by the judge, some of his actions sort of "sprouted up" without any warning, like the sugar-mills.
