    4. Mud on the guts  under a loaded wagon—

This stanza paints a picture of the environment that they are in. I picture a dirty, muddy area filled with diseases and dead bodies.

    1. when the tip of her father’s finger was pressed against that of her husband, on which the butterfly still rested, the insect drooped its wings and seemed on the point of falling to the floor. Even the bright spots of gold upon its wings and body, unless her eyes deceived her, grew dim, and the glowing purple took a dusky hue, and the starry lustre that gleamed around the blacksmith’s hand became faint and vanished.

The butterfly only feeds off of positive energy. The father is a mean, old, negative man. That is the reason why the butterfly, which was full of life almost died in the arms of a negative person. However, when it touched an innocent, pure, and happy person it recovered. This shows that having negative people around you can negatively affect your life. If you have positive people around you, then you can stay positive.

    2. Owen Warland might have told them that this butterfly, this plaything, this bridal gift of a poor watchmaker to a blacksmith’s wife, was, in truth, a gem of art that a monarch would have purchased with honors and abundant wealth, and have treasured it among the jewels of his kingdom as the most unique and wondrous of them all. But the artist smiled and kept the secret to himself .

I completely agree with this quote. If Owen's invention was found in a fancy store, Robert might have bought it for Annie and treated it like treasure. However, since they know that it was made by the poor watchmaker it doesn't seem to be worth as much to them.

    3. he had persisted in connecting all his dreams of artistical success with Annie’s image; she was the visible shape in which the spiritual power that he worshipped, and on whose altar he hoped to lay a not unworthy offering, was made manifest to him. Of course he had deceived himself; there were no such attributes in Annie Hovenden as his imagination had endowed her with.

This quote represents when people paint a picture of others in their mind that doesn't represent the person in reality. He holds Annie on a high pedestal but she is not as amazing as he makes her out to be. I believe he did this to make himself feel less alone.

    4. don’t you know that my daughter Annie is engaged to Robert Danforth?

Its sad that the only person who he feels strongly for is with another man. I feel like the father wanted her to marry Robert because he has a good job.

    5. When it took flight his eyes followed the winged vision, as if its airy track would show the path to heaven.

I have noticed a constant theme of butterflies. What does the butterfly represent?

    1. you have rejected the best the earth could offer. Aylmer, dearest Aylmer, I am dying!”

This is what happens when you decide to turn your wife into a science experiment.

    2. “let the attempt be made at whatever risk. Danger is nothing to me; for life, while this hateful mark makes me the object of your horror and disgust, — life is a burden which I would fling down with joy. Either remove this dreadful hand, or take my wretched life!

Shes no better than her husband. Shes basically saying she doesn't mind loosing her life to please her husband over a birthmark that can be covered with two fingers.

    3. for the sake of giving himself peace.

Did he ever stop to think about how Georgina feels? She has been living with this birthmark all her life. He is only making her feel worse about it.

    4. attempting an operation for the removal of the birthmark;

He will stop at nothing to get rid of her ONE flaw. The one thing that makes her unique

    5. Had she been less beautiful, — if Envy’s self could have found aught else to sneer at, — he might have felt his affection heightened by the prettiness of this mimic hand,

Aylmer is saying if his wife was uglier, then he wouldn't have a problem with the birthmark and he might even find it appealing. However, since everything else is perfect the one flaw that she possesses is intolerable. Again, Why did it take him so long to realize that her birthmark bothered him this much.

    6. Masculine observers, if the birthmark did not heighten their admiration, contented themselves with wishing it away, that the world might possess one living specimen of ideal loveliness without the semblance of a flaw. After his marriage, — for he thought little or nothing of the matter before, — Aylmer discovered that this was the case with himself.

Why cant Aylmer just accept the fact that everyone is not perfect. There is going to be something that you dont like about everyone including your significant other.

    7. you came so nearly perfect from the hand of Nature that this slightest possible defect, which we hesitate whether to term a defect or a beauty, shocks me, as being the visible mark of earthly imperfection.”

Why is it that her birthmark did not bother him until after they got married? Also, how could you talk to your wife this way.
