    1. My painting isnot Art; it’s an Is.” “It’s not a pic-ture of a thing; it’s the thing itself.”“Tt doesn’t reproduce Nature; it isNature.” “The painter doesn’t think;he knows.” Etc. ete. “Art is not,not not not not...”

Ok but who exactly is saying these things

    2. Philosophy is not popular amongAmerican painters.

But in the chapter about Rothko the author mentioned Jung and Freud (ik he was a psychoanalyst but lets be honest rn) and I think also Kierkegaard, so is this even true?

    3. Otherwise the “act” gets to be “making a painting” atsufficient speed to meet an exhibition date.

So are commissions not okay? Does the "act" of "making a painting" cheapen the result, or make it less poignant? Students have to make art on a schedule, does that schedule mean that they aren't "acting"?

    4. indi-vidual artists.

Heightened interest in personal identity/perception rather than universal definitions. Can't be a school because the art that's being made is inherently subjective

    1. His scepter shows the force of temporal power, 2106  The attribute to awe and majesty 2107  Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings; 2108  But mercy is above this sceptered sway. 2109 200 It is enthronèd in the hearts of kings; 2110  It is an attribute to God Himself; 2111  And earthly power doth then show likest God’s 2112  When mercy seasons justice.

Basically, the physical, tangible power of kings is great, it strikes fear in the hearts of men, BUT. Mercy is akin to godliness, and something that should not be used as leverage.

    1. a belief that the sexes are cul-turally, and not just biologically, formed; a beliefthat women were a social group shaped to fit malenotions about a defective sex

      Idea one that I like

    1. eradicating sexist oppression is important because it is the primarycontradiction, the basis of all other oppressions

      uhmmmm idk about this.

I don't like this not only because of the like. obviously harmful structuring of oppressional hierarchy, but also because binary gender as most of the world understands it stems FROM white, european, colonial places. Indigenous people recognize more than two binary genders, as do a whole slew of other places, so believing that BINARY sexism was around before any other form of oppression is not only incredibly offensive but like, objectively not true? Like in any way?

    2. All such questions are rooted in competitive eitherIor thinking, the belief that the self is formed in opposition to an other.

I have trouble removing this sort of vision from identity and otherwise. What am I if I am simply not something else?

    3. It does not engage us in theeither/ or dualistic thinking that is the central ideological component of all systems of domination in Western society

Leaving room for discourse rather than a statement of "truth"

    4. hese women do not see that it undermines feminist movement to project the assumption that "feminist" is but another pre-packaged role women can now selectas they search for identity

      feminist barbie

    5. we must now encourage women to develop a keen, comprehensive understanding ofwomen's political reality

But like, idk i get to this point and i'm like yes, but what about all the women that are not educated enough to like, interact with this level of rhetoric? And those that don't want to be seen as feminists aren't going to dive into feminist literature, whether they understand it or not...

    6. Woman, being less aggressive, is then either the lesshuman of the two and doomed to subjugation, or else shemust get more power-hungry herself and try to dominateman. Liberation for both is not feasible

    1. Music is universal, a significant feature of everyknown culture, and a major investment of resources, and yet itdoes not serve an obvious, uncontroversial function for those whocreate it or listen to it

I know this is like, a main argument of every scientist who studies music but I just like, don't think it's true. I think that A: more people need to accept that pleasure is a function, as much a need for humanity to thrive as food is. Also music is a form of communication, so...
