    1. we could pass into safety.

This is what Mueller was trying to get at the whole time. The idea that we are so caught up in the things around us, and what people have built for our country that we are unable to appreciate what brings yourself solitude and happiness. We thought setting up everyone around us before we die is the thing to do, but when you are laying on your deathbed, no one is passing with you into the next world besides yourself. And because of this, the lack of appreciation for solitude, our society as a whole is growing lonelier by the minute!

    2. we gave the country a heart, the storm an eye, the cave a mouth

All of these things being mentioned are things for others. Our whole life, society goes through trying to build up something for the person in-front of them, or around us. The storm had an eye, the country a heart, all because everyone was focused on these things we have created. The reality is not that we leave this world with our country, or our friends. But, we leave this world alone.

    3. Even what was beyond us was recast in our image

I think this can apply to a lot of things around the world. Many times, we are told things are a certain way or type because we heard from someone else, or some thing. But, this whole time we have been feeding knowledge and things into our brain that we are not even supposed to comprehend. People created false realities to hide the fact that they didn't know what was truly going on.

    4. bells so we could listen

Bells being mentioned is also very interesting, as if you think about it, they play music and chimes so silence is not heard. The reason all of these things are being pointed out is to try and show the emphasis our world has put on not being alone, or quiet, or with yourself.

    5. we loved graceful profiles the pitcher received a lip,

Mueller is pointing out that we, society, has fallen in love with these images we have created for people or items around the world. Each thing must have a counterpart, or a partner it goes with. Nothing can ever just be alone. The pitcher needs a lip, or the bottle needs a long neck. These are all things that incorporate the opposite of solitude.

    6. and hung tongues inside bells so we could listen to their emotional language,

Mueller is using human body parts (tongue) to personify these things that we have created, showing that we have put more of ourselves into these things surrounding us than into our soul itself, and that is why we as a whole society are inherently growing: "lonelier and lonelier".

    7. We fitted our shoes with tongues as smooth as our own

This line sticks out to me greatly. This simile points out what we have created as a whole, taking parts of us as a human and giving it to these "things" we live among like Mueller stated. We are catering to the things around us, making them as valuable as our own skin and body, when in reality self worth is far more valuable.

    8. which will never suffer fatigue.

These items all have something that is supporting it. The table will never be alone without the legs, or the clock without the face, meaning that these things we live amongst everyday we felt needed this counterpart that society has created. These things will always be there for each other, and that's why fatigue is not something that is possible.

    9. the chair a back, the table four stout legs

These things being mentioned are all items with a counterpart, or something that supports them. A char is not a chair without a back, or a table without legs. These are all things that depend on each other, not on itself.

    10. What happened is, we grew lonely living among the things,

The poem immediately begins with a somber tone, as we are told we, society, grow lonely living amongst the things we have created. What are these things though? And why are they creating the loneliness we see present?

    11. so we could pass into safety.

Everything was set up and made for each other because of the fact that we all leave the world alone. This poem points out that because of what society has created around us, and the standards that are current, we have all become super lonely because we are living amongst these things we have created as a whole, and not amongst ourselves.

    12. Even what was beyond us was recast in our image

This is highlighting that what we thought we knew about the things around us are sometimes false realities, and rather images we recast in our head.

    13. t

Each stanza does not have a certain layout or formation to it, and rather seems to be unintentional with the whole process. It goes 6, 5, 3, then 6 lines in each stanza.

    14. and because we loved graceful profiles

Pointing out that society liked the look of things being paired well together, never something by itself, or alone. The pitcher received a lip, a classic imagery of a baseball player during the olden days.

    15. hung tongues inside bells so we could listen to their emotional language

There seems to be more emphasis on us getting caught up in being involved with something else, some thing, and a bell is the perfect example of us humans trying to listen to something else, rather than the act of being alone or without any thing. A bell does the exact opposite of quietness, as it serves a signal for help or assistance from one other, rejecting the idea of solitude.

    16. We fitted our shoes with tongues as smooth as our own

There is a simile, as she is referring to the material of the shoe as precious and valuable as us, being put onto something else like a shoe, or another "thing" she referred to in the beginning of the poem.

    17. the table four stout legs

The things that she is mentioning, chair a back, clock a face, or a table with four stout legs, which are all things that are necessities for the thing to exist. She then mentions in the next line that these things will never suffer fatigue, as they have dependable parts to each other.

    18. What happened is, we grew lonely

Immediately, there is a tone of sorrow as the author mentions we (society) grow lonely dependent on the things we have built for others.

    1. Look! I’ve been where you most fear to be

This has a lot of context to it for sure. Here we have the charter as a child talking to himself, as he realizes that all it took to find his inner self was to experience loneliness and solitude, and realized that his whole life he was scared to experience the idea of being alone, until he realizes its not that bad at all. As soon as he experienced the act of solitude, he was able to see all along that it was his fear that drove him away from his happiness.

    2. the barking of a dog, autumnal burnings, far calls, close calls

These are very specific scenes, autumnal burnings, things that he had witnessed before

    3. t

First 4 stanzas are 3 lines, then it jumps to 4 lines, then the last 2 lines are separate stanzas. This was to create emphasis on the last line, or scene.

    4. all voices and scenes come back

Come back? Are these voices and scenes he speaks of him as a child, where he was scared to explore who he was and what solitude and happiness with ones self truly is

    5. part to see that widening of the world

Boom. Here we are able to depict that this solitude he is referring to is opening him up to the world like he's never been before. Sometimes the feeling of self wonder and self worth all comes at question when one is alone, and you can either dwell or mope with the situation.

    6. part out of longing, part daring my self,

Is what we long what we truly are scared to do and act on? Does this cause a daring situation for the character which he is thankful for?

    7. fearfully

We are introduced to the characters fear, as the poem seems to now move into a place of uncomfort for the character as these "uncertainties" are introduced. So does this mean when he is alone with the wind in nature, his inner uncertainties about choices or life in general begin to haunt him, causing him to seek joy in Solitude itself.

    8. sings loudest surrounding me

What is this singing we are introduced too? He opens up with this scene of nature, wind whistling throughout the trees, so we know he is referring to the world around him.

    1. Our marriage bed, and marriage temple

Donne incorporates the use of religion and spirituality in presence of a place of sexuality, combining the two showing it is possible to coexist

    2. before it woo,

Like Ryan said, the flea and its character traits in a sexual manner are being used to signify what a healthy love life (sex) should be. If a flea is able to enjoy ones blood without lifetime connection, the human should not need marry before love is shown

    3. nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead,

Donne reinforces his analogy to show that the transferring of blood, or fluid during sex, will not be seen in a negative manner.

    4. And in this flea our two bloods

The flea is being used to signify the transferring of love, which is known to be as blood itself. The choice of the flea is strategic in what Donne wants to notify
