    1. He then shot until he ran out of bullets

This is consistent across all stories.

    2. Prather was shot at but not hit

Okay so he was not injured at all. Some of the other narratives made it seem like a 4th guy was shot, but some stories have no mention of him at all.

    3. the intersection of April Drive and Grier Street just off York Highway

      Exact location! What a detail!

    1. The North Carolina shooting follows a string of similar incidents where seemingly ordinary mistakes have led to serious consequences involving firearms.

Briefly mentions the other similar shootings.

    2. in his own front yard

In his own yard?? I thought one story said he ran down the street to defend his children.

    3. and son

      and son BAHAHAHAHHA

    4. an additional neighbor

A 4th person was injured???? What??

    1. Singletary’s grandmother,

Seeking out another source??? that's crazyyyy. But it's good information to have. The fact that not only the ball might have rolled into his garden but a neighbor is said to have threatened him back?? that turns into a whole new narrative that includes an aspect of self-defense.

    2. But a basketball rolled into Robert Louis Singletary’s yard. He confronted other neighbors about it, and it seemed like a normal argument, White said. Then Singletary walked into his house to get a revolver.

Here's the confrontation narrative again from the point of view of Mr. White.

    3. The violence was the latest in a string of recent shootings sparked by seemingly trivial circumstance

Another mention of this, but doesn't seem to be going into detail about the others.

    4. after children went to retrieve a basketball from his yard.

Is this artivcle gonna mention the confrontation and the man running back into his house?

    1. “I just went more left to block her and as soon as I -- thank the good Lord above -- I was able to get in front of my baby,” White told WSOC. “I’ll take a million of them for my babies.”

This is a quote I haven't seen yet. This is another instance of tugging at the heartstrings of readers. Pathos pathos pathos!

    2. The shooting is the latest in a series of seemingly normal missteps that have led to serious consequences involving guns

Another story where they highlight similar instances of shootings.

    3. and a neighbor

so it's not her mom, but a neighbor instead. that is very different from the other narratives. Perhaps since the mom has a different last name they assume she's not related?

    1. ossession of a firearm by a felon. Mr Singletary remains at large

The tweet below does not accurately represent the event which I've come to understand. First, they misquoted Kinsley. Then, they say that Kinsley's parents were "hit by shots too" which subconsciously makes one think right off the bat that she was shot directly.

    2. ‘I’m going to kill you,’” she said.

      This important detail again.

    3. Why did you shoot my daddy and me? Why did you shoot a kid’s dad?”

This quote is definitely used to help tug at the heart-strings. Can you imagine a little girl asking this? It just makes you wanna break down and cry. Very pathos of them to include it.

    4. his garden,

his garden?? that was left out. If a ball rolls into my yard I wouldn't care but it's a different story if it rolls into my garden and crushes some flowers or even a home-grown vegetable or fruit.

    1. For his part, he was angry when he learned that Singletary had been released from jail on an unsecured bond after an alleged assault in December, when he was accused of beating his girlfriend with a miniature sledgehammer and holding her captive.

This is an interesting detail to include. Kind of jabs at the judicial system, no?

    2. White arrived home from Carolinas Medical Center at around 8 p.m. Saturday evening. On Monday morning, every movement, even deep breaths, brought him pain.

This article does not mention how his wife was shot at all. It is very Jaime-centric instead of Kinsley-centric.

    3. Crowders Mountain man says he was shot shielding his daughter

Overall a more story-oriented article. Covers a lot of the details of the event rather than the repercussions or effects.

    4. The shrapnel lodged in Kinsley's cheek.

I understand this part now. This was not evident in some of the other articles that I read.

    5. Singetary walked into his home and came out with a gun, according to White.

I did not know it was a confrontation. Some articles excluded this, simple stating that he had shot them after the ball rolled into the yard and when--I assume--they were attempting to retrieve it.

    6. bullet fragments

Okay so was she shot or was it just fragments from her dad being shot?

    7. "I just ran towards my daughter," White said. "That's when he shot me."

This article actually includes a quote from one of the victims.

    1. He’s been charged with four counts of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, Gaston County police said.

This article includes the charges. Some of the other articles don't.

    2. “He looked at my husband and my daughter and told them, ‘I’m going to kill you,’” Hilderbrand told the station

This is a detail left out by the first two articles. It's a pretty loud detail to forget, a declaration to kill someone is a pretty big deal.

    3. “We don’t even know the man,” Kinsley told the station, adding, “Why did you shoot my daddy and me? Why did you shoot a kid’s dad?”

Quote from Kinsley instead of her dad or mom.

    1. Blake Walsh, 19, said of Gillis, his girlfriend,

      Boyfriend gets to talk. Family?

    2. six,

They made sure to include her age in the headline

    3. recent spate of shootings across the US

This also holds the value of conflict. Gun control is a major conflict in the United States right now, so anything related to a shooting is news-worthy.

    4. The shooting occurred on Wednesday

      Timeliness, this just happened.

    5. six-year-old

This is definitely a topic of unusualness and human interest. Although I find it just as tragic and gruesome when an adult is shot by another person, it becomes an even bigger deal to the public and the media when a very young child is shot.

    6. her parents

I had thought her mother had not been shot based on the stories and information on social media. This could be something worth noting for information left out. Perhaps the mother was in better condition than the other two so she was deemed as a less important detail. Everyone likes to report on the more severe stuff as it is more interesting to readers.

    7. Kinsley and her parents’ shootings came six days after Ralph Yarl, a Black teenager, was shot in a separate and unrelated incident by a white man after ringing the man’s doorbell in Kansas City, Missouri.

What is really interesting to me about this story is that it talks about three other similar shootings that have happened recently. Perhaps this is to emphasize the nation-wide issue of gun control.

    1. Overall

This poll is very valuable as the concept of the in-person, long work days is become less and less popular. The only issue I can see in this is that getting a sample via telephone can pose its challenges.

    2. a random sample of 1,668 Washington-area residents reached on cellphones and landlines.

As we discussed in class, surveys over the phone are great ways to get random samples. However, as we discussed, it can be hard to reach people nowadays since a lot of people don't pick up their phones for random numbers.

    3. T

What's also very handy about this poll is that they display the question right with the poll, rather than somewhere else which is less obvious to the average viewer.

    4. two-thirds of those with remote-capable jobs say they would prefer to work from home a majority of the time, including 38 percent who say they would like to work from home all of the time.

This, along with the caption right above the poll accurately represents the data in the table. 29+38 is 67, which is roughly two-thirds, as the article states.

    1. Colts owner Jim Irsay even said Monday he doesn't see money as a problem, but lamented the draft-pick compensation for potentially acquiring Lamar

Money is involved in this operation, which would make sense if the owner of the Indianapolis Colts is sad about how much money he may have to spend. (The purpose of a business is to make profit).

    2. Lamar's tag allows other NFL teams to step in and put together an offer sheet.

This reminds me of farm business behavior, when farmers buy and sell cattle, pigs, etc. based on whether or not they will serve them well in their business.

    3. trading

I associate this word with business. Are sports just a business through which people can make money??

    1. takeover

      hostile??

    2. honky-tonk-like

there's a lot of "something-like" adjectives being used in this article, it's a little repetitive lol.

    3. retaliated

      another war-based term

    4. snoozing

      indicates laziness

    5. fight

another word to describe the confrontation as a violent battle

    6. brutally mauled

crazy violent word-choice, associating that he was attacked, perhaps in an animalistic, or inhumane way.

    1. the Republican Party, which now controls the House and almost half of the Senate

one of the few statistic-based statements in the article

    2. Republicans are very protective of their guns — more than they are of the children and educators forced to leave in fear of these weapons

      another loaded statement

    3. that many of the areas where violent crime is highest across the United States are in red states and, more specifically, GOP-led district

Now this is a fact. Whether or not it is a true statistic would need to be researched, but it is a statistical statement.

    4. lawmakers, especially GOP lawmakers, are only concerned about certain crime.

This is an assumption--maybe based on information, but mostly personal belief--that can only be confirmed by the GOP lawmakers themselves.

    5. horrors

While I--and I think everyone else does too--agree that each school shooting is a horror, this is a loaded word that doesn't necessarily represent a stat or piece of fact.

    6. The cycle of “thoughts and prayers” is laughably insufficient

"Laughably insufficient" is another very loaded, editorialized phrase.

    7. Republicans don’t really care about crime

This in itself is an opinion statement. It's not a statistic or factual statement, but rather a conclusion made by the journalist based on the information they gathered.

    1. Before the collision, the jets dumped fuel on the drone and flew in front of it "in a reckless, environmentally unsound and unprofessional manner," European Command said.

Human interest, not necessarily a huge deal. Obviously this event involves some international conflict, but the event itself is just kind of odd and doesn't necessarily indicate something big.

    2. on Tuesday

Timeless, this occurred just recently, which makes it more prominent news than if it were to have happened a month ago.

    3. nearly caused both aircraft to crash

conflict! The United States and Russia have been in on-and-off conflict in recent years, which greatly increased when Russia invaded Ukraine last spring.
