    1. His point is not that people are only pretending to like or dislike the culture they like and dislike, trying to con people into thinking highly of them.

Some people might say they like opera or jazz, while in reality they truly love rap or another genre that is mainly listened by their generation. However, opera and jazz are usually listened by wealthy aristocratic people and so by saying you enjoy this type of music you try to place yourself in their class of intelligence wealth and taste. In reality you are just trying to impress someone while lying about your personality because society has placed your taste and preferences very lowly on the hierarchical scale.

    2. Was he saying that when you become a bank manager, you automatically start liking the music other bank managers like

It is more about the influence of the people around you. When you interact every day with certain class of people you sooner or later absorb their ideas, tastes and preferences and slowly integrate into their society. A good example is when you were a kid how some of your friends were more prone to be bullies and do bad stuff because of their surrounding and friends while others were emphasizing on schools or sports because their friends had similar interests. It all comes to your surrounding which shapes you as a person. You absorb at least some ideas from it.

    1. hese are the touches that matter; they are our suffering neighbors, whom we deprive of livelihoods in order to preserve resources that we fork over for the magic of the celebrity or the luxury brand.

This is a very interesting point. This proves the idea that very often the brand name attracts consumers more than the spiritual meaning behind the item. Both a zara and a gucci clothing were sewed by a low paid worker but one has a flashy well known logo, with presumably higher quality materials, that exemplifies its price. Another thing to consider is that luxury cars like bentley, Rolls Royce and Aston martin and handcrafted and hand stitched while a lexus or an audi are part of a production line where they are primarily built by machines. If a lexus was handbuild would it be more desirable ? While it could serve as a strong point in their advertisement, I believe that at the end of the day they brand will primarily decide the fate of their sales. For example, mercedes AMG cars claim to have hand build V8 engines compared to BMW cars, however we are not seeing a drastic difference between the purchase of an M4, which doesn't have a hand built engine, and a C63 with the fancy V8.

    2. provided by fine watches, fine art, and other fine objects

The question is weather the pleasure was provided by the quality of the material or its flashy look and status symbolism.

    3. Indeed, in one national survey, many respondents reported that they would be less likely to wear a sweater

I don't find this example to fit well with the author's claim of how some objects are not desired because they possess evil. Here the case is not that much discrimination but fear and hysteria regarding AIDS about which there was very little known in the 80s. There is some good points in this example but I don't find it to be the best choice.

    4. there is no link between owner and Rolex maker, except perhaps in the sense that its owner feels pleasure because he owns what he believes is a real Rolex.

There could be some emotional connection to a rolex watch if it belonged to a beloved one. However, for an item to have an emotional/spiritual attachment to it it is not most of the times brand new. The emotional attachment is established over a long period of time during which the condition of the item might not be as good as a brand new one which might have a higher price.

    1. Ikea Effect.”

great example is Lego. I always felt proud of myself when I build something cool. There is some deeper emotional connection established.

    2. policy aimed at curbing luxury shopping might involve higher marginal tax rates or, as a more targeted intervention, a consumption tax.

This would raise the hype of those items even more. It could drive people into spending even more and putting greater risks on steak so they can portray a fake lifestyle. Besides, the gap between rich and poor will be more evident which could lead to many other social issues...

    3. “luxury fever” takes away from individual consumers money that would be better spent on more substantial goods, such as socializing and travel

This is really interesting point that I have often thought about. While for the same price of a designer backpack or purse one can go on a travel or a social event, the energy and effort is too difficult and time consuming. Quick and easy satisfaction, however temporary, can be obtained by simply sliding the credit card. This long and short term difference in satisfaction reflects greatly on the values of a person and their mindset. It all comes to commitment and time management.

    4. their value is determined by what other people possess

It seems like the harder and more limited an object is to obtain (the more exclusive it is), the more desirable it is. This ties with the previous claim that the whole point is to impress others by showing them you can have something they can't. This artificial hierarchy of personal possession shapes a person's social status in the virtual and real world where they feel of higher value when more people have them as a thought (weather good or bad) in their head. It seems like they feed their self ego and belief of self worth through being discussed or thought about.

    5. “immediate, perceptual, and emotional.”

All these items aim to bring us immediate emotional satisfaction that slowly fades away. This initial excitement influences the rational thinking of a person and blurries their emotional self-control and common sense.

    1. The war on statuary serves two purposes: The first is to humiliate Southerners in retribution for their support of Republican politicians and conservative causes, particularly religious and social causes. The second is to help Democrats win elections without white men. If only whites voted, the last Democratic president would have been Lyndon Johnson.

    1. John Daniel Davidson, Political Editor at The Federalist, explained, “That they were wrong about slavery does not excuse us today from the burden of trying to understand what motivated them to fight—and what motivated them and their families to undertake a flurry of monument-building decades later as the surviving veterans began to die off… A more mature society would recognize that the past is always with you and must always be kept in mind.

    1. There are certain things you know you could’ve gotten away with saying in ’09 that you shouldn’t even formulate as a sentence in your head,” says Desus. “And if you watch our comedy, you’ll know that there’s certain jokes that we used to do that we don’t do anymore because as we’ve experienced the world and met different people, we’ve realised the humour hits different people and it hits differently.

Some comedians, like Chappelle, stick to their roots rather than integrating to modern times. As a result, his jokes and dark humor will be interpreted in modern and future times compared to the past. There is still a large audience which enjoys Chappelle's controversial offensive humor while others find it inappropriate. The issue is that those finding it offensive don't acknowledge that someone else enjoys it, just for the sake of the joke. Chappelle proves to us that we are entering sensitive times where social awareness and tolerance place limits on inappropriate and "counter culture" speech.

    1. Throughout his career, Chappelle constantly reminds us of the complicated territory comedians travel in relationship with their fans, without whom they wouldn’t be working.

The issue with entering new unknown waters is that the steaks in today's society are very high where the smallest mistake can end your career. In today's society, comedians are under the most pressure by the sensitive nature of society that takes everything seriously. As a result, majority of comedians play it safe while other, Like Chappelle, don't care.

    2. On the whole, “Sticks & Stones” exists as a defiant design to intentionally offend large swaths of the audience Chappelle deems too thin-skinned and easily outraged, too quick to find offense, while serving up simple, low-bar yucks to anyone yearning for validation of their anti-P.C. stance.

Chappelle uses the old school dark humor he became famous with intentionally to outrage his listeners and remind them than humor and jokes are to be taken lightly.

Chappelle intentionally makes such a controversial performance to juxtapose the free public perception and humor of 2006 to the modern criticism, sensitivity and political correctness. The issue with the majority of comedians, especially Chappelle is that whatever they say they would always offend someone and that's inevitable. It seems like back in the days people were not as sensitive as they are now.

These topics + politics and pedophilia are very sensitive topics in today's world that any comment on them can spark a fight and offend many people. Chappelle purposefully aims his jokes towards those topics to raise that outrage.

And yet, the most successful comedians tend to be the ones who resist the roles and labels fans assign to them, who test the limits of their craft and fan loyalty along with it.

    1. “The strongest thing a man can do is cry, to expose your feelings, to be vulnerable in front of the world,”

This is interesting because majority of public figures are pressured by society to create an artificial personality in front of the stage where they seem as flawless and emotionless as possible. As a result there have been numerous cases of depression and sometimes even drug abuse or suicide.
