    1. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, 30and say, ‘If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31So you testify against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32Fill up, then, the measure of the guilt of your fathers. 33You serpents, you brood of vipers, how will you escape the sentence of hell? 34 “Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city, 35so that upon you may fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

They are hypocrites because they pretend as though they are more righteous than their ancestors in that they would have revered the prophets and scribes that they prosecuted but fail to realize that they prosecute the prophets and holy men of their time.

    2. You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! 25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. 26You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also. 27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. 28So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Outside they present as Christians but their hearts are not clean.

    3. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.

They are diligent with the "smaller" (but still very important) matters of faith and reject the more damning ones.

    4. “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated.’ 17You fools and blind men! Which is more important, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold? 18And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing, but whoever swears by the offering on it, he is obligated.’ 19You blind men, which is more important, the offering, or the altar that sanctifies the offering? 20Therefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears both by the altar and by everything on it. 21And whoever swears by the temple, swears both by the temple and by Him who dwells within it. 22And whoever swears by heaven, swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.

They try to find "loopholes" with God by making promises but only on certain objects because they feel it absolves them but it does not. When you make a promise to God, you keep it rather than make excuses.

    5. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

They go on missonary trips and the people they end up "saving" end up becoming even worse sinners than them

    1. “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying, 44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet” ’? 45 If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his son?”

If the Jesus the Messiah was simply David's descendant, then how is it that David himself calls Jesus his lord?

    2. ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

The same concept of summation applies to this law also, If you love your neighbour then you won't lie about them, steal from them etc.

    3.  ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’

Jesus answered with this because it summed up all the commandments, if you love God with all your heart, soul and mind then you won't worship idols, call his name in vain, lie, steal etc.

    4. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”

They were trying to trap Jesus by having him pick one commandment which would in turn disregard some other commandment which would be blasphemous.

    5. ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”

Seeing as the Sadducees only believed in the first 5 books of the Bible, Jesus used a quote from Exodus to answer their question. If after death you no longer cease to exist, then it would make no sense for God to say he IS the God of Abraham, Issac or Jacob. If they were dead then he would say he WAS their God. Thus God is the God of the living not the dead because if they were dead how could he be their God just as if a man had no sons he wouldn't be called a father or if a man had no kingdom with subjects he would not be called a king.

    6. Sadducees

Remember they did not believe in the supernatural. No angels, no resurrection none of that. They only lived by the first five books of Moses which have no mention of resurrection thus they were trying to prove the ridiculousness of this idea by questioning Jesus.

    7. Jesus perceived their malice, and said, “Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites? 19Show Me the coin used for the poll-tax.” And they brought Him a denarius. 20And He *said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21They *said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He *said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.” 22And hearing this, they were amazed, and leaving Him, they went away.

The men were hypocrites in asking because the fact that they already had Caesar's coins right in their pockets was already submission enough.

Jesus shows them that fulfilling your civil obligations does not mean you are turning away from God. "Fear God, honour the king". Yes fear God first but you must also fulfil your obligations to the kingdom of man and hold the two separately.

If the Israelites had feared God originally like they should then they would not have been in this predicament as God would have protected them.

    8. Is it lawful to give a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?

In this time Rome was in control of Israel which was problematic because it challenged the sovereignty of God over Israel. Paying this tax almost represented submission to the pagan Romans. Jesus saying that this is lawful would possibly speak against God but saying it is not would make enemies of the Romans.

    1. And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.

We have two options, fall on the stone and allow it to shatter your old life or wait till the stone falls on you on judgement day whereafter you will be punished and condemned.

    2. ‘The stone which the builders rejected, This became the chief corner stone; This came about from the Lord, And it is marvelous in our eyes’

      Psalm 118:22

    3. planted a vineyard and put a wall around it and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower

Israel was often depicted as God's vineyard in various scriptures (Psalms, Isaiah etc.)

    4. found nothing on it except leaves only

Fig trees bear leaves and fruit at the same time rather than fruit after leaves like some other plants. Thus in the fig tree having no fruit but leaves it was 'all show' and could be considered 'false advertising'. This was a metaphor for those who APPEAR to be Christians but are not truly spiritual. This demonstrated that they have no place in heaven.

    5. all the city was stirred

Usually Jesus would avoid public commotions due to him not wanting to draw distracting attention from his mission - saving our souls. In this instance he allowed it because it was almost a show that he was not backing down. Previously he predicted that he would be condemned, scourged and led to suffer so seeing him enter into this destiny with such joy and passion was powerful.

    6. He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there

Jesus did not stay in Jerusalem because a) it was extremely crowded due to the commotion he caused and he had friends in Bethany and b) He did not want to give the impression that he was going to overthrow Jerusalem as a sort of 'king'

    7. the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves.

Regular coins had to be exchanged for temple coins at a fixed exchange rate as they were not accepted.

At the temple, people would purchase exorbitantly priced pre-approved sacrificial doves as bring your own dove may be burdensome and/or risky as it may bot be approved.

    8. Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies You have prepared praise for Yourself

Psalm 8:2 states: Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

    9. Son of David

They called him this because he was born in Bethlehem, David's City and was indeed a descendant of David fulfilling God's promise to David that one of his descendants would rule forever.

    10. “Hosanna to the Son of David;Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord;Hosanna in the highest!”

      Hosanna means 'save, rescue, saviour'

The people of this time likened Jesus to a king but in a different way, they saw him as the type of king who would slay the Gentiles and save and free them from oppression. Jesus was a King who did free them from oppression but from the oppression that they had brought on themselves through sin, the ultimate wrath of God.

Remember that the people of this time saw kingship as glory, ruling over, bravado etc. but Jesus revealed to us that true kingship is servitude. This, and what they truly NEEDED (salvation from their sins)-not wanted, is something those people did not recognise.

    11. robbers’ den.

Jeremiah 7:11 states: Has this house, which bears My name, become a den of robbers in your sight? Yes, I too have seen it, declares the LORD.

      Jesus is perhaps referencing this

    12. My house shall be called a house of prayer

Isaiah 56:7 states: I will bring them to My holy mountain and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on My altar, for My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations.

Jesus is perhaps making reference to this

    13. “Say to the daughter of Zion,‘Behold your King is coming to you,Gentle, and mounted on a donkey,Even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”

In Rome, there was a tradition of riding a great white horse after victories in slaying and pillaging your enemies. Jesus directly contradicted this tradition by humbly appearing on a simple colt. He was its direct antipodes. Jesus had no desire for grandeur.

    1. But many who are first will be last; and the last, first.

You will be rewarded but do not expect to be rewarded based upon what you deserve, you will be rewarded by God's grace. He will never give us less than we deserve but he may sometimes give us more.

    2. “Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Remember, we are to humble ourselves like children for such like them are greatest in the kingdom of Heaven.

    3. “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, 19and will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and scourge and crucify Him, and on the third day He will be raised up.”

Jesus was so specific in his prediction. There were so many ways for him to die but he foretold this one and it came exactly true.

    4. And Jesus stopped

During the most important journey of his life, the journey to our salvation, the thing that made Jesus stop, was two blind pitiful men because he was so loving and compassionate. If he hears us crying out to him, Jesus will answer. Sometimes it may not be exactly what we want but it is always what we need because we know not what we ask.

    5. “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. 26It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, 27and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; 28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

The Gentiles think of leadership and rulership as power, as exercising authority over your people. James and John seem to also subscribe to this ideology. But Jesus says it is not so, James and John are mistaken to ask for rulership in Heaven alongside Jesus. That is because rulership entails servitude, it entails sacrifice and putting your people before yourself. Jesus was and still is king and his life did not entail glory, but the most insufferable death of all.

    6. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink

In the Old Testament, it was widely stated that God has a cup wish contained his wrath, judgment and anger for all those who sinned against him. Jesus was about to drink from this cup so that we would not.

This is the cup that contains all the punishment we should have recived for all the sins we commit, Jesus however took that on and baptized himself, immersed himself in the wine of that cup all for us.

Keep this teaching in mind, seeing as Jesus suffers for our sins, the more sins we commit the more we hurt him. Yes he will forgive us of them, but why would we want to punish him more for something we did.

    7. You do not know what you are asking

We never know what we are asking, often times we never know the full story and extent of a situation. Unlike God we are not all knowing and present.

    8. “If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be cast into the eternal fire. 9If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be cast into the fiery hell.

We have to sacrifice! There is nothing worth more than the kingdom of heaven

    9. but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

It is one thing to commit a sin yourself, but to lead someone else to sin is dreadful and even worse is leading a believer to sin.

*Dressing modestly can help prevent our brother and sisters from committing sins of lust.

    10. Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. 4Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven

In Jesus' time children were seen as property, they were greatly overlooked and did not care as a child is less concerned with status and things like that. Therefore we are to humble ourselves as children and not with false deliberate humility, but genuine humility in understanding that we are to serve God and only seek assurance from him alone.

    1. “Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

As humans sometimes we may fall into the trap of becoming too attached to our possessions. This may become an obstacle in terms of giving ourselves fully to the Lord. That is why those who do not have much can sometimes be stronger believers because they have nothing to distract them and pull them away from the kingdom, they have not 2 masters to serve. This however does not mean that the rich are doomed, just that they should beware.

    2. The Rich Young Ruler

This story illustrates why good works alone cannot save you. The rich young ruler was able to obey all the commandments about his fellow man, but unable to obey the most important commandment of all: we should have no other Gods before God. For the ruler he was unable to enter the kingdom because money was revered in his life seeing as how he was unable to give it up.

    1. Take that and give it to them for you and Me.”

The drachma tax was for the upkeep of the temple. Sons did not need to pay this tax as the temple was their home, you would not need to pay to see your father. Jesus was a son (a rabbi and Son of God) therefore he was exempt from the tax but Peter was not. Similarly to how Jesus suffered on the cross for sins he did not commit to atone for our sins, he paid this tax he did not owe for Him and Peter.

  2. Aug 2020
    1. “Watch out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

Be cautious of false teachers as there teachings may appear small and harmless at first but overtime can spread and infect your soul.

    2. An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah.

The final sign the non-believers will have is when Jesus rises from the dead, if they still do not believe after seeing that and his miracles in person then they will never believe.

    1. ‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me. 9 But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’ ”

The Pharisees may follow all the traditions and appear righteous but clearly they do not care about love and compassion as they are accepting donations to the temple that from people who neglect their parents. If their hearts were in the right place they would care more about those people's parents rather than getting donations.

    2. But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God,” 6he is not to honor his father or his mother#I.e. by supporting them with it.’ And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

Jesus called the pharisees out on the fact that they were using a tradition to absolve people from the word of God. You are to honor your father and mother (provide for them, be respectful etc. because they brought you into the world). But the Pharisees say 'Oh if you give us this offering (Corban) it's fine, you don't need to provide for your parents because you're donating to God's temple. This is using tradition to excuse yourself from sin.

    3. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, 46and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

This parable is similar to the parable of the hidden treasure, Jesus is the merchant who was seeking us, (the children of God), the pearl and once he found us and saw who's hands we were in, he gave everything to rescue us back.

    4. “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

This parable speaks of how Jesus gave up everything to save us. Similarly to the Parable of the Tares, Jesus is the man (sower in the Tares Parable) and the field is the world and the treasure is us.

Jesus knew how valuable we were so he came down to earth and gave his life for us to save us from damnation. It is to be noted that in the field that the treasure is originally in, it is not valued. The Devil does not care about us but Jesus does.

Resources: 1 Corinthians 6:2 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

There is no action that we can do to be worthy of the kingdom of Heaven, it is only through faith. That is why this specific parable is not about how we must 'give up everything to follow Jesus'. We definitely should still do that, but that salvation would not even be possible without what Jesus did first.

    5. 33He spoke another parable to them, “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened.”

Similar to the parable of the mustard seed, this parable speaks of the great effects seemingly small, insignificant things can have.

Also change in the kingdom of Heaven comes from within not without. When God first changes the heart of a person, and that internal change has external manifestations. Christians within a culture act as agents of change, slowly transforming that culture from within.

    6. He presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; 32and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.”

Every little thing matters, the small good things you do for the Lord can blossom into beautiful, fruitful results but remember the things that may not seem 'that bad' can multiply and grow also.

    7. “Behold, the sower went out to sow; 4and as he sowed,

Some may ask why does the sower (God/Jesus/the church) waste the seed (the word of God) on soil (people) he knows may not receive it, why not just throw it on the good soil?

Well that's because us, God loves us so much and wants us to be in the kingdom of Heaven so much, he knows that we are never too far gone and that ANYONE can be saved. So us, the church, should not just disregard some people as unrighteous because we never know what seeds may end up taking hold and producing beautiful fruit.

    8. And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.

This is the righteous, those who are saved will take the seed and use it to produce love, joy, peace etc.

    9. And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

This person is one who is welcoming to the word of God and wants to accept it but allows the world to steer them off the right path. The life of a Christian is not meant to be easy, you are supposed to face challenges but instead you are to turn to God to overcome those challenges not worldly things. Recall the narrow path/gates.

    10. The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away

Remember we have to ponder and reflect on the word of God, we can't just jump 'Lord! Lord!' and expect to be welcomed to the kingdom of Heaven. Recall Jesus' parables about the king who strategised and calculated before going to war.

    11. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road.

There are some people who have been taken by 'the evil one' who may never accept God's word or even consider it because they are so captivated by sin

    12. “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed #Or darnel, a weed resembling wheattares among the wheat, and went away. 26But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also. 27The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ 28And he said to them, ‘An enemy has done this!’ The slaves *said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?’ 29But he *said, ‘No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’ ”

This parable speaks of how the Son of Man sows 'seeds', by spreading the gospel, performing miracles etc. but the Devil comes and sows his seeds also of sin and evil. The servants of God ask him are we supposed to remove those seeds and separate the holy from the unholy but Jesus says no, that is not our place. We are the servants and the onus is not on us to make judgements about who is righteous and who isn't, it's on God, he will make the final judgement not us.

    1. “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”

When we are convicted and want to change our sinful ways it is not just a 'one time' thing. Christians have to make the daily effort to repent because idleness is a pathway to destruction. You cannot just stop practicing your sinful ways, you have to replace them with godly ways. Because just being void will allow those sinful ways to come back sevenfold

The impure spirit leaves us yes, but then it goes out seeking a new home and cannot find one thus it returns to us and finds us empty, cleaned up and ready for re-occupation. It even goes as far to bring seven other evil spirits with it to dwell in your heart. Conviction without repentance is dangerous.

    2. “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 35A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Good things cannot come from bad people. In order to produce good works you have to have a complete change of heart.Your words are an overflowing of what is in your heart and will be used to judge you so watch what you say. Do not blaspheme against the Lord.

    3. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 31And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

Again lukewarmness is not permitted, you cannot be indifferent to Jesus, that is just as good as being completely against him. The wilful rejection of the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. If you see Jesus and his works and see no other explanation for his works other than God and still choose to reject him then you commit unforgivable blasphemy

    4. “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.

Jesus ties up the 'strong man' Lucifer, and plunders his house for the souls he has captured ie he saves them

    5. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

The Lord is opening their eyes to the fact that the Messiah is here! He already disproved that Satan is empowering him so by the process of elimination it must be the Holy Spirit thus he must be the Messiah

    6. “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand?

Jesus is saying that it would not make sense that he is driving out demons by Satan. Why would Satan drive out his own demons? A household divided against itself cannot stand so it makes no sense for him to empower Jesus to drive out demons because that would divide his kingdom

    7. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he has brought justice through to victory.

He will be do discrete that not even a reed almost at its breaking point will be broken by him nor a dying flame will he out until he has finished his mission of saving the Isrealites

    8. He will not quarrel or cry out;no one will hear his voice in the streets.

That is why Jesus did not want people to share his miracles.

He did not want to cause any unnecessary commotion that would distract from his mission of saving sinners

    9. If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’#12:7 Hosea 6:6 you would not have condemned the innocent.

Here Jesus is explaining that the Lord values mercy above burdensome, stress-inducing rules. The Pharisees have lost sight of what God truly wants and that's love and compassion for his people.

    10. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Let go of all the burden on your shoulders placed there by the laws of the Pharisees and instead find comfort in Jesus as he is loving and accepting

    11. “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.

Remember we are called to be like children in that they are humble and meek and know they now nothing not the 'wise and learned' because those are the proud who think they know everything and do not need Jesus. We are of this world, we cannot know everything.

    12. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Those who accept Jesus also accept God and those who accept God accept Jesus as the two are not exclusive of each other

    13. For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

Those who know of Jesus and reject him will have it worse than those who do not know of him

    14. “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others: 17 “ ‘We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’ 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

Jesus is saying that here he and John the Baptist are fulfilling the prophecies but the people are rejecting them and casting them off as sinners

    15. From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,#11:12 Or been forcefully advancing and violent people have been raiding it.

Ever since John has began preaching, there have been many new believers eager to join the kingdom of Heaven that it almost seems as if Heaven is under attack

    1. Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

While John the Baptist was a great man, he was still an earthly sinner and even the least 'significant' person in Heaven was still more important than him because the were in Heaven after all!

    2. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Don't worry about what others say, worry about God because our fellow mortals can only destroy our bodies but God can destroy our bodies and souls

    3. So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Do not worry about material, worldly things, God will provide. But remember the beatitude - blessed are those who mourn, it did not mean mourn material things like these, it meant mourn your actions in relation to God, ie feeling guilty and worrying when you sin because that will inspire you not to do it again

    4. “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Jesus was saying that there seemed to be many people eager to join the Kingdom of God but there were too few people to guide them (they were sheep without shepherds). So Jesus told his disciples to pray to God to send more shepherds ('workers')

    5. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”

Jesus hid his miracles because he did not want people to focus on them, he wanted people to focus on his teachings and his sacrifice at the cross

    6. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

You need not seek gratification from the world for your deeds, have faith that God will reward you in Heaven. Once you begin to seek praise (reward) for your actions from the world, the Lord will not give you any

    7. No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

In Jesus' coming a new covenant has been formed, you cannot apply the laws of the old covenant to the new covenant. There are new practices for this covenant - fasting in awaiting the Lord is one of the old practices because the Lord has arrived

    8. The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.

They will fast again when Jesus is gone and they are awaiting his second return

    9. “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them?

The people fast because they are awaiting the coming of God, Jesus is with them so they need not fast anymore

    10. “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’#9:13 Hosea 6:6 For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Remember it is easy to love those who love you and treat those who treat you with respect with respect, as Christians we are to take the narrow gate - the hard path, even tax collectors can love those who love them.

Thus Jesus was showing the people that it is the tax collectors and sinner who are to be embraced the most. You must not shun sinners. You must embrace them so that they will repent and be called to the kingdom of Heaven.

    11. Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 22But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Being a Christian is your number 1 priority at all times

    12. “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

The life of a Christian is not meant to be easy, remember seek the narrow gate

    13. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23Then I will tell them plainly,

God does not accept the lukewarm or hypocrites. You have to actually 'put in the work'

    14. For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Do onto others as you would have them do onto you, you will be judged by the same standard that you judge others on

    15. Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life#6:27 Or single cubit to your height?

      Worrying is futile

    16. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, # 6:22 The Greek for healthy here implies generous. your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eyes are unhealthy,#6:23 The Greek for unhealthy here implies stingy. your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

This means, our soul is dictated by what it is we value, care about and want in life. The things we set our 'eye' on are what will dictate our intentions and whether these intentions are good or bad.

    17. “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’#4:4 Deut. 8:3”

Nothing takes precedence over God, in this scenario Jesus was extremely hungry but eating would cause him to sin against God so he did not eat

    1. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.

Essentially, quality over quantity. You do not need to babble on as long as you mean and understand what you say. If you're just talking without any true conviction then it is futile

    2. because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

He was not like the temple leaders who only paid attention to rules and regulations, he had true authority - They would preach through the conviction of others but you can see in how Jesus says "I" and "my" that he is real

    3. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

Don't be distracted by their appearances, actually listen and ponder what people teach you about the Lord and compare it with scripture.

Remember that Jesus actually wants us to understand what he teaches, not to be overly eager and have completely blind devotion, yes we must have faith and obedience but remember why he teaches in parables, so that he can separate those who are truly listening and thinking from the mindless 'yes men'

    4. “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

Simply, the path to heaven is the narrow gate: it is not easy nor is it meant to be. This analogy also pushes the point that we must keep our sights in the Lord and only the Lord - the path is narrow

The wide gate is the easier path, the one we are not meant to follow. As humans it is our nature to sin, it comes to us very easily thus it is difficult for us to stay righteous so it would mean something is off if the Christian lifestyle is coming easily to us, it would mean we are not truly following that life.

    5. “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! 12So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

If us mere mortals can provide for those who depend on us, imagine what the Lord can provide for his followers. And if you do not provide for those who depend on you like the Lord does then except that same treatment from the Lord.

Remember we are called to exemplify Jesus so if you do not provide for your brother then do not expect Jesus to provide for you

    6. When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.

Jesus was amazed because the centurion a. knew that he was not worthy of the Lord as none of us are, we are all born sinners and b. because the centurion knew that God's word was enough, Jesus did not need to travel to his home, he knew that once Jesus said it is done, it was done

He was especially amazed given that the man was a centurion, they are warriors and killers so for him to have one of the greatest displays of faith was incredible
