    1. It’s important to understand – just because we have don’t have certain kinds of privileges, it doesn’t mean that we don’t benefit from other kinds of privileges.

      This statement really hit home for me. I grew up in a middle class family and never really struggled, and for a period in my life I saw being wealthy as a priviledge that I didn't have, ignoring the various other priviledges that I do have.

    2. With friends, I sometimes will bring up the subject of privilege (not in a preachy way, I swear!) and am always surprised at how divisive the topic is.

      There have been many instances where I have brought up privilege to some former friends, and talking about some of the things in which us as white, middle class people have that others do not. The problem always boiled down to them saying, "well if they just worked harder", "everyone has the same opportunities", etc. This was something I struggled to combat with trying to explain to them to think about some of the underlying factors that led you to the place of privilege and where others have not had the same experiences.
