    1. He drank an Anis at the bar and looked at the people. They were all waiting reasonably for the train. He went out through the bead curtain. She was sitting at the table and smiled at him.

This story basically ends with them drinking apart. Possibly symbolizing that no matter what happens, their relationship isn't going to last and they will end up apart. The American claims that this problem is the only one in their relationship, but as shown by this scene, one of their biggest problems is the inability to face challenges together in a healthy way. That is kind of dooming their relationship

    2. And once they take it away, you never get it back.’

Once the pregnancy is terminated, she can't have the baby back. The girl feels like she is pulled in two directions. Either she has to say goodbye to her lifestyle and the way her relationship currently is, or she has to say goodbye to a child that it seems like she wants

    3. every day we make it more impossible.’

If she's pregnant, every day that continues the baby grows in her stomach, and the operation gets all the more risky. If they keep the baby, she understands that it will force them both to abandon the lifestyle we see them currently leading (travelling all over, drinking, etc.)

    4. f you don’t want to you don’t have to. I wouldn’t have you do it if you didn’t want to. But I know it’s perfectly sim

He keeps telling her that it's her decision, but he also keeps stressing how it's not a big deal. He is implying that the educated and logical decision is to get the abortion. Essentially, he's saying "It's your choice, but you're not being smart if you decide not to", which considering how insecure the girl is, will make her feel like she has to. How much choice is he really giving her?

    5. ‘I’ll go with you and I’ll stay with you all the time. They just let the air in and then it’s all perfectly natural.’

They are talking about the girl getting an abortion. He keeps repeating that it's simple and they 'let the air in', without actually getting into the technicalities of the operation. He's putting a lot of effort into minimizing the physical and mental impact of the procedure.

    6. ‘That’s the only thing that bothers us. It’s the only thing that’s made us unhappy.’

This contradicts what the girl said earlier. She implied the presence of other problems in their relationship, but to the American, this is the only thing that's making them unhappy. He isn't being intuitive enough to realize that the girl is unhappy about other things as well. This kind of erases her voice.

    7. ‘It’s really an awfully simple operation, Jig,’ the man said. ‘It’s not really an operation at all.’

Her nickname is Jig--> is it a reference to dancing or jigging around a central issue instead of confronting it head-on?

    8. Should we have another drink?’

They're drinking instead of facing an obvious issue head-on. Validates the girl's previous statement that "all they do is look at things and try new drinks". It seems like they incapable of getting to a deeper level in this relationship.

    9. ‘They don’t really look like white elephants. I just meant the colouring of their skin through the trees.

The girl is correcting herself. She doesn't have the confidence to stand by her statement, and second-guesses her statement. The man has a lot of control over her opinions and thoughts because of how insecure she is and how confident/controlling he is.

    10. nk. That’s all we do, isn’t it – look at things and try new drinks?’

'Iceberg Theory'= Character says something that implies the presence of a much deeper issue. Besides the slight disagreement we are witnessing in this story, this quote shows us that at least the girl is dissatisfied with several other things in their relationship. They have more than one problem

    11. ‘I don’t know,’ the girl said. ‘Is it good with water?’‘It’s all right.’‘You want them with water?’ asked the woman.‘Yes, with water.’

Another example of her deferring to him for everything.

    12. ‘Listen’

Last time I checked, this isn't the most polite way to get the attention of a server. Establishes his personality as constantly being in control of the situation, kind of authoritarian.

    13. ‘Could

She doesn't say "I want to try it", or even "Should we try it", she says 'could'. 'Could' implies asking for permission. Establishes that the girl defers to the man for even the simplest decisions.

    14. ‘They look like white elephants,’ s

White elephants= reference to something that is 'unwanted'. Irony= The reference of elephants sounds similar to 'elephant in the room'... ie. something is obviously going on, but the couple are trying to skirt around it due its controversial or touchy nature

    15. The woman brought two glasses of beer

The bartender/waitress is referred to as a woman, while the female significant other of the American is only called 'the girl'? What is the difference between the two? Age?
