    1. quietly disposed of hundreds more bodies

i didn't read the article about the theory, but just the fact that people would consider that tells you something about who handled the situation, and how it was handled.

    2. didn’t ratify the 15th Amendment, which gave black people the right to vote, until 1959,

this is surprisingly recent, and i had no idea that this happened just around fifty years ago? that seems... so, so close. it's shocking to learn just how racist america was (is, but working on it). i looked this up, and it turns out the last state to ratify the 15th amendment was tennessee in 1997. i can't believe just how recent this is.

    3. ‘Why do you bring up this history? It’s gone, it’s in the past, it’s dead.

this relates to what we learned in history class; history matters! ignoring the context of the world around us is dangerous, ignorant, and damaging to the very fabric of our society

    4. neo-Nazis and others spewing sexually explicit comments or death threats frequently protest her events

this is a horrible reaction to someone trying to educate people, and it doesn't help that a major wold leader refused to condemn white supremacist hate groups

    5. neoliberal

what does this mean? i've never heard the term neoliberal before, and skimming through articles on the internet, the definitions are overly complicated and unclear.

    6. higher rents or deposits and adding on additional fees

...is that even legal? are there people out there who are trying to stop this? is it still happening currently?

    1. Sub-freezing temperatures shortened some of the races

do horses get cold? were the races shortened out of concern for the riders or the horsed (or, to be fair, both)?

    2. feminine trainer

i'm a little confused about this but i'm starting to suspect that this actually means something and isn't just weird and mildly disrespectful

    3. frequently telephoning Portland Meadows to check his progress.

so kids are sent there to learn how to do competitive horse racing?

    4. girls

this is yet another one relating to my annotations earlier, and still specific and nit-picky, but why call them 'girls'? they're obviously fully grown women, and it feels like talking down to them. also, they're royalty, so it's... not the best idea to call them 'girls'? but again, i might be lacking the connotation, and 'girls' could be used colloquially to refer to anyone of that gender.

    5. feminine

this is a continuation of my comment on the previous words in this sentence, and a little nit-picky about words, but why couldn't they just have said 'female'? why does them being 'feminine' matter? being feminine is not directly related to being female, so why is the connotation here that it is?

    6. Powder Puff Derby

why was it called the 'powder puff derby'? maybe i'm not fully comprehending due to lack of proper historical context, but this seems disrespectful to the participants, particularly because they are female?

    7. crowd of 6,149

this ties in to my previous annotation, but this seems like a complete contrast between what had been described about del's horse racing and how it was in the 1950's.

    8. “Sport of Kings” to an afterthought for most Americans seeking diversion

was this before or after charley's time? i think del must be racing after horse racing became less popular, just because all of the venues described in the book have been very suspect and not very professional sounding?
