    1. College-bound high school graduates may not know it, but BLS data show that wages are usually higher, and unemployment rates lower, for people who continue their education after high school.

This is a reason my sister still took online classes while during her gap year because she wanted to continue her education while giving herself some extra freedom to explore life.

    2. But looking into the types of careers you might like can help set you up for success.

I wonder if people started focusing on what careers they were interested in sooner if gap years would be necessary. I know people take time off for many reasons, but figuring out what you want is definitely a big one.

    3. Most people need some preparation before they’re ready for the workforce, and planning should begin long before it’s time to start a career.

I want to ask my sister if she felt prepared for the workforce or if she could have started planning her career sooner.

    1. Avoid Senioritis and the Senior Slump

I have seen my friends go through this, so it is definitely a real struggle for many high school seniors. I wonder if my sister felt as if she let herself slip during her senior year because she was almost done.

    2. Don’t worry about definites and don’t let yourself get bogged down in specifics; instead, focus on issues such as what you are searching for out of work and a career, what success means to you, what is important in your life.

This seems like very good advice considering a lot of people are not sure what they want to do with their life. In my interview I could potentially ask if my sister ever received advice like this or how she went through this process.

    3. actively volunteered with local agencies, or have been involved in the community in other ways

When my sister was looking for a job, her friend suggested volunteering and community service in order to obtain references for job applications.

    4. This article is about helping you manage and make the transition from high school to college.

I like this article because this is a main topic in my interview with my sister. By reading this I will have a different perspective on the transition into adulthood, which I think will benefit my understanding of what she went / is going through.

    1. Classes are cheaper and admission much easier — and many students work at least part-time to pay their way. You can either take a few classes, follow a dipolma or certification track, or advance toward your associate’s degree.

I feel like this would appeal to many people who are not quite sure what they want to do with their life. It allows them to continue their education in a less intense way so they can focus on figuring out their goals.

    2. While you are trying to find your place in the world, why not spend those first few years after high school making a difference?

My sister's friend suggested doing volunteer work in order to obtain references for job applications.

    1. MJ: Uh-huh

This interview was interesting because it was not so much asking questions it was more of just a conversation with real time reactions to what was being said. That being said there was still important information exchanged and communicated which means it was successful.

    2. The initial thing to do was just try and hold you up as best I can–just hug you like I would my own mother.

This explanation of his thinking and actions is true communication and he is being very vulnerable with her. That is what you strive to have during an interview because if the person you are interviewing is not comfortable they may not answer your questions with the complete truth and freedom.

    1. KM: You intimidated me when I was little. JK: I did? (Laughs) KM: Yeah. You did.

I also love this interaction because they are learning about each other and as a result growing closer and strengthening their relationship.

    2. I was really surprised by my grandpa saying, sorry. I’ve never heard him say sorry.

I love that this reaction was included in the transcript because it shows that her question triggered an answer from her grandfather that she was not expecting. I think the whole purpose of this interview was to get to know him better and this just shows that she was successful.

    1. SP: What went through your head when you first saw me?

This question on the other hand seems a little out of the blue and did not connect or flow well from the previous answer. However, that does not mean that is was not a good question.

    2. SP: Why did you go to jail?

This first question is an example of an effective interviewing strategy because the answer will not be a simple yes or no. It directs the interviewee into giving their answer thought and create a natural conversation opener.

    1. Jones has claimed the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks were an inside job, that the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School was a hoax, and that President Obama would round up people into concentration camps.

Theories like this are intriguing to lots of people because they show some form of corruption of the country which is drama. People love drama it makes their lives more interesting. There is a reason people watch reality tv, it's because it is as close to reality as you can get but with the added value of elevated levels of drama that people crave.

    2. Conspiracy theories, which typically involve one or more powerful agents secretly manipulating world events, are accepted by a large proportion of Americans.

People like to blame others for things that go wrong. Also, bringing in large entities to a conspiracy makes it more entertaining for people which is one of the most attractive features of a conspiracy. The theory has to be slightly plausible while also having some form of entertainment involved.

    3. he does not espouse explicitly racist views

People are taking the words of this man which are not "explicitly racist" and throwing them out of whack to support their extreme views of race. This can cause people who don't listen to him to think he is racist, when in fact just his listeners are.

    4. Conspiracy Theorist

I think one of the reasons a lot of people do not believe in conspiracies is because they are only theories. There is not enough information to prove that they are true. People will believe whatever has the most proof to back it up because that is the most logical thing to do.

    5. In fact, people who endorse some conspiratorial claims (e.g., that Princess Diana faked her own death) are also more likely to endorse inconsistent alternatives

So does this mean that they will support any conspiracy theory? It doesn't make sense that they would believe more than one conspiracy theory about one topic because they would conflict.

    6. What makes conspiracy theories compelling to so many people? And why are some people more compelled to believe them than others?

I think conspiracy theories are entertaining to many people which means they will want to hear more. Just because someone is entertained by conspiracy theories doesn't mean they necessarily believe them. However, people who do believe conspiracy theories may be ignorant and might not have background knowledge on the topic being discussed.

    1. It motivates me to make sure that I stay on the right path.

This story is so unique and I am so glad that they were able to create a bond that was like mother and son. She is helping keep him on the right track in life which he takes as motivation and it is making him a better person.

    2. –I knew it was over, that I had totally forgiven you.

It is inspiring that this woman could get over all the emotions that came with having her son murdered and she let herself get to know the person behind the crime. People grow and I think it was important that she knew that Oshea was no longer the boy who killed her son but a different human now who she could develop a very special relationship with.

    1. It made me feel very sad because I don’t want you to be lonely. And I will never walk away from you. Mom, it feels good to be talking to you about this. It makes me understand why you went to jail.

I love the daughter's response because the mom was afraid of telling her such an intimate and emotional moment of her life, but Savannah was mature and understood the situation. She wanted to let her mom know that she would always love her and be there for her.

    2. You were born in a real hospital like every other baby that’s born, but then you came back to Rikers Island with me. So you stayed with mommy, because there’s a part of the jail for mommies and babies there

It relieves me a little to hear that there are special sections in prisons for mothers because not only are they surrounded by people going through the same thing as you, but I feel like it is a safer and calmer environment for the mothers to really focus on their children.

    1. In 1979, Sybil was awarded the U.S. Navy Department’s Distinguished Public Service Award, presented to civilians for specific courageous or heroic acts.

Not only does Adm. Stockdale have an absolutely amazing legacy, his wife has notable accomplishments as well. She was the driving force in the community of people who had family members that were POWs. She paved the way home for many American prisoners, and gave hope and support to their families.

    2. Those questions immediately became a sound bite and a punchline for late night comedians, and for millions of Americans, they defined a man they knew little about.

It is disheartening to hear that people were mocking such an incredible person. If they had any idea what Adm. Stockdale had gone through or done for their country they would most definitely have had second thoughts about making jokes about him. But even then, I think the fact that they are making fun of any person based on little to no information is appalling. I think it is imperative to educate yourself before making any assumptions or opinions on the matter.

    1. You need to “roll with age, don’t worry about it, it’s coming. Enjoy life, it’s wonderful.”

This advice is really wise because of course you want to enjoy your life as much as possible, but many people worry and stress over getting older. This is not beneficial because not only are you obsessing over the future, you are also neglecting the present.

    2. remembered her grandfather as once being an intimidating figure in her life, but as they have both grown older and maintained their close relationship, she now sees him as fun, protective, and loving.

I think one of the purposes of StoryCorps is to connect people on a different level than they previously were. This is shown here as Kara had once thought of her grandfather as an intimidating presence, but after her interview with him, she grew closer to him and they developed a new stronger bond.

    1. There are sometimes good reasons to use the passive voice:

I never realized how confusing sentences actually were. Before this, I didn't think about what type of voice to use when I wrote, now I know that these decisions can create stronger essays and stories.

    2. Unless you have a reason not to, use the active voice.

I always have trouble writing in active voice especially during narratives because it's easier to tell a story instead of showing.

    1. Perhaps it is because your brain was able to register the OLD, familiar information before it has to register the NEW, unfamiliar information.

I like the way they explain this example because it is clear and helpful.

    2. 1TRANSITIONS 2: THE OLD/NEW CONTRACTWhat is the old/new contract?

I had never heard of this strategy before this, but it seems effective especially because there is research to back it up.

    1. His apology becomes a reflection on a life of struggle with little reward at the end.

I admire the ability that he has to take a seemingly unimportant event in his life and turn it into a reflection of understanding the hardships that the mouse has gone through. Burns allows us to see into the life of a field mouse and shows us the similarities we have as humans with them.

    2. the dialect causes it to be read as though in a foreign language.” Readers miss “the sadness and despair contained within the lines of this poem,”

When reading the actual poem I found it difficult to capture the feeling because the wording was extremely difficult to follow. In the English version I could understand the words and their meaning, but I think the emotion was lost in translation.

    3. But Burns the poet moves her. Lochhead’s poem From a Mouse is a response to one of his most famous poems,

The poem written by Burns was a crucial factor of her creation of the poem From a Mouse. This is good background information that gives us insight into how and why From a Mouse was written. The factors that influence the author are important to understanding the text because we can fully capture the picture they are trying to convey.

    1. Here are ten things I learned on the long and winding road of self-distribution:

Like in Hideaway GIrl's blog there is a list. I think they are very effective and popular in blogs because you can get to the point and it helps them stay organized with their thoughts.

    1. I feel like I should tell you a few things about myself so I’ve done a list. I can’t do cartwheels. I hate it when people wink at me. I love to write and talk! I’m also very addicted to chocolate.

This is a really good way to introduce yourself in a blog since people do not want to read lengthy paragraphs about somebody. This gets to the point and adds a more personal touch to it. I also like how she tells us why she is giving us this information.

    2. I hope you enjoy my no theme blog

I think this allows the writer a lot of freedom since she doesn't have to stay within a certain theme when writing for her blog. However, this also means that she will need to write about some exciting topics in order for readers to stay interested in what she has to say.
