apply. The process of resocialization is typically more stressful than normal socialization because people have to unlearn behaviors that have become customary to them.
I think the transition from elementary to middle school and eventually high school was the most evident case of resocialization for me. In elementary school, I felt that I could be myself and I wouldn't have trouble making friends or fitting in. I could be goofy and socially awkward and still find a way to be accepted because we were all children with less rigid social hierarchies. When I got to middle school, I found myself alone a good chunk of the time and my awkward personality became something of a liability when being "cooler" and more socially adjusted was more accepted. The standards became higher in high school when I found myself not being able to connect with barely any of my friends from elementary and middle school. The girls I was friends with ended up becoming more socially mature than I was, and it was me who didn't change how I was used to interacting with others. I now had to attempt to learn how to interact with other girls my age, which was incredibly tricky.
