    1. His love was likeDriving a new Maserati down a dead-end street

There is a repetition of "driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street" since the start of the song. This shows how the persona thought that the relationship could have been so "rich" and "luxurious" but ended up being wasted away with no happy ending for the persona. This makes me reflect upon the theme of "dedication" and how the it takes effort and dedication from both parties of a relationship to make it work and continue without it coming to an end so suddenly. I feel sorry for the persona as the opportunity for such a happy relationship to start was wasted away, but I feel proud for her at the same time as the persona was able to move on from this incident and face those "coloured" emotions

    2. And that's why he's spinning 'round in my head (Red, red)Comes back to me, burning red (Red, red)(Red, red) Yeah, yeah(Red, red)

The words "he's spinning round in my head" further highlights how getting over the relationship is tough. However this time, when the memories come flashing back again, it comes "burning red" showing the persona's hatred and anger with "him" breaking up and ending the relationship with her. This shows the progression of the persona's breakup since the start of it till now, and also highlights the persona's change of feelings. This makes me feel proud for the persona as she is enduring all of this pain and slowly making it out without harming anyone nor herself.

    3. Remembering him comes in flashbacks and echoesTell myself it's time now, gotta let goBut moving on from him is impossibleWhen I still see it all in my headIn burning red

The words "flashbacks and echoes" shows how even though the persona has moved on from her relationship, she still often has some memories of him in the form of "flashbacks and echoes" emphasising how the relationship has made a deep impact on her and she could not completely forget about it. The words "gotta let go" shows her trying her best to forget and move on but "moving on from him is impossible". This shows the constant struggle she is putting herself through and the amount of endurance required from her to deal with these "red" emotions. I reflect upon the theme "fading beauty" and how all good things may come to an end, similar to her relationship and how it came to an end despite it being good at the start. I feel pity for her as the pain of moving on is extreme and no on deserves to go through it.

    4. Touching him was like realizing all you ever wanted was right there in front of you Memorizing him was as easy as knowing all the words to your old favorite song

In the beginning of the verse, the persona is reminiscing about her past memories during her relationship that were joyous and worthwhile to her. In the two lines, there is a repetition of the word "all", emphasising how she "he" was the absolute perfect one for her and how she did not need to change anything about "him". The word, "realizing" shows how she did not know that "he" would have been the perfect one for her until the persona got to know him emphasising the time taken before truly "loving" him. Then, the persona goes on talks about how "memorising" him was easy, highlighting how she wanted to know all about him, which further emphasises the interest and passion she had for him. This makes me reflect upon the theme of romance, and how not all relationships are formed upon first sight, but takes time and effort to find and realise that they are that perfect "someone". This makes me feel satisfied for the reader as she was able to find that "perfect someone" that she had been longing for and is able to enjoy the joy in romance

    5. (Red, red)(Red, red)But loving him was red(Red, red)(Red, red)

The use of the brackets shows the voices in her head that are constantly ranting the words " red" and interrupting her song. This emphasises her true feelings and the sheer amount of pain she was actually facing, but just masked it all with melodies and music. This makes me reflect upon the theme of "expectations vs reality" and how not everything may seem fine until you experience it yourself.

    6. Losing him was blue like I'd never knownMissing him was dark gray, all alone (Whoa)Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you never metBut loving him was red

In the chorus of the song, there's a clear use of colors representing the persona's feelings that she felt during their relationship, The color "blue" being related to the feelings of missing someone right after losing them. The words, " I'd never known" emphasises how she did not expect to feel such pain of missing someone until it actually happened. "dark gray" is related to the loneliness felt after losing them, and the sudden change from a once happy atmosphere to a sombre one. "red" is representing all the intense emotions that were felt during that relationship, possibly from the constant arguements that could not be resolved and the differences they had with each other. " forgetting him was like tryna know somebody you've never met" This shows how it was impossible for her to forget about this relationship further emphasising the pain and intense emotions felt during and after the relationship. I reflect upon the theme of "pain and suffering" as the persona had gone through a series of emotions which led her to be severely hurt emotionally. This makes me feel pity for the persona as she had gone through such emotions that are extremely painful to feel.

    7. Like the colors in autumn, so bright just before they lose it all

The use of simile compares the persona's love with the colors of autumn which highlights how at some points of their relationship, it was bright and warm. However, it is only temporary as those bright and warm colors slowly fade away and "lose it all" similar to how the season of autumn would slowly change to a different season and lose all of its colors.

    8. Loving him is like trying to change your mind once you're already flying through the free fall

The use of simile shows how absolutely impossible it was to love "him" like how it is impossible to change your mind once you are "already flying" and have no control over yourself until you reach the ground. This further emphasises the first two lines of the song and how it was so impossible for them to progress on with their romantic relationship with each other. However, had the persona taken a different approach to their relationship, they may have been able to change their mind before the "free fall' and possibly be able to progress forward with their relationship. This makes me reflect upon the theme of "time" and how you cannot rush things such as "relationships" and "love", but have to take your time to ensure good outcomes.

    9. Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end streetFaster than the wind, passionate as sin, ending so suddenly

The use of simile "driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street" compares the persona's relationship to a luxurious car. This emphasises how the persona's relationship started off extremely "luxurious", full of love and passion. However, they were taking that love nowhere, and having no fun with each other in that relationship, and causing it to "end so suddenly", similar to, "driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street". This makes me reflect upon the theme of "free-will vs fate" as their relationship ending was not determined by fate, but their own free-will as they had the opportunity to control how and what they could go through during their relationship with their "own-free will" and possibly allow it to continue instead of ending so abruptly. I feel annoyed at the persona as she could have done things differently to ensure herself a better outcome, however she failed to do so and ultimately ended up losing her relationship.

    10. Fighting with him was like trying to solve a crossword and realizing there's no right answerRegretting him was like wishing you never found out that love could be that strong

In the second half of the verse, the persona immediately jumps into the negative parts of her relationship. She shows how reminiscing too much about her past can take control of her sad, "red" emotions and break her even more. She instead, chooses to think about the negatives and move forward, symbolising the absolute end of that relationship. However, the use of juxtaposition in those lines shows how she did not regret this relationship, but instead just wished that everything went the "right" way instead of how it went emphasising the true pain that she was actually facing. I reflect upon the theme of unrequited love and how the persona wished things ended differently. I feel sorrowful for her as what she had once thought of him being the "perfect" one is now shattered, and a part of her history now, for her to only be able to reminisce but not change.

    11. (Red, red)Oh, red (Red, red)Burning red (Red, red)(Red, red)

There is another repetition of the word "red" in the second post chorus, which further emphasises her emotions. The word "burning" shows how these "red' emotions were building up within her and could not be released further showing the pain and suffering that she is going through.

    1. None of these will bring disaster.

The absolute word "none" shows how it does not impact the speaker whatsoever, despite losing things that were once important to him.

    2. the hour badly spent.

The diction "badly" highlights how his time was wasted away where he could have been doing something more productive and meaningful with that time.
