    1. But moving on from him is impossibleWhen I still see it all in my head

Again, the persona shows how difficult it is to abandon this relationship that she cherishes, because of all the fond memories that she remembers with her partner, and she remembers each memory so clearly that she still "see it in all in my head". When someone cherishes the memories of someone else, it is definitely almost not possible to completely forget about it and pretend like nothing has happened before. This shows how precious the persona's lover was to her, such that when they broke up, she still feels a sense of reluctance for giving up on him and a sense of great difficulty to attempt to forget about him. I feel a sense of sympathy for the persona as it is understandable to experience a deep struggle to forget a loved one; she constantly tries to forget him to prevent herself from getting more depressed, but it is just not easy to forget him due to how much she has loved him. I can reflect on the theme of love, showing how strong of a negative and painful impact love can leave on someone forever.

    2. Fighting with him was like trying to solve a crosswordAnd realizing there's no right answer

The persona uses a simile, "like trying to solve a crossword and realizing there's no right answer" to show how difficult it is to express her thoughts while in an argument with her lover. Crossword puzzles are normally very vague, for example to name an object that is a certain colour. However, crossword puzzles also has a boundary to which how many letters there must be in your answer. And in the end, when there is no right answer, it makes all that struggle of finding the answer worthless and all time and effort consuming. This shows how an argument between the persona and her lover evokes in her a sense of great confusion, and how she also feels a sense of restriction, because of how she is probably unable to express her thoughts and feelings to her partner clearly, hence their arguments keep on going on without any purpose and understanding of one another. This evokes in me a sense of sympathy for how much suffering and melancholy the persona has to go through fighting with her lover all the time, while she feels unable to comprehend things and unable to explain to one another, which just causes unnecessary hurt towards the persona and her lover, causing their breakup.

    3. Losing him was blue like I'd never known

The speaker compares losing her relationship with her lover with the colour of blue. Blue is commonly symbolised with melancholy, showing how she feels very crestfallen about losing her relationship and she feels a sense of regret for having given up a relationship that she once treasured. The simile "like I'd never known" suggests how this experience of heartbreak has been completely stranger-like to her, how this experience is one that makes her heart-wrenched and scared of facing such a serious heartbreak the first time. I can feel a sense of sympathy for the persona as she has to experience such a depressing stage in life due to losing her relationship.

    4. Faster than the wind

In science, wind particles move at an extreme speed. The persona uses this visual imagery of wind moving at high speed to compare her relationship to show how swift and fast her love story ended, implying how both parties are not suitable for each other and how conflict arises between both of them immediately.

      How fast wind is

    5. And that's why he's spinning 'round in my headComes back to me, burning red

In the end, the persona still cannot forget about her lover, showing simply how much of an importance the persona places him in her heart. Her lover and their relationship will continue to be left reminded in her mind, leaving a permanent scar on her as shown by "Comes back to me, burning red". The rhyme of "head" and "red" also emphasises on the overwhelming negative emotions throughout their relationship which will in turn impact her even in the present after they broke up, showing how this relationship leaves a long-lasting impact on her. This negative memory to her seems like a harsh reminder of how much she has once loved someone but eventually broke up due to conflicts. And since this memory is thought actively throughout in her mind, the persona will only just feel a sense of regret and grief that she has lost her partner. This leads me to reflect on the theme of regret, as we should not do things in the present that would hurt others, especially our loved ones, which would in turn lead us to an irreparable emotional damage for a lifetime as it is not easy to forget about such things easily.

    6. His love was like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street

Once again, the persona includes this parallelism to the first line of the song, 'Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street." However, this time the first two words of the song are different, allowing us to effectively compare the differences between the two lines. After going through so many complicating emotions such as frustration, fear and sadness, this repeated line shows how the persona sees their love as one that would end eventually; it will reach a point of death, showing that as much as both parties love each other, they will have to face the eventual conflict between them which they will not be able to overcome. This line also shows how the persona's lover also seems to experiences the same way as the persona; frustration and sadness and longing for each other, though it is not possible to get back with one another due to how much both parties have hurt each other during their conflicts. I feel a sense of sadness for the persona as she loves her partner so much, but all of the conflicts they have had restricts them from doing so as it acts like a permanent scar that has injured their relationship and it can never be wounded, hence leading to both of them losing one another. I can reflect on the theme of loss, as we need to cherish what we love now and treat them with care, otherwise we will be unable to get them back and leave us with a great sense of guilt and regret.

    7. Remembering him comes in flashbacks and echoesTell myself, "It's time now, gotta let go"

The persona seems to be trying to encourage herself to get out of her downtrodden state after breaking up with her lover, in order to boost her own self-esteem and not leave any trails of sadness for remembering her lover that she has lost. However, her encouragements seem to fail as the persona remembers all the memories she has had with her partner, hence she finds it a deep struggle to completely forget about this relationship. The rhyme of "echo" and "go" connects the two words together, placing more emphasis on these words. The persona seems to be using such high intensity of words to highlight that forgetting her partner is ultimately challenging due to how her partner will constantly be echoed in her mind. Whenever she tries to forget about her partner, his memories just seem to come back like an anchor that is stuck on the persona, showing how trapped the persona is from this already broken relationship, suggesting how much she has cared for this relationship which cannot be forgotten so easily. Seeing the persona desperately trying so hard to leave her miserable state but with no effect because of how precious her lover is is saddening for me to watch since I cannot help at all. I can reflect on the theme of self-encouragement, as sometimes when we are extremely grieved and saddened about something, the best source of medicine to cure ourselves would be to simply encourage ourselves to push out of our misery state, even if it is too difficult.

    8. But loving him was red

The persona uses the colour of red to describe her relationship with her lover. The colour of red usually symbolises love that is not accidental and filled with passion and desire, so the persona might be feeling these intense feelings while in love with her partner. On the other hand, red also has a darker connotation of frustration, and also symbolises danger arising. This could be suggesting that although the persona is passionate and well devoted to her lover, there could be a certain tinge of instability in their tumultuous relationship where conflict may arise quickly between each other, leaving both parties in anger, hurt and regret for what they have done to hurt one another. Taylor has once said that "intense emotions are red". This song may have shown her high intensity of words to convey her feelings during some experiences in her relationship, filled with frustration, fear and a strong passion. I can empathise with her emotions during her relationship, as I can understand that it is normal to feel upset and heartbroken during a conflict with her partner that she cares so deeply about. I can reflect on the theme of conflicts, showing how conflict can hurt one another, especially when it is not resolved peacefully.

    9. passionate as sin

The persona uses this phrase to suggest how "loving him" is intense in the wrong level, to the point that it may have felt too dangerous and in the wrong level of passion, such that it crosses one's own personal boundaries of security. The word "sin" could have also been used as a hyperbole to emphasise how heated and passionate this relationship was between the two lovers, suggesting how much the two lovers were in love with each other to the point it got scary and felt like this love should not have happened; it was like a mistake that crossed one's own personal limits, hence disturbing both parties' emotions negatively, causing them to feel uncomfortable with each other and hence, causing a breakup easily. I can understand the persona's emotions as it is usual to feel uncomfortable and scared to lose her own security and losing her own rights on her own personal boundary, which evokes a sense of sympathy in me.

Fire to convey how strong this relationship was.

    10. Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street

The persona uses a simile, "like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street" to compare her relationship with a dead-end road, suggesting that this love relationship is one that makes someone feel carefree and at ease initially, before it reaches a point where there is no escape from this love; one that makes her feel suffocated and trapped. The visual imagery of "driving a new Maserati" gives one an image of driving a car that is so sleek and smooth, with a big luxury to drive as long and as fast as they want comfortably. However, driving it down "a dead-end street" gives one only a limited duration to drive the car, and driving the car fast will result in a sudden crash. This juxtaposition shows how the persona can only live in this love comfortably for only a limited amount of time, before eventually stopping and may crash, showing that this relationship is one that is reckless and only lasts for a short period of time before getting into conflicts. This reflects the theme of love, showing how one should not be reckless and not think of consequences in terms of relationships. One will only be able to love another happily only for a short time, and it will not last forever since there will be eventual conflicts between each other.

    11. In burning redBurning, it was red

The persona again emphasises the redness of her relationship with the repetition of "red" to show her overwhelming and intense emotions of frustration, fear, grief and longing for her partner.

    12. But loving him was redOh, redBurning red

The persona seems to want to emphasise how trapped she feels in this redness of love. This epistrophe (repetition of words at the end of sentences) of "red" highlights how much the persona has been so passionately loving her partner, but conveying how much frustration and fear she has had all this time during her relationship and after breaking up due to all the conflicts they have had and the loss of one's own sense of security by crossing one's personal boundaries. The word "burning" has a high word intensity of showing how strong the "redness" of this relationship was, emphasising the intense desire and pain this relationship contained as she has so much negative emotions during her relationship such as feeling restricted and frustrated, but she also finds leaving her lover unbearable. This makes her almost as if stuck between the devil and the deep sea, whether she wants to continue with this relationship that evokes anger and fear, or she wants to leave her partner which would cause an emotional scarring of sadness and longing of her partner. This makes me feel sad as it is obvious that the persona is trying to break free from this relationship completely, but she cannot seem to forget about her partner because of how much she had loved him.

    13. Memorizing him was as easy as knowing all the wordsTo your old favorite song

The persona shows how significant her lover is in her life, given how she is able to know all about the characteristics of her partner effortlessly. The simile "Memorizing him is as easy as knowing all the words to your old favorite song" suggests how memorable the lover is to the persona, since one's old favourite song usually has a catchy music and tune played repeatedly, making the song much more memorable. Since it is also a favourite song, the words of the song would also be very easy to remember, since it would be etched in one's mind easily without even trying. This shows the level of importance that the lover is towards the persona, since she can memorise her lover's characteristics without putting much effort. However, it must be melancholic for her to lose her lover due to a breakup, due to the level of importance the persona places him in her heart, and losing this relationship would be like losing an extremely precious and valued item from her, conveying her deep sense of regret and grief for losing her lover.

    14. Regretting him was like wishing you never found outThat love could be that strong

The persona uses a simile "like wishing you never found out that love could be that strong" to convey the intensity of her regret of breaking up with her partner. When you wish you have never found out about something, you would feel less affected since you wouldn't experience and understand how much impact it causes to yourself. Hence, now that the persona knew how much of a strong and negative impact love can cause, it shows her extreme deep sense of regret and guilt for what she has done in the past during her relationship; quarrelling with her partner, doing things uncomfortable for one another etc., and she wishes to turn back time and make changes to maintain her relationship, but it is obviously no longer possible. This evokes a sense of sadness in me, as the persona is unable to reverse back time to make changes for her relationship, and the fact that listeners like I can only watch her deep sense of regret and sorrowness makes me feel crestfallen. I can reflect on the theme of losing others, since this cannot be changed or reversed, hence we must learn to treat our loved ones with care and understanding to avoid conflicts arising which negatively impacts our relationships.

    15. Touching him was like realizing all you ever wantedWas right there in front of you

The persona forms a tactile imagery of how touching her lover "was like realizing all you ever wanted was right there in front of you", creating an image of how the persona's lover seemed to be like achieving her dream and getting her ideal partner, conveying how much the persona loves her lover. The simile shows that the persona saw her lover as all she ever desired, which shows how passionate she was towards her relationship. This makes me feel a sense of pity for the persona, by showing how much the persona loved her lover, almost like a dream she has accomplished, but had to lose him due to conflicts between each other resulting in a breakup.

    16. Forgetting him was like tryin' know somebody you never met

The persona uses a simile, "like tryin' to know somebody you never met" to suggest how trying to forget her lover was difficult and requires effort. Trying to get to know somebody you have never seen before would require one to slowly know all about the person, his/her personality traits and characteristics, which takes a lot of time and effort. However, as challenging as it is to learn about someone's characteristics, it is also equally as difficult to forget about his/her traits, due to how much time, effort and memories have been spent to learn about those traits. This suggests how the persona cannot bear to leave her lover and she struggles to abandon this relationship, conveying how precious this relationship was to her and how much she refused to leave her partner, but she had no choice for how much conflict had arose between both of them. This evokes a sense of sympathy in me for her loss of her partner and how much sadness she has to go through.

How sad one can feel after someone left him

    17. Missing him was dark gray, all alone

The persona suggests that losing her lover evokes a sense of anxiety and insecurity in her, and it also makes her feel isolated without her lover's accompany. The persona compares her yearning for her partner to be dark gray. The colour of dark gray symbolises solemness, gloominess and insecurity. This suggests that the persona seems to feel depressed by losing her partner, and how her partner seems to bring a sense of security and accompany towards the persona to prevent the persona from feeling isolated. This suggests how important the persona's lover is to her heart, and how the persona cherishes this relationship with her lover. I can imagine the immeasurable suffering that the persona has to bear with for losing her soulmate, which brings me to reflect on the theme of loss, showing how losing a cherished being can bring about so much pain and depression within one's life.

    18. Like the colors in autumn, so bright, just before they lose it all

The persona uses a simile to compare her love to the colours in autumn, which are orange and yellow. These colours are usually very aesthetic and pleasing to the eye, showing how the persona was once so attracted to her lover. However, autumn also connotes a darker meaning of death, as it is a season of which leaves fall and die. This suggests that although the persona was so deeply attracted to her lover, there is an impending sense of doom for their love.

      Tree leaves on the ground

    19. like trying to change your mindOnce you're already flying through the free fall

The persona uses this simile to suggest how her love is difficult to be reversed, as shown by “trying to change your mind once you’re already flying through the free fall”. One cannot easily go back to his/her original position while falling down, hence showing how the persona was too impulsive in terms of her relationship since she has never made a firm decision before beginning a relationship with another person. Now that she has entered a relationship, it is difficult for the persona to completely forget about her partner, and it will cause a permanent impact on the persona. This reflects the theme of relationships, showing how one should not be too impulsive and reckless when getting into relationships, and one should consider whether his/her partner is committed towards him/her first, otherwise it will be irreversible to abandon a relationship and one will feel a sense of regret and guilt.

      Think twice before doing something
