    1. And, research indicates that giftedness occurs along a continuum. As a teacher, you will likely encounter students who are moderately gifted, highly gifted and, perhaps if you’re lucky, even a few who are profoundly gifted.

I believe every student and every person has an area of intelligence and understanding that they excel in if catered to. People who are brilliant and have amazing processing and decoding skills can fail in a school environment. Everyone has a skill or set of knowledge that triumphs ours, as a teacher it's important to foster respect and appreciate when a student introduces us to something new.

    1. In five states—Arizona, Arkansas, Montana, New Mexico, and Ohio—as many as one in seven children had experienced three or more ACEs

I wonder for children who do experience 3 or more ACES if they're enduring the same event multiple times or different events. I also wonder if there is a correlation to socioeconomics for locations where trauma occurs more often. I also wonder where West Virginia lies on the scale.

    1. The challenge inherent in this recommendation is that the U.S. Supreme Court has already made clear that there is no federal right to a public education.

Why is this? Has there ever been an attempt to make public education a federal right? What steps need to be taken to provide more federal resources & policies for US schools. Of all things to spend money on, the education system should be high on the list of priorities.

    1. One of Kim’s pet peeves about how teachers interact with English language learners is the way they often see students’ efforts as ‘cute,’ missing the whole point of what the student is trying to say. “A student will be desperate to communicate, and the teacher will get distracted by the delivery and miss the message,” she says.

When anyone's efforts to learn something new are deemed "cute", it's extremely condescending and creates a power imbalance. Nobody's genuine efforts to communicate should be met with shame or embarrassment. Calling another person's efforts cute places them below you and destroys room for equal grounds. Message delivery is not equal to a lack of understanding or lack of knowledge on the student's behalf. Student engagement requires listening with intent, not just passing on the gold-star-sticker to avoid conversations that require more time to understand.

    1. In my experience, his level of defensiveness is not unusual when discussing privilege.

It's always those who benefit most from the system that defend it or refuse to acknowledge the pain of others. It is exhausting trying to beat empathy into a brick wall. For the most part, the defensive only get more defensive and combative while those who attempt to explain their privilege to them are labeled as overreactive, sensitive, and then ultimately dismissed.

    2. Social workers are gatekeepers to resources that an individual needs  - and are often unable to access without assistance.

The roles of social workers are so critically important, so much weighs on their shoulders. There are huge opportunities to make mistakes, and if one is made, the repercussions can leave a needy person without relief. To be a social worker requires a magnitude of strength, diligence, and excruciating attention to detail.
